It wouldn't deter me from enrolling him in a certain school but it would bum me out. My Public High School, as well as a # of other towns in the area now have a Uniform. I can't imagine. I think if I had a girl I'd be a little more down on it. I just don't like the idea of girls ALWAYS having to wear a skirt.

Our public school requires tan, black or navy bottoms...skirt or pants. My daughter's teacher actually encourages they wear pants since they have gym twice a week and play outside if the weather permits.

I'm not a fan personally. Uniform clothes aren't cheap and then you have to buy uniforms and regular clothes, so twice the expense. I personally look awkward, uncomfortable, and just awful in a collared shirt (big boobs but slender waist, so a lot of shirts just don't fit me right), so that colors my opinion a lot since I've never seen a uniform that didn't include that.

I am, however, a huge fan of a strict dress code. My town growing up didn't allow shorts/skirts more than two inches above the knee, no tank tops, halter tops or tube tops (sleeveless was okay in middle school, high school even sleeveless was forbidden), on bare midriffs. I liked that it helped teach us how to choose clothes that were appropriate instead of dictating to us.

Also, the private school uniform rules in the area I grew up in weren't enforced nearly as well as our  school enforced dress code, so the private school girls all dress up the sexual fantasy thing worse than the public. They all get their skirts shortened to a truly indecent length then claim "growth spurt, can't afford a new one." (a few of my friends went from the catholic middle school to our public high school and said they used that all the time).

KIERAN'S uniform is far from expensive, we are able to get our pants at target, or old navy- khaki, the girls can get their items there too- and our shirts were only $10 a piece with the logo. Everything was very reasonable-

I worked in Jersey city and they had to wear khaki bottoms and their uniform shirts- which were polos. We got them at walmart for the girls.

I wore one till 12th grade, and while I hated it, I loved it too! I see no issues with uniforms.

  • I don't have a strong opinion either way. I do think that it's much easier on me if my kids wore a uniform.......

  • Where are you ladies shopping for these expensive uniform items?? I got DD six polo shirts, two cardigans, five khaki pants and two skirts for about $150.  All the major retailers have insane sales during back to school season.

I think the uniforms of today are different than the uniforms of some of our times. And I'm sure they run in all price ranges. So I'm for uniforms that are wash and wear and inexpensive. Not for $700 uniforms. But, I think for public school, I'd have to assume they are on the less expensive side.
  • We have to order from Flynn and O'Hara, you know the Irish Uniform maker to all the Catholic schools LOL what a racket! The jumper alone is $40.

To be clear there is no ironing on these.

  • I would love our public schools to wear a uniform. I wore one for 13 years and never had to worry about what to wear. I am dreading going back to school shopping with 3 girls.

But you're still buying more clothes than you otherwise would. Or does he just stay in his school uniform for the afternoon and evening and only have 2-3 sets of clothes for weekend use? Julia's school clothes are her play clothes, so she goes through one outfit a day instead of two (I always assumed kids who wore uniforms took them off as soon as they got home to avoid stains and getting them dirty).

most of the public schools that have a uniform policy don't require skirts. They khaki pants and polo shirts for everyone.

  • YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYY

I love my life with kids who wear uniforms. So flipping easy!!!!  Plus I have 2 fashionistas so not having an argument every morning makes me life a breeze!  I swear I won't put them in public school for that reason alone lol!

I think there is confusion between uniforms for catholic schools and a uniform dress code in public schools. For the most part, public school uniform is generic....khakis of a certain color, polos, cardigan sweater. DD's school requires blk, navy or tan bottoms. It could be sweatpants, khakis, dress pants....just no jeans. Since it is cold out, I send DD in fleece or velour pants and a long sleeve polo. She will stay in that all day, somedays she asks to change into a tee. She has weekend clothing but nothing compared to what I have had to buy in the past.

Cameron wears a uniform. It is so much easier and she likes it too. I think she looks super cute in them and she likes that she is just like the big girls. It may sound silly but she feels very much a part of something.

OH MY GOD i have not seen a pic of your "bab" in literally years! She is all grown up!!!

No thanks, I don't need child porn or Tweets from this site---thanks for the memories nesties---RIP, Franco---2004--2012.
  • Love school uniforms.  We have the Flynn & O'Hara plaid uniforms.  No ironing needed.  They do offer pants for girls though I think the jumpers or skirts look much better.  My kids' school has a yearly uniform sale where you can guy used uniforms very cheap ($1-5 per piece).  Works for me!

  • Big YAY.  I am already overwhelmed by the daily fights with my daughter about what she will and won't wear to school.  She comes home every day telling me what others have on.  She walks in the classroom and the first comment from any female classmate is related to wardrobe.  SHE IS IN PRE-K.  Also, I'm totally appalled by the way young girls are dressing, and the clothes companies are selling (e.g., the half naked 12 year olds on the windows of the Victoria's Secret "Pink" stores especially make me sick to my stomach).  I think school should be about school, not focusing on all the materialistic crap (who has which brand of clothing, whose jeans are tighter and lower, etc.).  Sure, you can't completely escape it, but I'm all for minimizing that nonsense!  I remember, especially as a teenager, wishing I had to wear a uniform as my parents couldn't afford every brand name fad.  So, yes, I'm all for uniforms! :)

Yes, I definitely have never heard of public school uniforms so I wasn't aware they were just colors and you can get them all over. That said, I would be bored of putting my kid in the same thing (and same colors... blah!) by the end of the first week of school lol. I'm also surprised to hear that jeans aren't okay but fleece or velour pants are. I consider those too casual for school and don't allow them, but jeans are fine with me.

  • As a parent who just moved her child from public to Catholic school, I can tell you it is SO WONDERFUL to have uniforms.

My daughter (in K mind you) was teased for a dress she wore. She cried and was devastated as this was her favorite dress. To already see clothing issues in K floored me. I can only imagine the drama in middle school.

Now, she is the same as everyone else. I never worry about what she is wearing and mornings are so easy.

  • I wore a uniform from 1st grade through senior year of high school, and I didn't mind it at all. I also did have nearly as many non uniform outfits as my friends. When you're only wearing something a few hours a week you can get away with more wears than if you wear it all the time. For example, I only had 2 pairs of jeans in high school. My friends sister who didn't wear a uniform had like 10 pairs.
  • i can't quite articulate why, but i just don't like it. i have to think about it more, but my gut right now is saying, "nay".

  • Yay!

It is really cheaper even when you have other clothes for afterschool/weekends.  I find this applies more with my daughter than it did with my son.

No worrying about what to wear today.  Back to school shopping is a breeze!
