Is there an "it" bag on college campuses?

My cousin is graduating from HS this year and will be the second one in my family attending a 4 year college.

So I'd like to get her something nice for graduation and I was thinking of getting her a bag to carry her books.

When I was in college Kate Spade was "the" bag to have (you know those black boxy ones?).

Is there a bag of the moment now?

I feel like an out of touch old lady for asking this question.

  • I live in a college town, and I'm pretty sure it's a requirement of admission for the girls here to carry Vera Bradley tote bags.  I personally hate all things Vera and think the prints are hideous, but the girls here seem to go crazy over them.

I don't know this kid or this monkey, but their side-eyes are strong.

  • I'm guessing this will vary by region, where will she be going to school?

    This

Yep. It was 100000% Vera when I was in college.

Girls even had their sorority tshirts with the Greek letters in Vera prints to match their bags.

  • I'd probably go for the Longchamp Le Plaige tote.

    I second this.

  • I'm in grad school now, and 80% of my classmates have come straight from undergrad (wanna talk about feeling like an old lady? lol) and I'm on an undergrad campus.  There doesn't seem to be any consistency with what bags they carry.  There's no Vera Bradley here at all, so that's campus-dependent.

  • I was in a college campus yesterday, and you would see all kinds of bag, did not see any vera bradley. I did see a bunch of stylish young girls (freshman, sophmore looking) that one had a LV NF, but all other had a TB tote, different colors and either canvas or nylon.

  • I was going to say TB for here too. Both my current and my past assistant (both cute college girls) wear back packs (North Face I think) and carry TB purses. I'm never actually on the campus, but live in a college city and I hardly ever see Vera stuff carried around here.

We also have a lot of girls that carry Patagonia/outdoor type bags here too since we're in the mountains, but I'm sure that's a regional thing.

  • Wow, I'm surprised about the Vera Bradley.

I was looking at the Longchamp bags, but I wasn't sure if they were still considered cool, haha.

My cousin will be going to school outside of Boston.

  • I went to Villanova (Philly suburbs) and based on a recent trip to campus, Tory Burch is EVERYWHERE. I think the Le Pliage would be good too, though. Certainly much more affordable.
  • My sister is in college (well she attempts to go to class between bomb threats) and has several bags but the one she uses the most is her Lilly Pulitzer original tote. She also has a Burberry tote, MBMJ, and Coach tote but she hates to use them cause they get so beat up. She is a big fan of slim crossbody purses for when she is on campus and goes out, maybe that would be a good gift.

ETA: My sister also loves her card id wristlet. She has had a couple of Vera Bradley, her current one is Lilly Pulitzer. But they are great since you have to have your id for everything, esp. as a freshman and they are easy to toss in any bag.

I'd get her the longchamp tote.  A good friend of mine from Boston has 3 of them in different colors.  She is not a college student though.

  • I would go with the Longchamp. When I was in Boston I saw them everywhere. But TB would be really nice as well.

ETA: I used my large Le Pliage as a book bag and loved it. It fits so much. Plus it's easy to clean.

  • I would go with a Longchamp.  Vera was in for college girls here (Philly area) about 3 or 4 years ago.  Hell, I want a Longchamp : /

    Bostonian over here...

Vera vera vera vera...everywhere. With monograms. Vera makeup bags, vera clutches (Tory Burch clutches too). and Lily Pulitzer clothing if you're in a sorority. Sigh.

  • oh geez... not VB! So I was talking with my neighbors yesterday who both have daughters in 4th and 5th grade. THEY want Vera Bradley!! The 4th and 5th graders, lol.  In fact, one girl told her mom she wanted a VB but that she didn't know what one was. But she still wanted one. :/

  • I'm in college and I have a VB. I loveee it. It's great for carrying all my stuff - it really holds up! If you go VB, I recommend a backpack instead of an over the shoulder. Books get heavy! FWIW, I have the Metro.
  • I don't think you can go wrong with Kate Spade.  But I'm just trying to think of what could fit books in it.

Agreed, Vera is definitely passe in this area.

  • Vera Bradley??? I weep for our future.

Anything you can achieve through hard work, you could also just buy.
  • Longchamp for Boston.  Vera is good for smaller items but not for a bag for books (makeup case, pencil case, etc.)

    hahahah Yes

My mom has tons of high school kids (in Maryland) that LOVE Vera.  She works with a young teacher who took a day off work for the Vera Bradley outlet opening.  And one of her interns loves this certain Vera pattern- I give that the side eye because they all look the same to me.

That being said I love the TB bags pp suggested.  I would be smitten to receive one of those, haha.

Took a day off? That is extreme.

I want one of those TB bags now! ahh!
  • Vera Bradley is a really southern thing. I hadn't even heard of them until recently
  • Wait...on second thought a Vera Outlet? Really?
  • I'm in college right now and I don't really see an it bag on our campus. Not all girls carry purses. A lot of them just use North Face bookbags. I have my bookbag and carry my Coach bag

Hmm, really? I also live and work in Boston and I can't remember the last time I saw someone carrying a  VB. Maybe in the 'burbs...I guess I don't spend much time on college campuses, though.

I also think Longchamp is a safe bet, but I personally prefer the look/structure of the TB totes posted above.
