Dear Community,

Our tech team has launched updates to The Nest today. As a result of these updates, members of the Nest Community will need to change their password in order to continue participating in the community. In addition, The Nest community member's avatars will be replaced with generic default avatars. If you wish to revert to your original avatar, you will need to re-upload it via The Nest.

If you have questions about this, please email help@theknot.com.

Thank you.

Note: This only affects The Nest's community members and will not affect members on The Bump or The Knot.

s/o to Pinterest and TN repinning our BUs (esp. if you're on Twitter)

I just sent them a tweet since Gmail is down for me right now. Maybe if we all tweet about it they'll get the point.

Re: s/o to Pinterest and TN repinning our BUs (esp. if you're on Twitter)

  • Hi everyone,

We often link to great content (ie recipes) from the boards. If you don't want your recipes pinned, let me know and I can make a note of it. We would never link to sensitive subject matter, but we do like to promote our community's great tips and ideas to help our message boards grow.

  • Kathleen,

Thanks for replying. I'm pretty sure the majority of us would prefer any pins on Pinterest go directly to our blog and NOT to these boards. These boards, while a great resource I've used for going on 9 years now, are also a place of partial anonymity. Linking our blog recipes to the message boards shows people a side of our lives we might want to keep private. Not to mention it's poor Pinterest etiquette to link a recipe to anywhere other than the place where it originated, i.e. our blogs.

    Thanks!

Well said. Seems like they are using our blog posts and pics to promote these boards.

  • I also want to add, in case Bump Kathleen or anyone else in TN's social media department is reading this - you guys REALLY need to work on your social media policy. The situation with the local boards and the FB and Twitter buttons has effectively killed my local board (NJ) even though the buttons have apparently been removed. Most of the regulars have started their own private board on another site or gone to a secret board on FB. These are women who have been together for 9+ years.

TN's inability to see the big picture and think about its users when making social media changes has done a lot of damage. I get that social media is all the rage but many of us don't want our private lives intersecting with these boards. Period. It's bad for us personally and professionally. So please, have a meeting or five to discuss all these changes, heck do a free survey and post the link on some of the message boards asking for feedback about potential changes being discussed. Show us you give a damn about the people who have made your communities what they are today - the users.

I can't speak for everyone, but I'm flattered when people enjoy my content and want to share it with others. So thank you. But the problem is this (and clearly I have too much time on my hands!)

    image

All the recipes and photos which we have taken the time to create are wrongly attributed to the nest, and do no nothing to actually generate traffic to our blogs, but rather, to this board.

And, while many of us read each other's blogs and know each other by nestie screen name, we might not want the rest of our readers to figure out who we are over here.

Would you please reconsider how you go about this?

This, this, a million times this! I am always flattered when someone enjoys my content, and I am happy to be pinned.  But, it is unfair for the Nest to use our hard work to generate traffic to the boards, rather than our individual blogs. Please fix this now!

    Couldn't agree more!

As someone who uses social media in my line of work and is in charge of social media for my department, I'm pretty floored that y'all haven't even attempted to figure out how to best utilize (and how to NOT use) social media in respect to these boards and your users. Your lack of knowledge of social media and your lack of concern about your users requests is pretty shocking.

ETA: And I don't even USE Pinterest, nor do I have a cooking blog.

  • Hi everyone,

    Thanks for your feedback.

Regarding sharing photos that link directly to your blogs, we're unable to do that for a few reasons. We pin using the "Pin It" button on our page, which automatically links to the page the photo was from. Also, the point of us sharing photos on our Pinterest page is that they come from our site, which in this case is the community. We always credit the username that posted the photo. We greatly value our users' privacy and would never share content that is sensitive. However, since our message boards are public, we often promote them in general, whether that be on our social media or elsewhere on the site - this is what helps them grow.

Regarding the "share it" to Twitter/Facebook feature on the new message boards, we are already in the process of removing these and should be completed by the end of this week.

If you would prefer your photos not be shared, please email feedback@thenest.com with your username and we will make a note that your photos not be pinned in the future.

    Thanks everyone

  • Ditto every pp. I had no idea this was even happening - thanks, Sarah, Cara, et al.
  • I guess TN missed the whole Pinterest TOU issues?? This is exactly the "problem" with Pinterest. TN is pinning pictures that do NOT go back to the original link, which doesn't generate more blog traffic or credit to the original blogger. I'd be pissy if my stuff got pinned this way.

I strongly urge you to reconsider using screen names to promote your communities. The content is the value of the site, not the screen names.

The issue, for me, would be that the screen name I use here is an online ID I created to be unique to TheNest and TheBump. It is not mirrored in my IM accounts, my email accounts, my blog, my social media handles. And that is done with a purpose. Many of us interact not only on one board, and in some way or fashion, often end up sharing some personal information. Yes, the onus is on each of us to be careful and responsible, but there's also a responsibility placed upon you, as the site, to not breach our privacy.

