Re: Aunt

  • My great aunts on my mom's side are auntie (pronounced correctly)

When i speak of the word "aunt" i pronounce it correctly.

But we say it "aint" so and so

I am auntie to my nieces (pronounced the correct way)

    Ant

    Ditto.

Like many other words, it's a regional thing, so who is to say what is correct.  I have no idea how you pronounce it if you just say "pronounced correctly".

That being said I judge people very harshly if they "axe" me a question.

I either straight up ignore kids if they say this to me. That or I say I hope the other person is alive if you axed them.

  • Ant.

The country side of my family says "Aint." And I have one country-side cousin who tries to forget she's from the country and says rhymes-with-haunt.

  • Ant.

I have a friend who is militant about the other pronunciation.  It borders on ridiculous.  It is regional and what you were raised with whether or not it is "correct".

You should put in a poll to see the results easier.  There are only 2 ways, right?

That's why I asked. "Ant" to me is proper.

ant and axe is all the same, it's pronounced the way we heard it growing up.

I always wonder how people pronounce aunt. I say it like "haunt when I speak of the word. But say "aint" to my aunts, but my nieces say auntie to me, pronounced like haunt.

silly to be militant about it. I say aint and auntie (the "correct") way depending on which relative. My DH thinks ant is for hicks. He is from Maine and pronounces it "aunt" as in haunt.

But I think ant is funny, but I dont care if people say it that way

I have heard ant, aunt, aint, (so 3 ways) and then tons of spin offs from the word auntie.

    Ant.

And I do not agree with your statement above.  "Axe" is a complete disregard for the spelling of the word.  I relate it to saying "irregardless" and "supposably".

  • ant.  although i do refer to my closer aunts as "auntie" and pronounce that au sound to rhyme with "haunt".

axe, supposably, nuke-yuh-ler, and my favorite... mars-ca-pone... all drive me batty.  IT'S PRONOUNCED LIKE IT'S SPELLED PEOPLE.

how is "aint" correct??...because it ain't.

fwiw, i say ant.....and i judge people who pronounce it how you're saying is "correct". it makes them seem snobby to me. or like they're trying too hard to be "fancy".

  • Merriam Webster says its "ant"... if you click the little sound button, it pronounces it for you

of course, then it says below that it rhymes with  flaunt so thats contradictory.

    dictionary.com says either is correct.

That's because you ain't fancy dana Stick out tongue

I have lots of regional conflict.  In the Caribbean it's tante (pronounced tant-e and taunt-e long e for both)  We we moved here we always heard ant so we ended up not using either.  Since people made fun or our funny accents :-(

I say pronounce it in whatever manner works for your family.  But ax or axe is a description of a metal cutting device with a handle, not a substitute for the word ask.

Well, that makes sense because "tante" is French for "aunt." I say "ant," but it has occasionally come out as "ain't" when referring to my almost 90 great aunt Katie, probably because of the long a in Katie. It just runs together!
