School Uniform - Yay or Nay?

The place we are considering for K is moving to a uniform next year. I'm conflicted. Wanted to hear others thoughts.

Thanks!

Re: School Uniform - Yay or Nay?

  • F*CK YES!

    a) they're completely adorable.

    b) they are AMAZINGLY EASY.  think about it: you won't have to fight with EITHER of your kids (i'm thinking more D once she goes there, assuming they go to the same school).  you ALREADY know RIGHT NOW what she'll be wearing EVERY DAY.

i LOVED wearing a uniform (but admittedly, i'm quirky like that).  i know my mom loved it even more.

proof that i make babies. jack, grace, and ben, in no particular order

  • i don't think i really care either way actually. there are ups and downs to it.
  • I'd be super excited that there would never have to be a debate or thought on what I'd need to dress my kid in every morning.  I don't really buy the "saving money" aspect because they still need clothes after school and on weekends and I know it wouldn't curtail what I bought.  I like it for simplicity's sake in the morning.
  • i wore a uniform k through high school...and as ugly as they were, it made a lot of things really easy...there is no clothing fight in morning...no worrying about who has the best of the best, etc...i would be cool with it...

  • I wore a uniform in high school and while it was so not stylish I loved it. I was one of the poorer kids (I qualified for free lunch programs and my friend had a freaking indoor tennis court at her estate) so I was glad to not have to "compete" in that arena. It also made mornings so much easier.

But I think it's a lie that it's cheaper cause my parents still had to buy clothes for me to change into.

  • I think as they got older I would LOVE it. Its a little more challenging for a 12 year old to be "sexy" in khaki pants and a button down shirt. I see these little girls walking around town when its 20 degrees and they have on short shorts, ugg boots and a hoodie and I want to vomit. Uniforms would be good for them and for the younger crowd it would eliminate the fighting about what to wear.
  • The public schools in my town have a uniform policy and it has been wonderful! Saved tons of money on clothing and no fights about what to wear in the mornings!!! I see it as a win-win!!
  • Cameron wears a uniform. It is so much easier and she likes it too. I think she looks super cute in them and she likes that she is just like the big girls. It may sound silly but she feels very much a part of something.
  • id be ok with it. theres still plenty of room for individuality, and it removes the battle of getting dressed in the morning.

  • Hell YES! I love love love not having to argue with Reilly. Monday she wears her gym uniform, Tuesday - Friday her jumper and turtle neck. In Sept and June they ahve a khaki skoirt and white polo shirt. They get a few dress down days and she can show her individuality between the hours of 4-8 pm and all weekend long LOL!

They dont really enforce all the detail of the dress code in K at our school either, Reilly doesnt always wear her oxfords, sometimes she wears ballet flats, she has worn nail polish to school without issue etc.

  • Yay!

I went to public school and I would never have wanted to wear a uniform but now as a mom I'd love it for my kids.

  • I'm in the minority here, but I refused to go to private school b/c I didn't want to wear a uniform.  My kids - both of them - love to pick out their own clothes so uniforms would not make my life easier.  yup my two boys are picky dressers.
Where in world would you like me to ship you? image My boys - I am so screwed in about 7 years. What's the difference between a hockey mom and a pitbull? LIPSTICK !
  • I read a comment recently in regards to this topic where a mother said it would not be fair for the town to adapt a uniform policy now since her child was in high school and would hate it. I am still trying to understand that logic.
  • It wouldn't deter me from enrolling him in a certain school but it would bum me out. My Public High School, as well as a # of other towns in the area now have a Uniform. I can't imagine. I think if I had a girl I'd be a little more down on it. I just don't like the idea of girls ALWAYS having to wear a skirt.

Hell yes. Wish they'd do that here. No spoiled brat issues with clothes- who has better this or that, no kid getting picked on for not having the nicest stuff. LOVE.

They don't always have to wear a skirt. At least not in all uniform programs. That I would have a problem with. But a choice- pants or the skirt- fine. My friend's daugher has blue sweatpants and a yellow polo shirt.

  • I'm on the fence. I wore a uniform for 1st grade, and while it didn't upset me in the slightest, my poor mom had to wash and iron it every night after working all day. I guess as long as you have multiple changes of wrinkle-free uniform clothes, it would be welcome, though.
  • ours is wash and wear. We have three sets of each uniform, the winter and summer with tights, socks etc. I am OK with being able to wash etc with the three sets. $$ saving isnt that great. I got alot of our stuff from a friend BUT when I went to buy the three jumper sets, the three skoirt sets, tights, socks, headbands etc and 1 sweat suit for gym and it was like $700 and thats basically 6 outfits, you still need weekend clothes, dress clothes, socks etc so I can see it being any cheaper, if anything its more!
  • Ohhhhh I forgot about ironing.  I already have an ironing pile through the damn roof.  My daughter will be attending a private school from pre-K on and wearing uniforms that I believe need ironing.
  • I'm not a fan personally. Uniform clothes aren't cheap and then you have to buy uniforms and regular clothes, so twice the expense. I personally look awkward, uncomfortable, and just awful in a collared shirt (big boobs but slender waist, so a lot of shirts just don't fit me right), so that colors my opinion a lot since I've never seen a uniform that didn't include that.

I am, however, a huge fan of a strict dress code. My town growing up didn't allow shorts/skirts more than two inches above the knee, no tank tops, halter tops or tube tops (sleeveless was okay in middle school, high school even sleeveless was forbidden), on bare midriffs. I liked that it helped teach us how to choose clothes that were appropriate instead of dictating to us.

Also, the private school uniform rules in the area I grew up in weren't enforced nearly as well as our  school enforced dress code, so the private school girls all dress up the sexual fantasy thing worse than the public. They all get their skirts shortened to a truly indecent length then claim "growth spurt, can't afford a new one." (a few of my friends went from the catholic middle school to our public high school and said they used that all the time).

  • YES YES YES.

    i would LOVE uniforms!

My old school i was a teacher at in NOLA had them - public schools all did (but one) in NOLA at the time. Simple - navy pants/skirst/shorts + white tops. LOVED THEM.

The kids all looked similar- no "rich vs. poor" issues, etc.  They were ready to learn... in their uniform- much like i feel ready to work in my suit.

    so easy for parents....

and great on field trips- so easy to see if one of yours strays from the pack, etc :)

I'm a HUGE fan of them.

I used to be Goldie_locks_5 but the new nest is so screwed up that I was forced to start over.

  • I can see how it would be a great idea.  Sara goes to a school that has a dress code and Ben will go there next year.  Unfortunately one of his rules (not so much in K, but from 1st on) is that he has to wear a shirt with a collar.  currently, I get most of his clothes - very nice hand-me-downs- from my sister - and there arent so many shirts with collars in there.  so its going to cost me $.

  • I would have more of a problem getting Paige dressed everyday if she had to wear a uniform.  Unless there was a pants option then not but this girl does not like to wear skirts or dresses everyday.

Oh Hell No, lol. $700 is a lot of $!!!!!! And I totally forgot about the ironing. I don't do the iron.

  • I'm not sure uniforms really "even" the playing field of which kids have or can afford pricier clothes or not.  At at age where is starts to matter (not so much k, but older kids), won't the "haves" focus on their accessories?  Pricier jewelry (if allowed per dress code), fancier purses or bags?

I'm not a fan of uniforms, (dress code, yes), but i don't think that uniforms help much in this respect long term.

  • I LOVE the school uniform.  It is so awesome - absolutely no arguments about clothing and no discussions about who is wearing what.  Everyone is on the same playing field.

It's expensive, but they wash and wear really well so it will last the entire year.
