Ranger is the newest member of the household, and we adopted him a few days before Thanksgiving. I saw Ranger's picture on Facebook, and it said he was about to be PTS because of "behavioral issues" (meaning he didn't come to the front of the cage when someone walked by, so they assumed he might try to snap). They never even officially put him up for adoption. So I had to fight, but finally they re-evaluated him the day he was scheduled to be PTS, and I was able to adopt him!

This is awesome!  I'm sure he loves you for it too.

Our tuxedo manx (now an angel) came into our lives this way... they took all the cats that didn't get adopted out for that month back to be euthanized at the main office, but forgot one.  We had seen him the day before and fell in love with him when he reached through the cage and grabbed DH's arm and wouldn't let go.  His name was Hercules and he was a big boy.  DH (then BF) hadn't planned on getting a kitty.  He thought about him all night and finally decided to go back and rescue him.  When we got there we found out he had been taken away (and why) and were devastated.  Just then we saw a paw in the corner and one of the other techs had put him in a dog cage in the corner until they came to pick him up.  We took him right away!  He was as loyal as a dog and the best boy ever.  We had him for 10 years until cancer took him away.... but that's 10 more years he was going to have if fate hadn't intervened Wink

  • I guess I'll play, even if I am a little late to the party.

I'm Meredith, I work as a community organizer for a local LGBT nonprofit organization and manage our community outreach programs. I am currently applying to graduate schools and hopefully will be starting a social work program this coming fall. My wife Shannon is halfway through a PhD program in gender studies. We've been married for just over 3 years and don't have any human children yet.

We adopted our sweet rescue doggie Francesca Elisabetta (we call her Chessie) at the end of November, 2011.

You can check out the pictures HERE if you're interested.

We are loving being first-time puppy parents! Our little girl is such a huge joy to us. We adopted her from a local high-kill shelter and could not be happier with our decision. We'd always wanted a very specific kind of dog (Pomeranian) but our first trip to the shelter our little Chihuahua mix girl caught our eye and we're happy we backed off from the image we had in our head because she is the perfect addition to our family. We call Chessie our "puppy daughter" and joke about how she has both her mommies' best qualities. Stick out tongue

Chessie makes us so proud every day. She's a huge lapdog and loooooves to snuggle her mommies. She loves to make human friends and wants to give kissies to every person we pass on the street. She's been slower to warm up to other dogs, but after her first training class last night she's shown a lot of interest in playing with other dogs and today she had a looooong play session with a mini Aussie Shepherd who comes to work with my coworker. It was so cute to see her personality with other dogs come out! I'm excited to keep discovering new parts of her personality. We are lucky she rescued us!!

I'm sure I'll be around with plenty of questions as a new pet owner - thanks to those of you who have helped with the first couple!

  • Super late, but I'll play too.

I'm Kristin, I am a School Age Coordinator for the YMCA in Fargo, ND. I am married, own my house, and have 2 dogs.

Shadow is our 15 year old Poodle mix. My husband had had him since he was a puppy. Shadow has one eye, (lost the other to glaucoma), and is basically blind in the other. He spends his days bossing my other dog around, sleeping on our bed, and cuddling his favorite toy chipmunk. He has had this toy for 4 years, and just loves it.

Archer is my other dog. My husband and I adopted him in June, and they said he's about 1. Archer is a Papillion mix. What he's mixed with is anyone's guess. We have been told Chihuahua, Sheltie, American Eskimo, and Australian Cattle Dog. He is a wonderful dog who is very smart. He love his obedience classes, and I think will be awesome at agility. He love my husband, but loves me even more. He will sit on the top step when he hears the garage door open to wait for me to come inside.

  • I'm late and like schneider, was a regular but am now in and out depending.  I'm a prosecutor in VA, we got married May 2010, been together 8 years.

Three cats:  Sam, Boo, Hunter.  Sam was a stray someone else found and fostered, Hunter was a feral we trapped and socialized, and Boo was at the shelter where I volunteered for a year before DH adopted her for me as a V Day present.  Darwin is our beagle bassett and he is a foster failure.

I lose count, but we've had maybe 24 fosters so far, most recent was a foster for ST's rescue who Linzem pulled for us from a puppy mill type situation.  We foster a lot of FIV kitties and feral kittens, with some hounds thrown in.

  • I am 27, a teacher and live in Maryland.  I am also having a baby in April! DH and I are very excited.

We have 5 cats (who are staying, obvi), and also foster kittens for a local animal shelter.  We occasionally foster cats/kittens people find, which is sort of how we ended up with 5.

Loki - aka Lou Lou - 2.5 year old gray & white DSH.  She is super smart and is currently learning how to sit on command.  She has asthma.  She was in the foster program at the shelter, which is part of how we got into it.

Bartleby- aka Big Boy - 2.5 year old orange and white medium hair cat.  He is very handsome and was a certified therapy cat for a while, except he never came out of his carrier, so he (we) quit.  He likes to snuggle my pregnancy pillow and my belly.  He is into boy stuff.

Serendipity - aka Muse or Cranky Pants - 2.5 year old black/gray tabby.  She is Garfield through and through.  She sleeps constantly and loves carbs.  Recently she has been obsessed with snuggling my belly.

