Really YHL? Oil-rubbed bronze FABRIC chairs
I thought this was a joke when I read today's post. By the end of the post, they admit as much that this is crazy. Why can't they just invest in some good chairs? I personally don't care for much about this dining room, including their table. I really think this spray painted upholstery is just terrible, and I don't see it as a stop-gap solution.
Sherry, put the spray paint down!

Re: Really YHL? Oil-rubbed bronze FABRIC chairs
This is another April Fools joke, right?
Sherry seriously needs to get over her aversion to the sewing machine. The solution to saggy slipcovers is actually fixing the slipcovers, not spraypainting your upholstered chairs.
Metallic fabric looks terrible next to the natural wood table.

I really hate their dining room. They need a new table and chairs anyway. I actually would rather she just left them alone then spray paint them. To me a new set is a good investment, not something to search craigslist for.
In a year their whole house will be yellow and oil rubbed bronze. (even though most of their decorations already are.)
Word.
Those totally gross me out. Can you imagine going over there and then having to sit on the chairs? I would be afraid it would ruin my clothes.

Eh, they're $25 chairs. Give her a break. The beauty of buying cheap furniture off of Craigslist is that you can experiment with it. Part of that is learning from your mistakes. And playing around with different methods of decorating and figuring out what works and what doesn't.
It doesn't look that horrible and she probably won't keep them for that long. Once their book comes out, they'll be able to afford any old chairs they want.
She's not the first person ever to paint upholstered furniture. Anyone watch Trading Spaces 10 years ago? They painted stuff like that all the time!
I am usually on board with most things, but this.. I don't know. It looks uncomfortable.

It looks better than the brown. I really hated the brown.
I've painted fabric before. Its no big deal, and there is no way it will ever come off on your clothes.
While the idea of spray painting chairs is soooo stupid, I do think that they look better. They are really trying to polish a turd with these chairs so just about anything is an improvement.
I did the same thing to a pair of bridesmaid shoes. they were dyed pink and I didn't need pink shoes so I spray painted them silver. They are still soft and held up pretty darn good.
I'm just hoping that while she sprayed all these chairs (and seriously, how many cans did that take???) she also sprayed the lab chairs from the kitchen.
the slip covers were awful, but this is equally as awful!
if they want fun green chairs BUY FUN GREEN CHAIRS! it's okay to spend money sometimes!

Word x2.
The baggy slipcovers looked way better than textured fabric with some spray paint.

The only thing I like about their dining room is the built-ins. The whole, "walk right into the dining room as soon as you open the front door" freaks me out. I have no rational answer for it, but it's just weird.
Buy decent slipcovers and call it a day!
i dont know you, but i think i love you for this post.
*slaps forehead*
Word.
Spray painted fabric usually feels kind of creepy (did yhl learn nothing from Trading Spaces and Hilde painting a sofa?)....and it smells like solvent for awhile, which makes it an odd choice for YHL since they are so careful about voc's and Clara.
Ha! I totally remember this episode. Scary.
I actually like their round DR table & keep envisioning linen or white cotten slipcovered chairs around that table. Would be cheap & pack a punch.
Couldn't they have used their credit at Joss & Main to get something? Or wait for a sale at World Market to get some decent chairs? I agree that this is filler for the blog. But what it reinforces with me is that there is lots of really bad DIY out there (among the really great DIY). To me, their chair "experiment" is just a waste of money. I think they need to be able to buy a couple of options, see what works in their space, and return what doesn't work.
Also, they don't seem to be budging on the awful science stools. Can't that come in the way of Sherry's spray paint stream somehow?
the more I think about this the more I think they are drinking the crazy juice.
there are SO many great options for fabric out there, buy some great fabric and hire someone to sew slipcovers that FIT.

I don't understand why they didn't just save up for what they wanted originally. Or maybe just bought a few chairs at a time. Cheap is not always good.
