Vow-BQ - why do we hate them?

I think because the way a lot of people do them is more appropriate for a 4th of July picnic than a wedding.  No one wants to get all dressed up to go sit on a plastic lawnchair with a paper plate full of mediocre BBQ balanced precariously on their knees and one tiny paper napkin to clean up the inevitable mess.  It is possible to do it well, but most people don't.

Edit: also, because BBQ offers nothing for vegetarians

OMG this! It makes me twitchy.

We hate them because they're not fun and the food sucks.

Do you ever have fun at weddings?  I guess I really don't.  Unless it's my super close best friend or family member I don't get excited.

Of course I've only been to one open bar wedding.  Maybe if they were all open bar I'd change my mind.Stick out tongue

My concern here is that it sounds like you have decided that it won't be fun and you are the host. If you don't want to do it then think of another idea you can both live with. Maybe a small marriage ceremony followed by a family reunion. Or embrace the idea and throw the kind of party you would enjoy attending I a way that meets your budget. For me music, close friend and drinks almost always equals fun.

I think the beginning of the  vow b q hatred was when someone posted about having a vow renewal for their one year anniversary in the park with BBQ and was all butt hurt because her in laws would not reschedule a vacation they'd planned in order to make it. Since it was such a sacred thing and all. I don't hate backyard weddings but this was different.

I was really into the original private wedding but I can totally understand why FI wants to involve his (very) close extended family.  Especially after FIL passing.  I'm just not into all the "work" required!  Maybe I should hire a planner...

I wouldn't mind going to one of these as long as it wasn't in the Houston-area during the summertime.

Free food and I'm probably going, as long as it isn't too much work for me.

I actually shot an outdoor wedding the first week of August a couple years ago.  It was at 5pm.  Let me tell you how appreciative I was on the ac in my car after that.  And the guys were in full tuxedos and the bride wore a huge dress.

  • i love vow-b-cues.  i wish i had had the nuts to have one.  we had a morning wedding, so after the reception everybody kind of landed at my parents house and i was thinking, "dude, we should have just done this.  this is so much more fun."
