What is your worst nightmare?

(Not, like, your kids dying...think more unrealistically).

You know how James Cameron went down in the little one man submarine to the deepest depths of the ocean?

That's mine.

When H told me about it a few weeks ago I got all sweaty and weird, and then I ended up having nightmares about it.

The closed in space, how dark it would be, the weight of all that water above me, all the unknown sea creatures (and the known ones!  Fuuuvuuck).  Ugh.  Everything about it scares the pants right off me.  I can literally think of nothing scarier.

And now also, the sinkholes.  Holy fuuvucking god.  No.  Just...no.

Re: What is your worst nightmare?

  • Space.  Space freaks me the f*ck out.

Also, I had a nightmare once that I started losing memories, one by one; they were being stolen by someone who slowly started to become me, and in the end I was standing outside my own house watching the girl who had become me through the window.

It was the scariest dream I've ever had, ever.

  • yeah, anything underwater!  ACK!  Lucy got disney oceans for her birthday last year, I nearly died.  And plane crashes.

PS- I like you a lot, you don't make me feel bad, I feel bad that I made you feel bad!

  • Dying in a plane crash.

I travel a lot.  I used to be a nervous flyer, but not so much anymore.  But I can't imagine what it must feel like to see the groound rushing up at you and you know there's no hope, while the passengers are screaming and it's utter chaos inside the plane itself.

    SHlT.

But, this sounds like a good movie. I'd watch it.

  • Anything to do with fire. My H jokes that I was Joan of Arc in a former life bc I can conceive of a million possibilities in which a fire could occur at any given time. It's probably not healthy.
  • I have a recurring nightmare that I make some calculation error at work that results in the moon moving much closer to the earth and completely f*cking the tides.  Totally unrealistic, considering that my work is on microbial evolution, but it freaks me out.
    image
  • Dental work and falling/fear of heights.
  • burning alive or drowning (specifically, going over a bridge in my car.) i've always been such a strong swimmer and the thought of being trapped and helpless underwater is terrifying.

eta: also, since someone else said it first, ghosts. if i'm home alone i try not to even let the thought enter my mind, b/c i feel like that will make it come true. i'm scared of something pulling me out of bed like in paranormal activity. if h is home and it's on my mind i will intertwine my legs w/ his. i'm kind of nuts.

  • Being trapped in a car underwater. Whenever I see that in a movie or TV, I get the collywobbles.

Every time I drive over a bridge, I start planning what I'd do to get out if suddenly the bridge collapsed/my car careened off. And don't even get me started on how panicky it makes me to think about my kids being in the car with me.

  • I have a fear of falling, and it's getting worse as I get older so planes trips are becoming not very fun for me whenever there is turbulence. On our way home from St. Lucia in 2010 the plane dipped (severely to me) in the rear (it wasn't actually that bad but because of where we were sitting it seemed awful) and I started crying. It just feels like the bottom is going to fall out.

Like flexiblebride said, to know it's coming and have nothing you can do, and the chaos all around you. I still travel all the time, but I have a feeling I will have to take anti-anxiety meds in the near future. Especially once I have kids.

  • Dying in a plane crash

being pushed by a psycho in front of the metro (variations include this happening to my kids)

being separated from my kids in the metro (like, they are still inside when the doors close and I'm outside).  We have never taken the metro together, but I obsess about this.

someone sneaking behind my back to stab me.  As a result, I always have to sit with my back facing the wall

  • Being pulled underwater by some unseen hand that grabs my foot and drags me to the bottom of the ocean, where I thrash around and drown.

and having an overpass collapse on my car while traveling underneath it.

    and plane crashes.

I'm thinking I died by drowning in a past life because I hate even looking at pictures of big deep scary pools of water.

I'm okay swimming in natural lakes though...weird.

I still remember being TERRIFIED to walk on the catwalk over a big scary tank of water at the water treatment plant when we went there in 3rd grade.  TERRRRRRRIFIED.  It was SO SO SO SCARY.

This would make a really awesome book and / or movie.

  • apparently, tornadoes. They are the subject of my most frequent actual nightmares.

But as far as when I'm awake, probably  dying in a plane crash or my house burning down with my pets inside.

OMG.  The deepest part of this pool is deeper than you're even allowed to dive with a standard scuba diving license.

I have scuba dived and enjoyed it.  But that is scary to think about.

  • Clowns.  For as long as I can remember.

Late last year, I had a random encounter with a clown at work.  He was just trying to drop something off to his wife who also worked there, on his way to a kids party at a school nearby.  He tried to ask me for directions to her office and when I turned and saw him,  I literally gasped for air and forgot to let it out.  I started getting woozy and the poor guy had to help me as I slid to the floor.  Fortunately, he had a sense of humor about it and told me that I wasn't the first person to have a similiar reaction.

That night, I had a nightmare that there was a clown wearing a gas mask standing outside of my bedroom window, staring in at me and would occasionally tap the window and give me a taunting wave.

    Fuckingclowns.

Really?  Huh.  Thinking about scuba-ing in the wide open ocean doesn't bug me but something about this pool DOES.

I think it spooks me because it's so long and straight and uniformly shaped with a freaking LADDER coming up out of it.  But when you get to the top of the ladder you're still underwater.  The whole thing just gives me shivers.

I don't think I could go in the ROOM where the pool is because I would KNOW it's down there.  The dark shadow in the water.......  *shudder*

OMG. this is why i do not go into the ocean. all the fish, octopus, crabs...sealife is my worst nightmare.

    and ghosts.

and extreme weather. i am terrified of all the possible extreme storms/natural disasters. is there a place i can move that does not have tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, etc?

(i realize i screwed myself on that last one, living on the coast of FL)

  • Someone crawling around in my house. I don't know how to explain that haha but some of my worst nightmares involved me turning around to find someone slowly crawling towards me. Omg scares the shiit out of me.

Another one that I freak myself out with is driving on a dark tree-lined road (like the one my parents live on) and someone standing at the edge of the road as I pass, or someone walking in front of my car and making me swerve then coming to get me!

Oh and one more- I always have this fear that someone is watching me through a dark window or something. More spooky than a "worst nightmare" but anyway.

  • I've had the same nightmare a bunch and I wake up sweaty and freaked out from having a dream that I go over a cliff and just keep falling into darkness.

ack! now I'm all creeped out. One time H and I saw this documentary about these people  who walk around on all fours, and for awhile after that he kept doing it just to freak me out. assshole.

    eta: omgodaaaaahhhhh

NM, these are mine now.  Sh*t!

  • Caving.  Like, spelunking through really tight squeezes.  Seeing pictures of people doing it make it difficult to breathe.  I almost had a panic attack once reading about some underwater caves in South America that people SCUBA dive through.  Don't even get me started on those Chilean miners.

  • I have recurring nightmares about bombs and spies and not being able to hide.  And then I have to pretend I'm "one of them" just in order to live!

Also... i have nightmares about calling 911 and they can't hear me!!!!!!

  • Okay, I am certain that a long-haired Asian girl is going to come crawling around the corner going, 'Ahhh-hhhhh-hhh.' like the chick in The Grudge.

  • Has anyone seen the movie "When a Stranger Calls"? That's seriously been my fear since I started baby-sitting at 12. I was always scared that I'd answer the phone and there would be someone watching me outside or someone in the house.

  • It just depends on the day.  We were walking along a river last weekend and I was worried about 1) either aliens or a plane crashing into the bridge above us and crushing us or 2) the rickety bridge we walked over falling out from under us.

I don't have one major nightmare.
