s/o goodie bags

Am I the only person that thinks gift cards in goodie bags are ridiculous? (I also think they are an "only in the nest world" item).

I've never seen one in a goodie bag and really hope I never do. Don't give me a gc to XYZ because it's

a) just another thing that you've added to my must-do list (or else add deal with tantrum to my list)

b) my kid will not truly "get" it nor will he really think it's that great

c) it's likely going to cost me money because the $5 or $10 card is not likely to actually cover in full the amount of the trip

d) in my opinion assigning a price tag to the items in your goody bag is a bit rude. Might as well have hung a sign that says "i paid $400 for this party" up at the entrance to the place.

Flame me all you want. But I can't be the only person that laughs everytime this is suggested, can I?

Re: s/o goodie bags

  • We haven't gotten any (thankfully) and i would never give them. My kids wouldn't know what to do with it. Maybe for older kids it's good b/c the can get whatever they want but not the younger ones.

**the new version of the nest ate my pictures and I can't get them back again***
  • I agree with you. If Brandon got a gift card, he would be a million times less thrilled than if he got a 30 cent bouncy ball and 10 cent piece of gum.  It's just not a tangible item for him to understand, "oh shyte awesome, I can now go get xyz from target"

I also get annoyed when I have gift cards in my wallet that are less than like 20 bucks!  Yes, it's still as good as cash there, but I forget to use it, and then it sits there.

  • I have done it and gotten them and my DD loves it! She loves going to the store and picking out an item. I make sure she stays within range, I may dish out a dollar or two to cover. I actually heard and got them way before this Nest. I personally think the GC is better than the crap plastic toys that are thrown in there for the hell of it...they are a true waste of $$ IMO because they go right in the trash.

I won't flame you, will just make sure you are never invited to a party at our house ;)

  • I agree with you.  $5 gc isn't going to cover much.  I don't get the need to go crazy over a goody bag.  Abby doesn't care if you spend $10 for $1 on it.  I just hate when there is bag of crappy really sugary candy.  I usually just throw that stuff out.

  • i have yet to get one.

would i give one. POSSIBLY to an ice cream store like suggested but it really doesn't work for us. and with kids and allergies. our friend used to think their kid had a dairy allergy so that would have been torture.

im also CHEAP. i spend WAY less on my goodie bags than typical nesties.

last year i was able to do the  banks and bubbles in bags for like 3 bucks!

I agree. May as well just stick $5 bills in the goodie bag because my kid would understand that equally as much.

this made me LOL. belle prefers change because  she likes the sound it makes dopping it in her piggy bank.

deb where did you get the capes from?

  • we haven't gotten them and i'm happy about it too for about all the same reasons. the $ tag thing doesn't occur to me ever - you never know what someone really paid for anything - a friend gives out printed tees, but it's a family business so it's at cost, but would cost me more if i wanted to do that - know what i mean?

it comes up *everytime* goodie bags are discussed. Where have you been woman? Today I saw the title (and I'm bored at work) and predicted "three posts until gcs are suggested". lol

  • I really don't care what people give.  Whether my son got a bag of crap that goes in the garbage or a $5 gc... does it really matter?   When I get invited to party, all I know is that it's my job to bring a gift, thats it... whether we come home with something or not, really doesn't matter to me.  We went to a party this wknd and we got a bag of crap... I picked out the snickers bars and the twix & my son kept a little dinosaur and everything else went in the garbage.  Had we gotten a gc to b&n or dd... we would've gotten him a treat one day... But it reallly realllly doesn't matter to me.  And I know my son is 2, but when he's a little older I will make sure he knows that when he's invited to a party he needs to GIVE... whatever he gets is just an added bonus.  I don't get kids that get pissed off at the goody bags either... WTF?!  It aint your birthday!!!!
  • where I live is way old school and so is my irl circle of friends. Sometimes there isnt even a goody bag. I mean the kids gets pizza, cake and 2 hours of entertainment AND a goodie bag :-) Sometimes it just so thing full of random stuff from Bounce U etc. Usually its a candy, stickers, ball etc. I dont spend more than a few dollars a piece. ESPECIALLY now when I dont even know alot of the kids anymore LOL. I am sure I did more when they were younger when the noveltey of the party thing was new but now, I go to what is the easiest to plana nd execute that wont cost and arm and a leg :-)

  • I've never done it, and I've never received it, but now at age 6 I wouldn't think twice about my kid getting one. Actually, he LOVES getting gift cards and when people asked me what to get him for his birthday this year (since it's right after Christmas), I told them to get him a B&N gift card, or a TRU gift card, even if it's $5 or $10, he just loves gift cards.

