Really YHL? Oil-rubbed bronze FABRIC chairs

Re: Really YHL? Oil-rubbed bronze FABRIC chairs

  • I don't usually jump into the YHL mix, but this looks terrible.

And, I cannot imagine how bad it stinks and how weird painted fabric would feel to sit on.

  • I hate them. I can understand her not wanting to spend money on dining chairs that can be expensive, but that looks really bad and has to feel that way too.

I would love to know how much she has spent total on experimenting with these chairs.

Okay so from what I have gathered she has spent:

    $25 each chair x 8 chairs = $200

$10 on fabric paint in green + a qt of granny smith paint (she didn't include the cost) I'm guessing $10 = $20

    $20 each slipcovers x 8 + fabric dye $5.00= $165.00

$50 in ORB spray paint cans x6 , for a grand total of $435.00

I think it's a huge waste of money and I would have sat on any hand me down for free until I could come up with the money to buy the chairs I really wanted. That's not being very frugal to me.

You hit the nail on the head.   I think there is a big difference between being frugal and wasting money by disguising bad design choices as being cheap fixes.

Most of their cheap fixes wind up being more expensive than if they had just shopped wisely for what they wanted in the beginning, but I do wonder if it is planned, just for the number of blog posts.  I don't really care if it is, but they should be more upfront about it if it is.

  • I think they do lots of things just to do them. I mean, we're all clicking to look at these ugly chairs, with the $ they make in per view ads they can buy a new set. :)
  • I don't think they were that bad to begin with, hotel fabric texture aside. They look bizarre spray painted.  And I hate that table.
  • Yeah, I thought they were hideous.

      ITA.  Here is proof.

Hmmm?my guess is you will be re-upholstering them very soon! Can?t hurt to try, though!

    • Erinsays:

Sorry guys, but I agree too :(
I don?t like them at all (and I love everything that you both do, you are talented).
I wouldn?t feel comfortable sitting on them, I?d want a towel or something on the seat :/ .
I think that your best bet (only time invested) would be to take in the slip covers to fix them (trust me you can do it Sherri!) or buy lots of fabric to reupholster/ or slipcover them all.

It?s just like sitting on our dyed slipcovers, the color is locked in so ya wouldn?t need a towel! But we definitely are thinking about recovering them down the line, so we?ll just live with them for now and see where we end up!

Eh, they're $25 chairs. Give her a break. The beauty of buying cheap furniture off of Craigslist is that you can experiment with it. Part of that is learning from your mistakes. And playing around with different methods of decorating and figuring out what works and what doesn't.

It doesn't look that horrible and she probably won't keep them for that long. Once their book comes out, they'll be able to afford any old chairs they want.

No, they WERE $25 chairs. Until they spent an additional $20 per chair on slip covers. Plus the cost of green dye that didn't work out. Plus the cost of brown dye that didn't work out. Plus the cost of the spray paint. In the end, let's just give a conservative estimate and say she spent $50 per chair.

Now she has $50 chairs that look like crap. Next to her expensive table that is BEAUTIFUL and that she pined over forever. Yes, part of learning is making mistakes. When are they going to learn from theirs exactly. I'mthisclose to not even bothering anymore with them. They make some of the most foolish decisions!
