What's the last $$$ reno you've done to your house?
Re: What's the last $$$ reno you've done to your house?
We've only been in the house six months, but we've spent 10k in renovations/upgraded appliances. Still, we've done a TON (in my opinion).
$1850 - Removed carpet and put in tile in 2 bathrooms, entryway, kitchen, breakfast nook, laundry room (materials + labor)
$2500 - Removed carpet and put in laminate floors in den (materials + labor)
$1500 - Removed wallpaper & repainted 2 bathrooms, entryway, kitchen, breakfast nook, laundry room (materials + labor)
$950 - All new fixtures and accessories for both bathrooms, plus labor to install everything
$3200 - New washer/drawer, oven, over-the-range micro, and fridge, plus labor to install
Next up: our next bonus/fun money will go to retiling the master shower or getting new kitchen counter tops.
We're also keeping a special fund to replace our A/C heating system when it goes. That's the only thing in this house that hasn't been updated and will likely go soon, and that'll hurt because it'll be the only thing where we can't really "see" the improvement. Except maybe our heating bills will be lower ... that would be nice!
We spent $11,000 on a new roof and gutters.
$5,000 on landscaping and new walkway
$6,900 on tankless water heater and water system

We spent somewhere in the neighborhood of $80K on a new layout for about 1/3 of our house. It's a million times better for us (2 bedrooms rather than 1), but we'll never see that cash again. Even with the better layout, we're down a few hundred thousand. This is our forever house, hopefully, and our expensive hobby and baby, so we don't really consider resale value.
Next we'll be ripping out the c. 1965 kitchen and returning it to 1910ish. I'm guessing that will be another $20K down the tubes, depending on how much we can DIY. Well, that will be after the new roof, but I don't really count maintenance, since that has to be done.
We worked hard to do it on the cheap (but hopefully not cheap-looking).
Hopefully you get good deals on your appliances, they can be so expensive! We shopped sales for ours and got our Samsung fridge for $800 by getting Lowes to price match it when it was on clearance at another store. I'm so proud of that purchase lol.
We have been renovating slowly over 4 years The home we reside in currently. We are spending about 8k for the bathroom. Nothing fancy just needs a huge makeover. The house was built in the 40's so you can imagine. wasted space, old plumbing and fixtures. Nothing is pink just dated. Before that we dumped 10k in a new boiler. Before that 2k for a new fence for the back yard. 8k for new door frames and window frames. Just typing this makes me realize over 4 years its but 28k. and we have a way to go...
I guess it depends where you live which determines the cost. We owned a home in Pgh, Pa renovated a kitchen and rewired the whole house, had to replaster and sheet rocked where needed on the first and second floor put in new flooring, put in new heating system. It was about 70k.
