Insurance and License question
So we switched insurance and they said we need Florida drivers license and turn them in to them. Is this common? Do we have to get new license everytime he switches duty stations? I thought we wouldn't have to do that if he was on orders to be in that said state and kept Louisiana as our home state. Pardon me if I am wrong.
TIA:)
Re: Insurance and License question
We didn't have to change our DL when we switched insurance to FL, just when we registered our cars here. Who do you use for insurance? I don't know how much it was where you're from, but we were SHOCKED when it cost like $65 per new license, though it was nice that registering our cars here was SO much cheaper than Las Vegas.
Where in FL are you?
They wouldn't let us register our cars here in FL if we didn't have FL DLs', even knowing H is military.
I ended up switching mine anyway because it was going to expire before I could get a new one in the mail from NV.
They don't require you to list where the car is being driven/kept?
This is why our rates went through the roof, because FL requirement are different than NV.
Yeah when my registration expires in August and I have to switch to VA registration they will probably make me get a VA license. I know H had to get a WA license when he registered his car there. I had switched mine immediately since we PCS'd about a month after the wedding so I never bothered changing my NY license to my married name. But for auto insurance we had no problem with our stuff being from all different states.
I guess it could completely depend on your insurance company too. We have USAA, and they were fine with me giving our VA address even with out of state licenses.
Really!? We have USAA and when I called to switch our renters insurance to FL (2 years ago) they asked about the car and said we had to change them to this address regardless of what state we held DLs from (at the time was NV). Grrr! I wanted to keep my Nevada residency!
Do they actually make you go through that in FL? NH was super relaxed. They took my CA license which was about 1 week expired at the time, made me fill out a form and gave me a temporary NH license the same day.
DH's HOR and our licenses are issued from TN. We are residents of that state.
We were able to register our cars and insure our cars in the United Kingdom and did not have to get UK driver's licenses. Moreover, when we moved to South Carolina we had the option of registering our vehicles in TN (since we are residents legally) or in SC since we are stationed here. We opted for SC out of sheer convenience but we could have done it for TN and then had a SC policy.
We also have USAA and IMO it sounds like they know their shiz a little better than Progressive does. I would also be surprised if you had to go through a whole testing process for a FL license if you possess a valid LA one. I walked right into a DMV in Nashville, TN with all my vital records and a piece of mail addressed to us at MIL's address. I turned in my MO license, took a new pic, and they issued me a new one for $20 or so.
You do NOT have to take a driving test to get a new liscense in Florida. Just putting that out there. The only thing I can think of that would make them do that is if you have an absolutely terrible driving record.
I would call your insurance company again and talk to a manager. You should not have to change your liscense. If they want proof you live there, send a copy of his orders.
Too late now. Whoever we spoke to two years ago told us wrong. Although, I'm happy to pay the $170 to have a car registered here than the $800 in Vegas! Ha!