Jay & Silent Bob - aka Jay Jay and Bob - 1.5 year old orange tabby (J) and brown tabby (B).  We took them in when their owner "had to move and couldn't keep them."  They stayed with us for 8 weeks until room opened up at the shelter.  They took a while to warm up to us, but did not do well at the shelter, so we took them back and decided to keep them.  They are quite talkative (especially SB) and J loves to snuggle with his mommy.  They enjoy having boy stuff meetings with Bartleby.

S and SB look a lot alike and when we first introduced them, it made the others do double takes.  It was hilarious.

edited because I can't spell my own cats' names.

  • Might as well in hopes to get responses to my question.

28- I hold multiple jobs- office manager, project manager, bookkeeper

    Widowed

2 dogs- Ringo: American bulldog/boxer mix. He came from Ace of Hearts Rescue in LA, they are a terrible organization and dealing with them after we got him, was horrible. A month after adopting him (maybe not even that) he couldn't stand, and he was diagnosed with HD, he then had a FHO- followed by lots of rehab, has had 2 root canals and 3 teeth pulled- all 4 of his canine teeth are broken and he has no teeth in front. Most recently he had a knee surgery- which required more rehab. He loves the vet, the vets love him, my bank account hates both. Good thing he's cute. He's an abusive pup.

Kobe: English bulldog mix- about double the size of the average English bulldog- He has had multiple entroprian surgeries, and a MRI, and FHO, followed by lots of rehab and a year long infection on his stomach, that still comes up with three or four sores, but is mostly gone I guess. He doesn't like the vet as much, hates to be held down due to his previous family. As long as they don't try to take his temp and don't try to hold him down, he loves their attention. He does well with treats. He is a lot more picky,

Allie- Super old cat who stays under the bed and really really really hates Kobe.

  • My screenname is my name... taboo I know but it is what it is and I'm not changing it this late in the game. I've been MIA lately due to craziness at work, but it's simmering down now thankfully!  I've been in HR for 13 yrs so if you ever have an HR question, feel free to ask!  I've lived in Tampa for 8 years this month, transplanted from various places up north.  I have 2 beautiful sons who test my patience daily, but I'll keep them anyway - LOL. Pets (in my siggy):

2 kitties - Ruthie, my tortie, will be 7 in March and Minny, my tiger, will be 14 in July.  The third kitty in my sig, Stewie, we lost in October 2010 unexpectedly at only 3 1/2.

1 resident dog - Ace, my one-eyed peke, will be 8 in August (based on the age the shelter gave us when we adopted him in Sept 2010).

1 foster dog (not in sig so here's a pic) - Drew, a catahoula mix we've had for 2 weeks who might be around a year old and is finally coming out of his shell (meaning he's starting to chew things he shouldn't, despite his multitude of toys).

  • <--- Another "oldie" who's more in and out now, thanks to DS.

I live in Southeast PA with my S/O, our 2-month-old son (in siggie), and two dogs:

Carl, our 3-ish year-old pit bull mix, who's somewhat famous on these boards for his ridiculous antics, the multitude of things of which he is afraid, and his propensity to eat things that are not technically edible. Adopted him in 2010 from the local animal control shelter.

Likes: food, playing fetch, zoomies, swimming, cuddling

Dislikes: S/O's bass guitar. Most of the baby's gear and toys. The vacuum cleaner. People on skateboards or roller blades. Cats.

Here he is, "stuck" under our bed:

    image

And Reese, a somewhat crochety "old lady" (she's 6 or 7 years old) Aussie Shepherd mix. It's a miracle that she tolerates Carl, let alone wrestle with him. A friend of mine asked me to take care of her until he got his own house, and long story short, she's mine now. She came to live with me in December 2008.

Likes: sleeping, doing tricks for food, going for walks in nice weather

Dislikes: Cats. Most other dogs. Going for walks in the rain.

    image

I also have a labrador retriever, Owen. My ex-H and I adopted him from the guy whose house we bought in June 2008. For a variety of reasons, he went to live with my ex and his parents when we separated. Now Reese goes after him when he comes to visit, so for the time being, for his physical and mental health, he stays with my ex. I miss so, SO much. He'll be 5 in March.

Likes: Tummy rubs. Cuddling. Wrestling with Carl. Swimming. Eating snow as it's falling. Rolling in mud puddles. Peanut butter jars. Stuffed kongs. Kids.

Dislikes: Dogs that walk by "his" window. Eating with other dogs nearby. Going for walks when it's hot.

  • Hi!

I'm Ashley.  I've been a Parenting regular for a long time.  I'm a full time pharmacist in a hospital outpatient setting, and I love it.

I have a very high energy 5 year old son, and our newest addition is a 5 month old lab hound mix named Tallulah.  She came to us from a local rescue org after being found with her mom and siblings in the woods.  We're still working on training her.  I'm not sure how old she was when she was separated from her mom.  Housetraining is going well.  She's doing really good with that, but we're being challenged with biting and jumping.

She's a big girl, about 32 pounds right now.  They expect her to be around 80 or so.  She has a large, sturdy lab body and this tiny little hound head.  She's perfection.  I cannot imagine our home without her.
