Do you have an accent?

If so, do you realize that you have an accent?

I think I have a benign "TV reporter" voice, but whenever I find myself around Midwesterners, they swear I have a noticeable Southern accent.

Do you imagine Nesties talking with an accent when you read what they write?

This is my siggy.

Re: Do you have an accent?

  • To my friends from Jersey I have a Canadian-style flat A ('ehccent', if you will), and my H thinks I have a bit of a Jersey accent. I'm sure I totally have a southern accent at this point, too. lol.

  • People usually can't guess where I am from by my accent.

I like that. I also like being able to whip out an accent when I feel the need. :)

I don't give people accents. Perhaps I should, though.

I agree with everything that muddled said. You should listen to her. -ESDReturns
  • I have 2 (apparently).  People in TX can always tell that I'm from "up north" and my family back home tells me I'm starting to sound southern.

I don't really know how this works out, but I think I'm supposed to move to like Kansas or somewhere in between.

  • I have a hybrid - boston accent mixed with a bit of southern twang that I have picked up over the years of living here. My parents think I sound like I'm from the south, the people in the south think I sound like I'm from Boston.
  • I've been told I have no accent at all.  I was raised in Washington DC.

But I live in Nashville now, so when I get drunk, I slur and drawl because it's funny.

  • I have a slight NY accent....you can hear it on certain words.

  • I have always been bummed by the fact that I have no accent. Though when I went to grad school in the Midwest, they all loved to laugh when I said "wicked"...I don't think I actually have any sort of accent.

I do a pretty terrible Southern drawl-Cockney hybrid that will make your skin crawl though! It's a little Eliza Doolittle (before she gets fancied up) mixed with Scarlett O'Hara (after Rhett slaps her). Maybe I'll get drunk and do it at the gtg!

  • It depends who I'm talking to.  I sound like I'm from Wisconsin/Midwest.  I have that nasal, Midwestern sound.  Although, I think it's pretty generic and how actors sound in shows or movies where they aren't trying to sound like they are from a specific region in the US.

My FI is from central Illinois and he has a little bit of a southern twang to his voice.  His voice sticks out like a sore thumb when he's among people from my part of Wisconsin.  You can definitely tell he's not from around here.  It's funny how 500 or so miles makes that much of a difference...especially since he's still technically from the Midwest.

I picture some people on this board with accents. Only if they've told where they're from.

  • I always imagine Interro with a Boston accent.  I think it's precisely because of her use of the word "wicked."

Are you sure that's Southern and not Country you are hearing?

What's funny is that even though I know you aren't from the South, in my head you are from the South.  You seem like you should be with your sundresses and love of cooking. I know that's a bad stereotype, but in my head that's how I picture you!   I picture you sitting on a white porch swing, in a yellow floral sundress sipping sweet tea.

Not sure but to me it sounds a little Southern (he doesn't sound like a hick! LOL). I know a few other people from a little bit further down in IL and they sound like that too...and they aren't from farm country!

Awww I pretty much love this. Please carry on with this mental picture of me! I prefer it to the reality, which is more likely that I'm a little Yankee bratface.

  • I imagine BBE being Southern-ish too.  If you cross her, she'll be all sweet-as-pie to your face and bless your heart a lot, but behind closed doors she's baking you a shiit pie.

I also imagine her to talk a million miles an hour when she gets excited.

    This is my siggy.

    Hmmm this is all true.

Also I am extremely loud. I have a loud voice and a loud laugh and I have a hard time controlling those things. I'm sure it's super annoying.

  • Yes apparently i have some sort of crazy southern accent which i completely dont understand because i feel like i sound normal.

  • I do a little.  It depends on what I'm saying, but sometimes I'll get "New England vowels".

Also, if I get mad I start to sound like I'm from south Philly.  I swear I'm not, I think it's more in the expressions than the actual accent.

  • boston accent. I pahk my cah in hahvid yahd
  • I suppose I do, now. I've lived down south for the majority of my teen/adult life, and routinely say y'all.

  • Yep. H likes to point it out. I don't hear it... but everyone where we live speaks like I do.

Slightly Philly, mixed with some Pittsburgh and a little country thrown in for good measure.

This is what happens when you live in a country area between two big cities with distinctive accents.

  • I know I have a midwestern-Scandinavian accent. It's terrible when my mom's side of the family gets together. You'd swear you'd teleported to Sweden with all the yah's.
    Oh, FFS.
  • Boston accent. I try to reign it in, but it slips out. DH makes fun of it. He has no accent.

  • Yes I do, and sometimes I get embarrassed by it.

I have a really hardcore Staten Island accent.  Very VERY New York a la "Noo Yawk", more noticeable than a Brooklyn accent. When I travel, I usually get "Oof! you're from New York, huh?" (ugh. LOL)

So, most times when speaking I try to slow it down and concentrate on pronouncing my R's so as to avoid having to hear about how strong my accent is. It takes me like 5-6 tries to record work/personal voicemails so there's no trace of it, and I generally do like 2 takes when I leave a vm for people. (non friends)

    lol

Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker ...here is the deepest secret nobody knows (here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud and the sky of the sky of a tree called life; which grows higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide) and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart I carry your heart(I carry it in my heart)
  • I also thought I had a non-regional dialect, but another Bump mom informed me that I have a sweet Southern twang.  Boo.
  • No distinct accent, but I do say "wooder" for water.
  • I was born outside DC and lived there most of my life except a 3 year stint in Memphis where I picked up a slight accent. Now we're back in the DC area and my accent is gone but when I get mad and raise my voice a little it gets a little southern. Other than that, no accent.

  • Maybe someone can explain this to me:

I was raised in PA. Father is from NY. Mother is from WV.  I live currently in OH.  And on more than one occasion I've been told I sound like I am from Europe (however vast the possibilities that includes). I would have to say I do not have an accent. There seems no possible way. You'd think I would have no clue how to even speak English with all of that dialect being involved in my upbringing!

  • Would you say your accent resembles that of PA, NY or WV? A "european" accent covers a lot of ground but maybe something about your vowels makes you sound foreign...  What part of PA were you raised in?
