2 things: this board sucks now, and I think moving to a pro-board was a bit of an over reaction.
This board sucks bc it was a great place to come and browse recipes, ask questions, chat about food, etc. Not everyone is/was a super foody here and most didn't have blogs. I lurked because I have at times used cream of chicken in my crockpot, frozen veggies microwaved, and packet seasonings and sauces. What I would have added to the conversation would not have been good advice or up to the standards here. I didn't post much, but definitly loved seeing your beautiful creations every day in the blog updates. I have made book marked many, and made many for dinner. I loved learning new and healthy techniques and recipes, but the board activity is down to a fraction of what it used to be.
And now, (zips up fire proof suit) - what was the big deal with the Nest pinning your pictures? Thats is what pinterest is, a place to pin cool things you see on the internet. They didn't print your recipe or your full name. The pin would have brought the clicker back to the nest boards, where they would find your picture, and click through to your blog. Its a bit of a round about way, but it probably did drive traffic to your blogs. Unless someone can look at a picture and know how to re-create it, the user will click through. The nest wasn't taking credit for your picture or your recipe. I just don't get the outrage.
Also, one more thing as more of a general nest board question. Why are the blog updates posts okay, while someone posting a link to their blog that is a business not okay? I know some of you make money off your blog, so it seems hypocritical when someone gets reported and yelled at for doing what is (actually, what used to be done) on a daily basis.
Re: Probably flameful: This board sucks now
I agree with you. The whole separate, private board thing is annoying in terms of the food-related posts. I think people may have gotten a little too comfortable sharing personal, non-CR stuff on here (a public board) and the new private board allows them to continue to do that (totally reasonable, people formed a community of people they're friends with), but I'd love to see the food stuff come back here. To be honest, there's not that much going on food and cooking related on the new board anyway.
ETA: The board would improve a lot if people would post instead of lurking. You don't need to be a gourmet chef to have an interest in food, or in finding new recipes to try. Even the WFD? posts are sucking, and come on, the vast majority of people are going to eat dinner, so post!
I have to agree with you on the Proboards thing. I lurk/post on multiple boards, and originally, I didn't want to leave since one site is just easy. (yup, I'm lazy) It seemed like all of the WC gals jumped ship and left, so a couple of days later, I ended up joining.
I really do wish we just came back to this board, though.
The Nest problem, was because they would pin your recipes with your nest username. I think The Nest is a place to be kind of anonymous (kind of), and putting it out on Pinterest for the world to see, made it easy for anyone to wonder what does this blogger post about on the message boards...I think that was the main problem.

But the nest boards are public also, no?
Yes, they are public. My issue with it is that its linking one username to another. my name on here isn't my blog name nor is it the name I use on Pinterest. I do realize thats kind of stupid because I have my blog name in my sig, but the point for me is that it was my choice to put it there just like its my choice to remove it. I don't believe for one second The Nest should have any rights to make that decision for me.

I tend to agree with you. I did join the other board, but I don't really like the format of it and I still visit other boards on TN/TB so it's not like I've shunned TN altogether.
The pinning issue was because it linked the pic to your user name. So, everyone and their mother is on pinterest now and if someone saw a picture on pinterest they recognized from my blog, they could then see (and link to) my username on here, and read anything I've ever posted and didn't want them to know. Yes, TN is public, but I don't go around telling people my username, and it's different than usernames I have for other things.
What I don't get (and did randomly bring up but no one responded to) is people from the proboards still (and largely, only) posting BUs on here. I think that kinda sucks.
Anyway, the other thing is that TN just keeps doing all this crap to link people to social media, which is ridiculous (i.e. you can "like" someone's profile on here and then it will post their full name on facebook - not cool), so it's no like it was JUST the pinning issue. I think a lot of people mostly just wanted a more private board.
When the talk of moving to another board started, lurkers came out of the woodwork to say they loved seeing recipes and getting ideas from BU posts, so they hoped that wouldn't stop if people moved. I think that may be partly why some people still come back and post them. I'm sure another part is not wanting to lose ad revenue, but I'm anti-ad so I'm just speculating (I'm also guessing that ad revenue is your assumption, and thus why you think it kinda sucks).
I mostly lurk rather than post because I'm too lazy to keep up with a blog and really enjoy seeing what people share here. But I also don't expect people to keep up a board I'm not active on just because sometimes I may want to stop by.
Overall nest activity has dropped a lot in the past year for privacy concerns, a lot of the boards I'm active on have moved to other places. In the Nest's quest to better market themselves they keep raising privacy concerns and violating privacy expectations.
Ditto!

