What Obama needs to do this week
I believe that he needs to convince voters that they should stay the course and not go back to the Bush policies. He needs to make Romney a proxy for Bush. He can't really run on what he HAS done for the most part, so he needs to try the "it could be worse, they started it" argument.

It seems to me like this race is going to be very close to the ones in 2000 and 2004. In 2004, Ohio decided it all. That could happen again. In 2000, everything was split about 50-50: Senate, the presidency... right now, the Senate is looking like it will be 50-50 or 51-49 R.
There's a path for Romney without Ohio, but it's less likely. I think the most likely is getting Iowa and Colorado. There's a scenario I tried on the electoral map that had Romney with 270. Another was 274.

I post on other threads too and not always negatively. I started a thread about his personality because I'm truly baffled that he is seen as likeable. To each his/her own. He seems very snooty and angry at times which is why I find it perplexing.

I thought my initial post made perfect sense and went along with what pundits always ask about each night of a convention or a convention overall---what does the candidate need to do? What purpose will his speech serve?

I think Mitt Romney is John Kerry in a red tie. He's rich and out of touch with the middle class. He's too robotic and doesn't have a concrete plan to change anything except lower taxes on the rich. Unless there's a real social issue on the ballot (like gay marriage in 2004)., voter turn out will be low and they'll go with Obama instead of rocking boat with someone new.
