politics will come up. I noticed that the people who do not

like Obama will express it in almost a whisper, through

clenched teeth. The same way bigots will make a horribly

racist remark to me, like we all belong to what I call The

Secret White People's Club. It made me think about the

    hatred for Obama.

That's why I posted this. And I was damned curious to see

    the comments.

IMO people whisper because most people who like Obama seem to almost idolize him. I have never seen people become so defensive over a president who has done very little. I whisper around my family too because God-forbid you say anything negative about HIM! They go apeshit!

Believe what you want but his record and arrogant attitude sucks!!! I find black men very attractive and would not rule out dating a black man. I also have black friends. Personally, I am far from racist!!!

    Yea, I know. Classic.

cats - i think "we" whisper because we don't want to offend people.  we have enough sense that we don't want to start a fight and start name calling people just because they don't have the same beliefs as us.  BUT those that do love obama are usually the ones that start arguments, loudly, won't give up and will be really rude to us.  i have had to block people on Facebook for being extremely rude to me and calling me names just because I don't idolize the same person as they do.  forgive me for having my own thoughts

To be fair this your personal opinion. My personal opinion is that President Obama has done quite a lot for our country and my family. My son can not be kicked off our insurance, my 3 siblings in college can stay on our parents insurance, and my cousin can finally post pictures of her and her wife on FB without fear of her getting kicked out of the military.  These are some of MANY in my opinion that he done.

Agreed. And not everybody who is voting for Obama idolizes him. There are plenty of people who just think Romney is absolutely terrible. I'm not a Democrat. Honestly if Jon Huntsman were the Republican candidate I might have a tougher choice at the polls. Though there are still some views of his that I don't agree with. I'm just saying, it's unfair to say that just because someone is an Obama supporter they are some sort of brainwashed sheep. And also, if you're going to try to say it about Dems, you need to accept the fact that there are people like this on either side. I know plenty of people voting Republican just bc that's what their parents are doing. I know because I used to be like that too. That stopped once I started thinking for myself and really understanding my own beliefs.

Point: cats, you can stop using that argument now, since it's one of 5 things you ever say on this board.

I, too, would like accolades on not following in my parents footsteps and forwarding e-mails they swear were sent by Jay Leno declaring Bush was an awesome prez.

    Yes, that actually happened.

My parent's don't vote or follow politics at all.  Never have, never will.  So I am expecting a really shiny trophy for actually following politics!   Think we can make that happen?

  • Just because Obama didn't show his birth certificate to the press and American public doesn't mean nobody saw it.  How exactly do you think they vet nominees and candidates?  This is one of the most important positions in the world, you really think the Democratic Party just accepts a photo ID and calls it a day?

  • imageRustyBelle:

I believe it is because of his background which raised the questions. Combined with the fact that he refused to release his birth certificate. It's not because of his race. Now, do I think you can become president without proving you were born here? No. But, I do think that he had an opportunity to end all doubt by just showing the American people what they were asking for and he chose not to.

It's the same as everyone going after Romney for his tax returns. Do they only want to see them because he's white? No.

It's because releasing your tax returns is standard practice for every presidential candidate for the last 30 years, including Romney's own father.

I am not aware of any presidential candidate ever having his birth certificate demanded and his citizenship questioned over and over to the point where nothing short of a videotape of the actual birth will suffice as proof.

Think flip side of the coin.  The love many people have for Obama, seems to me not to be related to his record in office, nor any experience because he came into office with really none whatsoever.  Much of it was/is racially motivated.

Most people would never admit that - a few have to me. Go ahead, discuss.

You think that people love Obama just because he is black, not because of anything else in his personality or record or experience?

If this is true, why weren't people fawning all over Herman Cain, who is arguably blacker than Obama?

I agree that it is totally possible and likely that a lot of the initial hype surrounding the Obama campaign four years ago, for some (not all) people, may have been related to the idea of America seeing its first black president. I don't see what's wrong with that. It's the same as getting behind Hillary or Palin for the sake of seeing a female president or V.P.  I don't see how getting excited about progress in equality in our government is something to criticize.

I agree that some people probably got more excited about Obama than they otherwise would have because of the historic value of his being the first black president (likewise with Sarah Palin or Hillary Clinton). But I think it's ridiculous to say that "people only voted for him because he's black!! They don't care about anything else!" when there are other black candidates (blacker, even!) that they're not interested in. If "black" was the sole reason people were supporting him, then they'd be flocking to Herman Cain. They didn't. So clearly there was something ELSE about Obama that they liked besides his race.

Yeah - I don't think anyone here said what you've quoted. Did Obama gather a good number of votes in his first election due to the color of his skin?  Of course he did!  You live under a rock if you don't realize that.  The question then becomes...are those people going to support him in a second election knowing what they know now?  After broken promises, after fours years of very little progress?  We'll see.
