Insurance and License question

Re: Insurance and License question

  • It's a flat fee here, so it doesn't really matter on the car. It also goes by your birthday and you can opt to pay for two years at a time. To register a brand new truck and a bike it was like $300 (tops) for just over a year.

This website will have you pick your county and show the locations.

You do NOT have to take a driving test to get a new liscense in Florida. Just putting that out there. The only thing I can think of that would make them do that is if you have an absolutely terrible driving record.

I would call your insurance company again and talk to a manager. You should not have to change your liscense. If they want proof you live there, send a copy of his orders.

I have a clean driving record. I will do this. I am so excited to not have to take a test hopefully. I am not on his orders. Unless I was put on them after we got married I don't know how all that works

I don't think you have to be on his orders specifically. Give them a copy of your MIL ID if you must, to prove that you are his dependent.

The link Marie gave you is to this:

    Good luck.

I am going to have to figure this out because I don't want to have to go through the driving class and tests to just have to change it back in a few years if he decides to get out. I will do it if I have to I just don't really want that hassle

Do they actually make you go through that in FL? NH was super relaxed. They took my CA license which was about 1 week expired at the time, made me fill out a form and gave me a temporary NH license the same day.

MT is super relaxed too. I just renewed my license and switched from OH to MT. I was in and out in 10 minutes with my temporary license and the new one will come in the mail in a couple weeks.

ETA: All I needed to bring was my current license, SSC, birth cert, and a piece of mail with my name & our current address on it proving I lived here.

Did you list your current address or your home of record on your auto insurance? I believe, you have to list your home of record if you don't intend to get a new license. We always list HOR and never have had a problem.

They don't require you to list where the car is being driven/kept?

This is why our rates went through the roof, because FL requirement are different than NV.

I don't recall listing where it was being driven/kept. I'm sure I'd remember if the asked. Hmmm...

I guess it could completely depend on your insurance company too.  We have USAA, and they were fine with me giving our VA address even with out of state licenses.

Really!? We have USAA and when I called to switch our renters insurance to FL (2 years ago) they asked about the car and said we had to change them to this address regardless of what state we held DLs from (at the time was NV). Grrr! I wanted to keep my Nevada residency!

There's a difference between where your car is located (which the insurance companies need to know) and your state of residence.  The drivers license is one way of establishing residence, but it isn't the only way.  I plan to keep my Florida drivers license as long as possible, but some jobs require you to get a local drivers license and yet you can still maintain residency elsewhere.

Unless you really want to maintain residency elsewhere for voting purposes, Florida is a good place to establish residency as it doesn't have state income tax.
