I am so glad to hear that this heart-breaking story has enlightened you.  I say that sincerely.

thanks for letting me know it was not snarky....its always hard to tell on forums.  I've had a lot of death in my family the last 5 years so I couldn't even imagine this.

Sometimes it takes some heartbreak, or a complete awakening to change your views.  It certainly did with me.  I hope that you remember this couple, and the thousands like them, if marriage equality comes to your state's ballot.  :)

Yes to all of this. :)  I understand when you have believed one way for so long that it is hard to change. But at the end of the day, you need to remember these are mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, being treated like they are less than human simply because of their sexual orientation and they don't deserve that.

  • I think I understand where vlagrl29 is coming from.  As a Christian, I understand the biblical definition of marriage and traditionally marriage has been a religious institution.  However, I don't want to see anybody who has made a commitment to a relationship disenfranchised or marginalized.

I am kinda Libertarian minded in that, I want to be afforded the freedom to live my life as I see fit and I feel others should have that same freedom.

vlagrl29, please correct me if I am misinterpreting you but I believe you were saying that you believe marriage is between a man a woman but that you recognize a gay person's right to commit their live to another, perhaps in a civil union?

  • Libertarian here.  I call myself the Lone Libertarian because I don't know any others.

omg Yes! also I just thought of another question.  since the law has been changed on the issue regarding visitation rights in the final moments of life, can't other laws change without them legally being able to get married.  I understand the tax stuff can't, but what about other things?

Sure, they can probably chip away and allow them the same rights here and there but it's still oppressing an entire group of human beings. And if they're going to continue to leave it up to the states, then only certain pockets of the population will be eligible for the same rights and benefits.

I mean, if you want traditional marriage, then let's just go back to it being a business deal where the wife is subservient to the husband. That's how it used to be. That's how it was in the Bible. Marrying for love didn't come until much later.

  • The second that a marriage between a man/man or woman/woman differs from a marriage between a man/woman is the second you're imposing your religious beliefs.  I don't care if they have exactly the same set of rights, if you call same-sex marriage anything short of marriage because of your religion then you're injecting religion into our law and it's wrong.  I don't care what your God considers marriage, it should not affect what my country considers marriage in any way shape or form.
