Re: Abalone's birth story
When we were picking names for N, I put my foot down hard and refused to budge on countless names XH suggested. We agreed N should have a have a traditional Croatian name but he loved several that I couldn't say correctly, even with coaching. I refused to give in on one that would be mispronounced all the time or that might cause him to be made fun of later, even if it was a common name over there. And there were some that I like that were pronounced one way in Croatia but would have been mispronounced here (for example Leo, which I loved but it's pronounced LAY-o there.) And we didn't go with the formal Nikola, which is actually the name of the relative he was named for, because that would likely be assumed to be a girl's name here. I've only heard one person mispronounce N's name, and that's a nurse that has known him since he was born and is still convinced his name is "Nick-O." She's just nuts. Lots of people want to spell it with a C instead of a K when they hear it, since the Italian spelling is more commonly known in this country, but it gets said correctly.
Anyway, I digress from the true point of this thread. Congratulations on your baby girl, GldnGrl. I hope you're settling in well as a family.

I knew when we named her that it was an unusual name and that she could go by Abby. As I have gone by Katie or Kate most of my life even though my name is Kathryn. She also has a very traditional middle name if she chooses in the future she can go by Elizabeth. I went back and forth between Abalone and Abigail. It has significant meaning to us and I'm not really concerned if some people don't like it.
Thank you for all the congrats!
Congratulations to you both. It sounds like you had a wonderful experience with the midwife & center, and you have your precious girl to hold now.
I confess, I keep wanting to call say her name with the "e" at the end, probably because I have tons of the shells. (They're gorgeous, and I love them) I like the significance with you & your H too. Very cool.
