  • High schoolers SHOULD use birth control. The Bible CAN be used to defend slavery. People DO use the Bible to justify bigotry towards gays. And a high schooler who freaks out about someone questioning the Bible and walks out of a conference probably is a pansy ass.

    1.  This entire situation is the fault of the school for not doing at least a preliminary freaking check into who Dan Savage is and the nature of his speech and general tone.  It feels disingenuous and ridiculous to hire someone to give a key note speech who is known for blunt talk about sexual orientation and pointed opinions and then complain when he exhibits the very characteristics for which he is most well-known.  It's like hiring Ann Coulter to speak at a Democratic rally and then getting all upset when she calls liberals morons.

To be fair, this was not at a school, it was at a national conference. And the conference organizers released a statement supporting Dan Savage's speech:

[T]he event's organizers have jumped to Savage's defense, saying they "appreciate the level of thoughtfulness and deliberation" that went into the speech. "Some audience members who felt hurt by his words and tone decided to leave in the middle of his speech, and to this, we want to make our point very clear: While as a journalist it?s important to be able to listen to speech that offends you, these students and advisers had simply reached their tolerance level for what they were willing to hear," the National Scholastic Press Association was quoted as saying in a statement.

  • Bullying and bashing of ANYONE is wrong and shouldn't be tolerated.  Isn't it hypocritical to teach kids that it's wrong to verbally assault someone for their sexual orientation (as an example) yet it's okay to do so to someone who peacefully/quietly doesn't support gay marriage or abortion or any socially conservative view?

People have their opinions for their own reasons.  It upsets me seeing picketers out chanting that choosing to have an abortion is "killing your baby" and that gay marriage shouldn't be legal but at the end of the day they have the right to do so, whether it's for religious reasons or something else.  I won't stand for blatant ignorance ("gay people choose to be gay") discussed in my presence and have spoken up about that at a dinner table but it's not my place to ream them out about it.

I guess my whole point is, doesn't basic human psychology support the idea that people respond much better when they're approached respectfully vs. berating them about everything they've believed for so many years?

In response "let's agree to disagree" that's really all people can do.  It's no ones place to force someone to think a certain way, it's not even possible if they wanted to.

The school should still have done some research into the speakers they were sending their kids to see.

I have even less sympathy now knowing that this wasn't at a particular school.

Husbands should be like Kleenex: Soft, strong, and disposable.
  • Also, people start leaving immediately.  Like they hear "bible" and are like OMG, he can't say a word about the BIBLE!!!!

And nothing he said, other than the "pansyass" comment was even that inflammatory.  Pointing out that people pick and choose what kinds of crazy crap to follow is not inflammatory.

If people, especially teens, are not taught to actively criticize their religion, their political party, and people in other leadership roles nothing will ever change for the better.  Blindly following doctrine has lead to some of the world's biggest tragedies and should have taught us that questioning the status quo is the only way to prevent things like Nazi Germany from happening again.  (And yeah, I just went to Hitler.)

i think if you want to be a journalist, you should get used to listening to things you don't like to hear.

    Yes.

I was a high school journalist, who went on to be a college journalist who then made journalism my career for more than 10 years. At any point along the way, I would have peed my pants with happiness to be hanging with Dan Savage.

If those kids want to cry, they should consider the sorry state of journalism in general, which is due in large part to the fact that people would rather watch out-of-context video clips, read blogs that agree with their world view and consume "infotainment" than spend any length of time considering the gray in the world, the complexities of race, gender and economic inequalities, or for that matter, any "bad" news that isn't wildly sexed up or doesn't come with a slide show.

The only thing I question about choosing Dan Savage as a speaker is that he has a clear agenda and he's not an unbiased journalist. Lots of kids want to be columnists or entertainment writers though, so I can see why the organizers might have thought it was a good fit.
