Poll: How far away from your immediate family do you live?

Re: Poll: How far away from your immediate family do you live?

  • Closer than I have been in a long time - about a 5 hour drive to my brother, add another 3 to my parents. My sister is ~4 hour flight, H's parents are a 10 hour flight.  It's not my favorite, but as you can see from those numbers, we're never going to be close to everyone so we might as well live where it makes us happy.
  • About an hour drive to my parents and 4 hour drive to my brother and his gf. I wish we were closer.

3 hour plane ride to MIL/SFIL, FIL, and both BILs. SSILs all longer plane rides. Not heartbroken about any of this.

4 hour plane ride to most of my extended family. Wish we were closer to them, too.

My immediate family is all in the same town and I wouldn't have it any other way. My parents live 30 minutes away. So do my grandparents. Most of my aunts and uncles and cousins live in town, too. It's nice. (I don't have siblings)

I honestly don't see how anyone (especially w/ kids) could live in a town with no family anywhere nearby. That is really depressing.

Its sad to me that my kid's isn't close to her Grandma or cousins, even though we see them enough that she knows her they are. We're about 8 hours away driving. My H's  sister also lives in the area. His brother lives in CA.

In the end, we couldn't have the kind of life that we wanted there. We are truly living our dream here and that's also important for G.

  • Couple blocks from my sister. Half hour from my mom. It's surprisingly nice living so close to my sister but we like each other.

  • We live 10 minutes from my parents and 15 mins from my in laws. One sister just bought a house about an hour away, that's far for us. My baby sister lives at home still. I love being close to them.
  • About 2 miles from my parents and brother, 30 from H's family.

  • My sister is 4.5-5 hours away. My parents are 6.5-7 hours.

H has a brother and sis in law within a mile of us, as well as a sister in town and a brother moving back to town in May. He is from Kenya and his parents are still back there.

  • All of my family lives in the same town 100 miles away. Before I was married, I lived within walking distance of my parents and grandma.

DH's family lives between 5 and 15 miles away.

We have 4 siblings that go to school/live 30 miles away.

One brother is 45 miles away.

The last brother is 50 miles away.

  • About 11 hours.  Blue, it's hard.  I like doing our own thing, and experiencing different things, but you can't just have people over for dinner.

However, I don't think we'll ever move back, just laterally, or further south.  I do not miss the cripplingly cold winters.  I don't plan on ever living anywhere that experiences those again.

  • about 8 hours in the car (depending on traffic out of NYC)

    an hour away by airplane

  • an hour and fifteen minutes from my parents, hour and thirty from my brother.

just at two hours from H's parents, and 10 minutes from his brother.

these distances work well for us. H's parents do plan to move here w/in the next 5 years and that makes me a little twitchy.

  • My parents and siblings, and DH's siblings (both his parents are deceased) all live no more than 20 minutes away from us.

    Our children all live away.

Daughter #1 lives in AZ. Daughter #2 lives about 3 hrs away. Dtr #3 lives 30 minutes. SS#1 lives in FL. SS#2 lives 3 hrs away.  Along wit hall the grandchildren. That's a bummer.

  • We are about 45 min north of my parents and about 25 min away from my sister.  DH's younger sister is about 30 minutes and his older sister and parents are in SW MN, about a 3 hour drive.