If it was suddenly very simple for a random friend, family member, co-worker, or employer to tie the content I post to this site with my real name and ID, I would absolutely walk away from the communities here without a second thought, and I know that there are others who would do the same. I've taken measures on my end to protect a certain level of anonymity - you should do the same for your users.

Actually, it just requires you to take a few extra minutes and click on the blog link instead of just using the pin button on the page. Not that hard.

I guess you fail to see that there's a connection between the boards in this community. If you know someone's screen name you can find them on other boards without much effort. And if you are able to link someone's screen name to their blog, now you know way more about that person then they ever planned to share.

I'm shaking my head so hard I have a headache. I've been on these boards for a long, long time and lately I'm asking myself why. TN needs to get a clue and FAST.

I'm sorry, but this is unacceptable (and you can absolutely credit our blogs, it is just that you simply refuse to). I have sent you an email to request that you do not pin any of my pictures/recipes as long as you refuse to credit my blog.

I figured they had something like this in their Terms of Use:

The Nest reserves the right to republish any material contributed by our readers. By posting a message, a subscriber expressly grants the right to The Nest to republish or sell the message as part of any edited compilation such as The Daily Poop or Nest Baby News. Material that is copyright protected may not be submitted without permission from the copyright owner. Since there are many thousands of possible sources spread out across the Internet, it is impossible for us at The Nest to know if a posting represents a copyright infringement. Please remember you are responsible for the material you submit to The Nest, including taste, reliability, originality and copyright. Author(s) may be held legally responsible for copyright infringement, defamation or invasion of privacy, as well as any damages arising out of actions resulting from materials submitted by you and posted by The Nest. You are responsible for ensuring that your message or posting does not violate any extant copyrights. If you believe that your copyrighted material has been posted to The Nest without permission, please seehttp://www.theknot.com/au_copyright.shtml for our policies regarding its removal. The Nest will have a nonexclusive global license to publish the content submitted by users and contributors within The Nest. The Nest will also have global nonexclusive adaptation and resale rights over any content and material submitted by users and contributors within The Nest's World Wide Web sites. These nonexclusive publishing license and resale/adaptation rights extend to any materials submitted "for publication" within The Nest, including both message board postings and content submitted to The Nest for uploading and subsequent publishing within non-message board Areas. The Nest and The Nest's staff are not and will not be responsible for any misleading, false, or otherwise injurious information and advice communicated in our Area or for any results obtained from the use of such information or advice. The Nest will not be liable for any loss or damage suffered by a user through the user's reliance on information and advice gained in this Area. (Sounds serious, right? We don't mean to scare you! It's just physically impossible for us to control forums such as the message boards, and we trust our Nest Baby users' good sense and intelligence to make informed decisions on their own!)

  • I totally agree with everyone, and thank you for pointing this out.  I just sent an email requesting they no longer pin my photos unless it goes to my blog and does not have my screen name.

I would hate to no longer participate on the board, but I am afraid that is the next step for me if things don't change.

  • I see that they have already pinned some of my recipes/pictures with my SN - is there any way to get these removed? I'm new to Pinterest and am unaware of the guidelines.

  • Thanks for alerting us all about this.  I've asked TN to remove my content and to stop using my photos going forward. This is absurd.
  • It seems to me TN turns a blind eye to the functionality its users want as well as a true understanding of how their users use the boards. Its seems you have all the information right in front of you by reading the posts on this board, yet what is developed seems so far off the beaten path.

I for one also do not want my nest name associated with my Facebook account, Pinterest account or any other form of media like that. If that is where the nest wants to go then I would no longer use these boards either.

I understand why TN wants to post the blog links to Pinterest but that doesn't make it o.k. to do so. None of that content was generated on TN and to advertise it as such is to not only slight the person who created the content but to falsely advertise your site. I hope you will rethink this policy.

Also, am I the only one who wonders how carefully someone is really going to follow this list of people not to be pinned. I think all of you who have blogs such certainly request not to be pinned as it clearly does a disservice to bloggers.

I think it's an issue where laws haven't caught up with social media yet. But if I'm wrong and TN doesn't have the "right" to republish blog update posts to Pinterest the way that they are, I'm happy to be wrong!

  • I can?t imagine you?re going to find anyone who is okay with this. Asking people to email you (which I will do, obviously, if that?s what I need to do) is so back ass-ward. You ask first (or at least TELL PEOPLE) before you do this. The original post was written behind the guise of generating traffic to our blogs, which is obviously not happening. And that alone would suck, but to post our screen names alongside is just ridiculous and unacceptable that you would not make this known ahead of time.

And this is not being used on some area THE NEST. It?s one thing to put my post in the Daily Poop (dear god that needs a new name) but it?s not acceptable to put this on Pinterest. That?s seriously like plastering a picture of my kid on pinterest with a link back to a post I made on TN so anyone who recognizes my son on Pinterest can now find all my posts on TN/TB.

You can also put images in your siggies w/o them being re-pined.
