I actually totally get this and I'm in the (so far super successful, about halfway there!) process of losing a little under 50lbs.
I'm doing a keto diet that's also lowered calories and the forum I post to for support/recipe ideas/etc etc is usually half of the time just totally full of people complaining about it and there are many times I can't take it and just log off. Yeah, a chicken breast baked with some vinegar and sprinkled with some basil is not going to be as flavor-explosion tasty as a chicken breast fried in butter and stuffed with cheese and bacon. But there comes a point when you've made a decision and you just gotta ride with it.
And like LHC points out, being thin isn't everything. I ate horribly whenever I could growing up and was rail thin but had some pretty bad self-esteem issues and issues with food. Just because she's thin, now or in the future, doesn't necessarily make someone happy or mean they're okay with food.
Bulimics generally are at an average to above-average weight. I have struggled with bulimia for over a decade, and I've never been smaller than a size 8. I've always been told that this is typical of a person with bulimia.
Some people just hit the genetic lottery and can eat whatever they like without gaining weight. That doesn't make them healthy. I know plenty of skinny people who eat like sh!t and wreak havoc on their bodies.
My freshman year in college, I ate either cereal (always sugary) or a faux-mcdonalds bacon/egg biscuit for breakfast, french fries for lunch and french fries for dinner.
I lost 20lbs then, which was actually bad, b/c I was already pretty thin at the time.
Of course, now I'm not, so it did catch up with me, lol.

I ran a 5k 2 weeks ago. Another girl who works out with me at bootcamp was there. Said girl and I are the 2 heaviest people at the bootcamp. Said girl brought her 4 skinny friends with her, all of whom finished well after said girl and I did. Skinny /=/ fit, or healthy. I hope that makes you feel better!
Also, I work with a girl who is TINY. Not just thin, but also like 5'2" (which is almost worse, because someone who is 5'10" and skinny doesn't show 5 extra pounds the way a shorter person does). Her boyfriend routinely brings her McDonalds and Starbucks and they go out for lunch and dinner everyday. Meanwhile, I'm in the office eating black bean soup, carrots and hummus and trying to cry away the 100 pounds I have on this girl! I don't know if these people only eat half their meals or if they work it off somewhere else or what.

It is all about how much your legs and cardio can handle, right?
I should find it to post but I read an article on a metabolism study that the variance between any 2 given people can be as much as the difference between one running a 10k race every day and the other person not. That's not like the difference between an athlete and a sedentary person, but 2 people who eat roughly the same daily calorie load, move the same amount/have the same fitness level, etc etc. Basically there's still a lot we don't get about metabolism but it was definitely an eye opener.
It's a combo of what you mentioned, but it's a lot of genetics. I don't believe that there are many people that are genetically predisposed to be obese if they ate a reasonable diet and worked out, but not everyone is destined to be what most people think of as skinny.
I played soccer in college so I worked out hard 5-6 days per week. I also ate reasonably well. I'm 5'3" and I was still 135 and what most would consider thick and big boned. I'm never going to have a model's body. At one point I was determined to be thin, so I basically starved myself (would go to bed hungry every night) and did 1 hour of cardio on top of my soccer workouts. I got down to 130, not earth shattering skinny and I'm sure I never will be.
Yes, but no matter how much salad I eat, I'm still unhealthy since I'm obese, right?
Next you're probably going to tell me that Blessed's prescription diet of Starbucks, french fries, and beer is probably a bad idea. DAMMIT.
Some of my besties can eat whatever they want and stay stick thin. And its frustrating. However, one of them has been plagued by health issues (including cancer) so I'm pretty sure that they don't care they are thin, they'd rather have decent health.
It is, what it is....Although I completely understand the venting aspect of it. My H eats twice as much as I do (and then some), and stopped exercising a few years ago, while I try to get into the gym or with my trainer at least 4 times a week.
The other day at the grocery store, he stepped on the scale and mumbled something about "Oh, I lost three pounds. Cool."
Meanwhile, I'm trying to eat healthier and working out and I need almost a good month to get three pounds off. I restrained the urge from smacking him upside the head, but again...it is what it is.
Do you know what my husband did to me recently? He was going to the store to pick up something and I asked him to pick me up a snack. He brought home a whole fricken box of hostess cupcakes. FML and my waistline.
I find myself nodding to your posts a lot lately.
This reminds me of a book I read recently: Sugar Nation. It's partly one guy's personal story about addressing pre-diabetes through diet and exercise. In his former life, he was clued in on health info (wrote/edited for Men's Health), looked and felt fit enough (called himself "skinny fat") but ate crap regularly like sodas and candy bars. His own dad died in a sad state; riddled by serious complications from diabetes and he was not overweight - he seemed fine until the diabetes was pretty far along.
Being a fattie is an easy target, but rest assured that there are plenty of Skinny Fat people out there. There are better markers for health vs. disease than the often-deceptive appearance of leanness. I'm not so sure it's something to be happy about since we're all sharing the costs of poor nutrition and lack of activity
I'm thinking that having a fast metabolism isn't all that great either. Ok, it helps because we have obscene amounts of food so readily available 24/7, but outside of that it could mean that our bodies are lacking some efficiency in assimilating the food we eat. Burning through excess fuel at a fast pace might also age us more quickly. If our environment wasn't so messed up it would be beneficial to have a metabolism on the slower side and very efficient digestion to make the most of what we consume... as opposed to eating more just so that we can stuff our faces and poop more.
This is a good point.
During parts of my college years, I would starve most of the day and eat one meal that consisted of a McD's meal w/ fries, a slice of stuffed Sbarro pizza, huge deli sandwich, or an ice cream sundae, insert other unhealthy item here, etc. I totally lost weight since it was all I ate. At the high end it was probably 800-1000 calories per day.
Anything you can achieve through hard work, you could also just buy.
My mom used to eat like that in her 20s and 30s. She'd skip meals, eat crap instead and never worked out. She's now 60-something, morbidly obese and can't even take a walk b/c her knees hurt so much.
I think I'd rather do it my way instead. I may not be skinny, but I'm healthy and I don't think I'll ever be so heavy that I can't be active.
