Two Texas Rangers fans: douchey or not?
Texas Rangers game. A player tosses a ball into the stands, where it falls on the ground. A little boy excitedly reaches for it but an adult grabs it before the boy. Man hands it to his girlfriend/wife, who poses with the ball for pictures as the boy bursts into tears.
The television announcers tear into the couple for not giving the ball to the boy (who got another ball later on, after another player tossed one to him). The video went viral on YouTube, so millions of people are calling this couple mean, a$$holes, etc.
So, is this couple deserving of the hate?

Its not like its someone's 500th home run ball here - give it to the kid. And the photos and smiling while the kid is obviously sobbing is shitty.
Its not like the boyfriend even caught the ball - and I feel pretty confident the Ranger player wasn't tossing the ball to the grown-ass man.
I think it is douchey. Theyd get booed at a Twins game.

This. It's not like it was a special ball and they were going to cash in. Give the child the damn ball. They were douchey and deserved to be called out for it imo.
I was expecting the man to have seen the boy reaching for it, but it doesn't look like he even realized the boy was trying to get the ball too since the man was the one who was reaching for it first.
Not douchey at all. If a ball landed near me and I noticed a kid reaching for it at the same time, I'd let the kid grab it. If I caught it, it's mine. If I reached for it first and didn't notice anyone else reaching for it, it's mine. These things happen fast and often you don't realize who's around you trying to get the ball too. And hey, I've never caught a foul ball or a home run ball or a tossed-out ball - as an adult, I'd be excited to get one since I've been going to baseball games since I was a young kid. Lots of big baseball fans wait a long time to catch a ball. The kid will understand when he's older lol.

It isn't like he stole it from the kid. As a parent, I would probably tell my kid that the man caught it fair and square and that we will come to another game and maybe he will catch one then. I can understand the kid being upset but I think that is a situation that can be used as a teaching moment.
I can't watch videos at work so I can only go on what I heard on the radio this morning and what others are reporting.

wait, they were sitting right next to the kid? am i seeing that right?
if so then i think douchey. there's no way they didn't know what was going on if the kid was screaming right next to them.
Yes
With all the excitement I doubt they even looked around and saw the kid crying. It is dumb that they are receiving hate for this.
I don't care if they were next to the kid or not or heard him screaming or not - kids don't get what they want every time they scream for it, or just because they're kids. I agree with pp that if I had seen the kid reach for it, I'd have let him have it. But if I grabbed it first, it's mine. Maybe it's my first foul/caught ball, too! And I'm super excited cause I love the team so much and omg! Give it to a kid because he's screaming for it? F that.
He looks more like 2.
it wasn't a foul ball. it was tossed into the stands. that's why it's douchey. it's something customarily done to give to kids. at least, that's how the yankees roll.
They don't.
But then again, I'm firmly on Team Assh0le when it comes to these things.

<a href="http://www.thenest.com/?utm_source=ticker&utm_medium=HTML&utm_campaign=tickers" title="Home DThat's what other teams do as well - the toss to the kids. And maybe I've just been to too many Red Sox games with the tiny seats at Fenway, but there's no way the couple missed this kid crying.
Eh, sometimes they're tossed to kids, sometimes they're just tossed in the stands and lucky is the one who catches it (down here anyway). If he's 2-4, he probably barely even understands what's going on. I would probably be more likely to give it to a 12yr old, esp if I managed to look around and see him looking at me like his world just ended.
Well played, sir. Well played.
Can two-year-olds even understand "the man got to it first; maybe next time"?
Awww that poor little guy. Emotions are not so easy to control when you are that small. Everything seems like the end of the world. That lady seems pretty pleased with herself though!
So, because a 2 year old can't understand he should just be given what he wants?
They don't. The couple should have kept the ball. They should of have also turned around and told the boy there is not Santa or Easter Bunny why they were at it.
Give me a fuuucking break.
Have I entered the Twilight Zone here?
Since when do we have to give a crying kid anything he wants? The video shows to me that it was not snatched out of the kid's hand, the man didn't push the kid away to get the ball, the man wasn't laughing to the kid's face, etc.
I guess if I ever finally catch a ball at a baseball game, since I'm a grownup now I would be a douchebag if I keep it. Good to know.
And with that, I have to post and run but will certainly be back to this weird thread later.
