Poll: How far away from your immediate family do you live?

I ask because my sister and her fiance just looked at a house around the corner from us.  My parents live 10 minutes away so everyone is nice and close!

How far away from your immediate family do you live?

Re: Poll: How far away from your immediate family do you live?

  • I'm 15 minutes from my mom (same town) DH's parents are on the other side of San Francisco (so it can be between 45 minutes to 2.5 hours depending on bridge and rush hour traffic). My brother is cross country.

We grew up with an ocean between us and all relatives so this is new to me :-)

  • about 30-40 minutes north

  • 8 hours.

Will be 3 hours away in about 2 months.

About a 3 hour plane ride from my parents and most of my family and a 2 hour plane ride from DH's parents.

  • My parents and sister are about an hour and a half south.

H's parents are about an hour and 45 min north. His brother lives 5 miles away.

I wish we were closer to my parents but I'm glad to be near his brother

  • 15 min from my parents, 30 minutes from my brother.  We live halfway across the country from DHs family.  My family is kind of suffocating, I need more space.

  • My immediate family all still lives together. They live 15 minutes away.  H's family lives in SC.  16 hours away...until June.  When MIL will live in the next room.

  • H's parent are about 15 minutes away, mine are 40ish.
  • 12 hour drive / two hour flight. They all live in the same town.

I enjoy the distance 99% of the time.

  • 350 miles from mine. About 20 miles from most of H's.
  • 5 min from MIL that we never see.  She did show up last week and told us she is leaving her FI and going back up north.

My family is about an hour and fifteen minutes away.  I wish we lived much closer to them and will be looking forward to my MIL not randomly showing up once every few months without calling first.

    2 hours from my mother

Either 45 minutes or 16 hours away from MIL and FIL, depending on what time of year

10 minutes from two of my SILs

About 30 minutes from one of my SILs

About 25 minutes from my BIL

Literally CONTINENTS away from my last SIL.  Blissful continents.

  • Hahahaha... we're not close to anyone.

Are we talking by car or by plane? I did by car, since plane can get complicated when we're talking about driving to and from the airport (in some cases to places where the airport is pretty far away)

7 hours and 45 minutes from my dad and stepmom

19 hours and 1 minute from MIL and step FIL

25 hours from mom and stepdad

3 days and 3 hours from FIL and stepmom

My sister will win here soon, though with 26+ hours by plane.  Vehicle time cannot be calculated.

2 miles from one sil, 4 miles from my mil/fil, 5 miles from my mom, 10 miles from my brother.
  • about a thousand miles. but hopefully that will change soon.

  • We're 2-3 minutes from my dad and stepmom, 10 minutes from my stepbrother/sil and 15-20 from my mom - very close! H's family is 2 plane rides away.

  • My parents--one hour or a tad more.

DH's parents--a twelve-hour drive.  We've never flown, so...but apparently it's roundabout to fly and takes a long time too.

  • about 5-10 minutes from my sister and 15 from my parents.
  • Same ZIP code as Both sets of parents, 30 minutes from SIL, 20 hours from bil.
  • I have extended family that live across the street, down the road, around the corner, 10 minutes driving, etc.  My parents and a sister live far away from me.

  • My immediate family is all in the same town and I wouldn't have it any other way. My parents live 30 minutes away. So do my grandparents. Most of my aunts and uncles and cousins live in town, too. It's nice. (I don't have siblings)

I honestly don't see how anyone (especially w/ kids) could live in a town with no family anywhere nearby. That is really depressing.

  • Fifteen minute drive from my parents and sister in HS. Forty five minute drive from my brother and his family. Long plane ride from my other sister, and about a four hour drive from husband's family. It works well. My family gives us lots of space and his likely wouldn't, so they're good distances.

yeah, there she was ... like disco lemonade ...
  • Can walk to their house.. its about a mile by car or 15 minutes walking. They live across a busy street though so my boys have just started being able to ride their bikes over there... they are 11 and 12
  • 3,000 miles.  4 hours by air.

We don't find it depressing at all.

Granted, my aunt and uncle do live fairly nearby, but we see them maybe two or three times a year and they're more like friends than relatives.