At 2 or 3 I wouldn't be nuts about him getting one, mainly because he didn't know what they were, but let's be real - you can come up with the world's best goodie bag items for your kid's party and within 24 hours 90% of the kids are going to forget that they got one, and probably half of that will forget they were even at a party the day before.

TOTALLY agree. now granted im the one that asked. but was looking for ideas. but seriously the amount of money people drop on goodie bags. i like to do it for the kids because i know at this age the kids get excited (belle FLIPS for goodie bags)  i also think its a nice gesture to the guests. but seriously i ain't droppin 10 bucks per kid. after i gave you pizza, snacks, entertainment for an hour  or two AND cake.

in a way i am looking forward to the sleepover birthday party stage (in a way in another way) not so much

  • I just went back now and read all of the other responses. How ungrateful. Seriously. It's meant as a nice gesture and probably took as much time to come up with as every other completely generic party idea anyone else has.

    i don't open that sh!t anymore.  i just don't care.

i am in the mood to be amused, though.  i might just have to pop in on that one.  and then run to the bathroom to avoid peeing my pants with laughter.

  • Goodie bags come from the dollar area of Target for us.  LIttle note pad, pen, lolly pop and whatever else and send them on their way.  Abby had a Justin Beiber party (really just the invites were the beibs) And I ended up finding little Beiber note pads at target.  She had more boys then girls at her party and they were all just as thrilled.  Hate to say that most of the goodie bags we get go in the trash. They either forget about them or play with the stuff and it breaks.  Never got a gift card though.......

  • ps: if you want to BLOW PEOPLE'S MINDS with a goody bag insert, give them Chuck E Cheese GCs.  you'll make a lot of enemies but it'll be totally worth it.

Don't get me wrong. We are doing goodie bags this weekend. They are filled with "crap" but crap that 4 year olds like: slinky, glider, stickers. No candy though. Spent a few dollars each. Would have been less if I didn't go for the gliders but I know M will like it.

i did them for grace's party (for her school friends.  my family got the shaft).  i had a "make your own cookie party" and they kept the apron they made, the rolling pin they used, the cookie cutters they used and decorated the box for the cookie and brought that home.  done.

M just discovered we have a CEC near us. But we told him that only grandparents can take them there. So far he is buying it.

I've never seen nor heard of gc's in a goody bag. Unfortunately for me, I usually grab the bag, never look in it, and throw it out before E even sees it. Because B doesn't want chatchkes and junk in the house and he's not having candy, so I'd miss the gc completely.

  • TSDTSD member
I get gift items for wholesale so that's what goes in the goodie bag. This year it's harmonicas, wooden yo-yos, and wooden tops. I think it's costing $4 per bag. That's as expensive as I go.
  • The last 2 parties we went to we got a gc for yogurt land. I actually prefer this than a goody bag filled w candy and 30cent toys from party city that I can't wait to throw out. my daughter gets it and is excited. I don't mind making the trip. It'll actually cover yogurt for both my girls and probably a little bit for next time. I, however have never done a gc
  • I've never even heard of getting a GC as a goodie bag nor have I ever considered giving one. I always thought the kids prefer a bag full of crap over a card anyway. Regardless of my waste of money on the crap. The kids enjoyed it for 5 minutes and I'm done. My kids would be happier with $1 bill than a GC. I say do whatever you want. The kids at our parties get pre-assembled boxes from Celebrate Express. It's so easy I don't think I'll do anything else again! I used to do the personalized cups and what not, now I just don't care!

Wait. So you give out goodie bags, but when you get them at parties, you throw it out before your kid even gets to see it? Lol. That's funny.

Liz - re: your OP - I totally agree that GC's are just weird for little kids. My kid actually likes the little random toys that come in those bags... yes, I usually end up throwing the stuff out within a few days, but he likes going through it, like it's some sort of treasure.

I sort of do the same thing... when Griffin gets a gift bag he usually looks inside and picks out the thing he likes the best - plays with/eats that... then later I empty the bag out - putting any candy into our candy jar, and any really crappy plastic stuff into the garbage... it's not worth the mess it's going to make in my house, or the choking hazard with the twins, to keep that kind of stuff around.

I do goodie bags and try to do just a couple things... mostly stuff that is consumable - stickers, fruit snacks, etc.... or something that is more expensive and larger - and not just a ton of crap.
