Right.  This is what I don't understand about the conservative platform.  It just doesn't make sense if they care so much about fiscal issues and small government to just let people be, smoke their weed and make some profit of it.  No big deal.

I'm usually a lurker but to me, this election parallels what happened in 2004 with Bush vs. Kerry. There were a lot of people, especially in my ultra-blue state, who were really, really angry with Bush and couldn't understand how anyone could vote for him; they still think he was the worst thing to happen to our country. But he greatly appealed to his base and he spoke to many, many conservatives. Similarly, people on the left see Obama as some sort of savior. He's the first president to really stick his neck out for gay marriage, for racial equality, for women. Clinton supported those things but he took a more populist approach. (He also understood Southerners the way Obama doesn't.)

Romney's major failing was that no one really liked him. Plenty of people were voting AGAINST Obama, but was anyone really voting FOR Romney? Besides the ultra-rich and maybe Mormoms, was there anyone out there who thought Romney spoke to them, who idolized him the way young people and minorities idolize Obama? I think even conservatives were ehh about him (though they may have liked Ryan) and his own state wanted nothing to do with him. You can't win an election without that kind of fire.

That's why Kerry lost and why Romney lost. Or at least that's my theory ...