I don't make any money on my blog. I just love to share the recipes I enjoy, especially with people that love food too.
As TPOX said, a bunch of lurkers were sad that they were going to be missing blog updates and it only takes an extra second to post my blog update here too. So, that's why I continue to post BUs...
My nest local defected as well to a private board because the new format (which still isn't used on the national boards) was so awful and the nest was doing nothing to fix it. I generally think TPTB at the nest are pretty bad and non-responsive, so leaving was sparked by the Pinterest thing, but it was the culmination of a lot of frustration for me.
I still post things here when I have something to say, but I am much more active on proboards.
If you want these boards not to "suck," why not post something interesting and non-sucky instead of complaining about it...
So Tasty, So Yummy
I agree with this 100%.
x2
The pinning thing was annoying to me, and MWC described exactly why. But we told the nest we were unhappy and they stopped doing it within a day or two. So I don't really get the big deal.
I also agree with MWC that the format of the new board sucks asss, which, oddly, keeps me from posting there as often as I might otherwise.
Also, I miss lurkers and random question-askers. It was nice to be able to help newer cooks out.
my food blog
I agree as well.
I wasn?t especially upset over the Pinterest deal. I don?t think what TN did was right but I have always been careful about what I post so I wasn?t really concerned about someone making the connection to my nest name. With that said though, I understand why it really upset some people. Just because you don?t understand why the Pinterest thing is a big deal isn?t really relevant--It bothered the people who it affected and they found a solution that worked for them (whether that be creating a new SN, not posting pictures with their BU, or moving to the new board).
I always have questions, but never want to be annoying.
I browse through the blog updates post daily and always find a bunch of recipes to try out - so many actually that I think I have a year's worth of dinners and apps to try to make.
I really should start being more active, because I do come daily.
I understand why people left and I don't fault them for that if it makes them more comfortable. To each his own. But before the new format came out, I checked the My Posts section all.the.time because I could tell if someone has responded to a thread I posted on. It would tell you if anyone added to the thread or not so I didn't have to go digging through every single post all the time to see people's responses. That part is gone now. When I emailed TN they said they can't fix it. Really? I'm thinking you can you just don't want to. I post on the IF board on TB a lot lately but I've stopped posting on other ones simply cause I don't have the time to sort through every single thread I post on. I know this doesn't have much to do with the OP of this thread but I wasn't sure if anyone else was bugged by this. Sorry to hijack if I did. Here's a piece of pizza for reading.
on the bottom of the board page, you can sort by threads you've commented on. apply temporarily and you'll see it in the old 'my posts' format.
AHA. Thanks so much MWC for explaining that because I hadn't realized that was the root cause (nestnames linking pinterest back here to the boards) and I'm glad it wasn't all about sour grapes about whether what you post here is public content or not (because, right or wrong, it is, and the nest has never been secretive about that).
I have been on the nest for eight years (shoot me now) since ML was the ONLY board. What's Cooking has been through many iterations and it will go through many more, all of the boards on the nest have ebbs and flows.
If you've always been a Wannabe and always wanted to be a Queen Bee, NOW IS YOUR TIME TO SHINE.
But yes, keep posting!!! The board only dies ... well it never will that's the thing. Keep calm and carry on.
I apologize for my being quiet on WC lately, it's purely coincidental with life stuff right now.
Yeah that's right my name's Yauch!
I think the reason there isn't a lot of board traffic is because there is only so many times you can say "that looks great" or "can't wait to try it"
I check in here every single day and it is so easy to go to the BU for a concise place to check blogs updates that interest me.
I asked for a sign, this must be it.
Would the former regs consider coming back if we start posting a bunch of really interesting and super fun posts?
I understand the pinterest concern, but I'm bummed too. I check WC during my daily rotation of the nest and enjoyed reading/responding to posts.
The last thing I need/have time for is another social media place to check. FB, pinterest, and thenest are more than enough. :-)
Ditto!!!!
I go over to the new board, but the layout and not being able to find posts etc. makes me come back over to here. My local board is packed up and gone to FB and that is a pain too. I hate all of this division that has been created.
I still post quite a bit outside of the BU's but in the defense of those that only post the BU on WC, people came out of the wood work all but begging the bloggers to come back to update that thread since it is so convenient for a quick run through to see what piques interest.
I'm pretty sure that was a run-on sentence...lol.
Proboards is the name of the hosting site. Nothing else.
