If you want to move to an Offsite Boards

I look into active board because it's what I am familiar with. We can do free which has a small advertisement, and limited features (not sure what these are). Otherwise $7.95 per month for no ad.

What other ones can we compare too?

Re: If you want to move to an Offsite Boards

  • I probably wouldn't pay to go on forums or something similar. not sure if I'm the minority here or not...

  • I wouldn't pay to join a board.

Proboards is another option. Completely free.

  • My local board moved to ProBoards. It's free. It's different from the nest, but most of us actually like it more. You can also make it so people who want to join have to be approved by an admin to cut down on trolls and AEs.

  • Our local board moved to proboards last week, and it has been great so far.

We selected proboards because it is free, simple, and has a good mobile app (for $2.95).

  • I wouldn't pay.

  • Proboards as you said looks completely free. I don't care which one but really want an active offsite space.

I just laid Maddy down for a nap and would be more then willing to create something this afternoon. Should we do a poll seeing which people can get to easiest at work? Or what would be best. Also I wouldn't want to be the only admin.

Oh, and it passes the D.C. Nestie's "my work's computer network is on super lockdown" test... no one has complained about it being blocked at work.

I like the option of a mobile app too, as I know a lot of us post from a phone, ipad etc.

If you set it up I'll be an admin as well.

  • love this idea!  I would pay for a mobile app, but not for the regular board.

  • Looks like I can access the Proboards website...positive sign for an actual board.

  • I like the idea of the board with a mobile app.

    Let's do it!

I can do it if you need me to. I'm not around as much as I used to be but if there is the mobile app I can probably be on more often.

  • I just want to say that I think it would be a great loss if everyone here migrated elsewhere. I didn't even realize that WC did photo daily photo blog updates. And I know about it because of Pinterest. I saw so many awesome looking recipes posted via the Pinterest link. I will surely be now actually going to some of your blogs because of the Pinterest link.

I can understand why some people feel squeamish about their loss of privacy, but in all honesty, you don't really have it to begin with if you post your blog in your nest signature, especially if you also have identifying photos in your signature. Everyone on the nest is googable. You can be found whether your blog is linked here or on Pinterest. If this is a problem you should probably reconsider whether or not you want your personal blog linked to your nest account in the first place.

    So to sum...

    1. Don't go. Your food looks great!

    2. The Pinterest link is probably a benefit to your blog.

    3. The loss of privacy began the day you posted your blog to the nest...and the internet in general.

I love this idea. I don't post a ton but I could be an admin if you needed one. I'd pay for the mobile app I could post more.

I wonder if there's a way to have people write a note when they apply to join the boards, like an introductory post the admins can see.

  • Proboard sounds good to me. I also wouldn't pay for an online message board.
  • I'll be honest: I don't really want to move to a different board.

First of all, like others have said, it's the internet, and everything is public.  I'm not thrilled about the nest pinning my pictures with a link to the boards, but I don't see it as any sort of threat either.  Those pins have a negligible effect on how easy it would be for someone to find out personal information about me.

Second, as much as I enjoy the core group we have here, I don't really want to be limited to just those people.  It's nice to have the occasional new person come on and ask for a great macaroni and cheese recipe or how to freeze pizza dough.  There are so many complaints about the board being too slow lately - limiting our users to just the people who are here today and post often is going to slow it down much more.

  • proboard sounds fine.  if you need another admin, i would be happy to help.

  • Can we use our Nest names (not our real names) on proboards?

yes, I just got the board set up still changing settings etc. You can use a nest name.

I don't have a food blog or use pinterest so I can't speak about the first part of your post but I kind of feel the opposite way of you regarding the last part. I think if we did have a more defined community we may actually pick up traffic. People would probably be more willing to post NCR things and talk about other topics more often as well.

You are absolutely right, it could have negative impact on the board/group's activity but it could also improve it.

Let's be honest, one of the biggest reasons why this board has slowed down so much lately is many of our former regulars have moved off the board. I'm certainly not "in the know" about it all but to my knowledge they haven't created another board, just moved their conversations to Twitter and email. Maybe they have created a board, I don't know.

I clearly don't really have issues with the privacy thing or anything that everyone else is worried about regarding pinterest and blogs, I just would love to see that sense of community back to this group and it doesn't appear that'll happen through a board on this site any more for various reasons.

I totally agree with this. Although I am in my own predicament. In less than a week my blog and catering company will be linked and obviously I am pretty much giving up my privacy at that point.

It wouldn't do me much good to change my screen name if people can still access my name, phone number and company name through the blog eh?

sigh. I wouldn't mind visiting an off site board but to be honest, if it came to that I would probably bow out of this. Thankfully I am friends with a few of you on FB and fans of just about everyone's blog FB page.

Agree 100%. This board has been dead a long time now.

See, my catering company and blog are also linked (blog on company website), no direct link from blog to comany, if that makes sense).  but I'm actually not concerned about people knowing my full name and phone number or whatever.  I'm more concerned about someone being able to click on my SN and see all of my posts.  I dont' talk much personal stuff here, but I do on my anniversary board.  I don't like the idea of someone on Pinterest recognizing one of my pics on TN pinboard, following links, and seeing everything I post about my H, mom, whatever on my anni board.  KWIM?

This is pretty much how I feel, too. I honestly don't post a lot of things that anyone would consider "bad" but it still doesn't mean I want people I know IRL reading everything.

To the pp who said everyone is google-able - sure, if they know your screen name. That's the problem I have with my photo being linked not only to a board on TN, but to  my screen name.

Honestly, I probably wouldn't participate in an offboard, largely because I don't even post quite as frequently here as I used to. I talk to others via FB, email, etc. and this is more of an additional resource to me than the only one, if that makes sense.
