Reading outside of your normal Genre

What is the one book that you read outside of your normal Genre and loved!?!? I tend to stick to my normal genre and normally only go outside if a book is highly recommended or it is for Book Club.

So what is your normal genre, what book did you read (& the genre) and why did you read it?

Re: Reading outside of your normal Genre

  • I usually read realistic stuff and stay far away from fantasy...especially fantasy that involves "creatures." But I LOVED Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor.

  • Historical fiction was SO not my bread and butter, but I loved Outlander.  It opened me up to the genre and now I read it regularly.  My go to gengre is Paranormal/Urban Fantasy.

  • My normal Genre is Romance/Chick Lit/ YA and for book club a while back we read Partials by Dan Wells it's a SciFi which I always thought I hated, I mean I'm not going to run out and start reading ton's of SciFi but I LOVED this book!

I was never into History but I have to say I have read quite a bit of Historical Fiction and I actually really enjoy it, as long as it is not a book overloaded with crazy amounts of historical facts then I enjoy them!

  • I can't really say that I have a 'genre'.  I read pretty much anything I can.I try to be all over the map with my reading because I feel like I might be missing out on that "epic" book if I didn't open my mind to everything.

  • I wasn't a fan of historical non-fiction but I read "unbroken" and loved it! Gave it 5 stars and would re-read it again in a heart beat.

Same here. I read all sorts of stuff, my motto is: if you hand me a book I will read it.

Hmmm wish I could do this...maybe one day ;-) I guess if the book has a nice cover, not really paying much mind to the genre and it seems somewhat interesting I could pick up books from other genres :-)

  • I was not into Paranormal Romance at all until I picked up BDB thanks to all the recs on here. I actually used to turn up my nose at my IRL friends who were reading it. Now I am hooked! They love giving me a hard time about it.

I don't really know if I have just one go-to genre. I tend to read Young Adult, Paranormal/ Fantasy, and lately New Adult.

  • Before this board I would have adamantly opposed anyone who told me I'd be into fantasy, especially high fantasy. And now I've read and loved Game of Thrones and Name of the Wind.

Actually, DH is a super nerd and VERY into fantasy (it's the only genre he reads). We had this exchange yesterday:

DH: It's weird, I had never heard of Pat Rothfuss until you told me about him and then suddenly he shows up on Tabletop and on a podcasted D&D game with the Penny Arcade guys.
Me: haha. you'd like his books
DH: turns out he's a pretty funny dude.
Me: i've just read the one but i'll probably read the 2nd in the next month or two.
    yeah. he's your people.

  • I don't know that I have a genre that I stick to.  I will say I really enjoyed A Constellation of Vital Phenomena by Anthony Marra and it's not the type of book I usually pick up.  It was just really beautifully written and gave me a lot to think about.

I tend to read everything. I used to say anything but horro/scary books. But i have read IT and a couple of other SK books and loved them. However i have to read them during daylight hours with other people around.
  • I read just about anything, but I've never really felt drawn to non-fiction history. However, I really enjoyed Longitude.

I'm not if it counts as a genre, but I also don't like "coming of age" tales. I've never read one I really loved.

  • I usually read mystery/thriller type stuff, but I absolutely loved The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak. It was my first YA "experience" and I was pleasantly surprised by its depth.

  • Same here with high fantasy.  I like fantasy if it's YA, but never thought I would like a book like The Name of the Wind.  Well, I was wrong.

  • I am a solid women's fiction/romance/chick lit reader. Several people recommended to me the Black Dagger Brotherhood, even though I am SO NOT into vampires. Well, guess what? It turns out I am a little bit into vampires.

  • I also don't really have a genre but I didn't think I would be into zombie books. I read World War Z and liked it enough that I wouldn't mind reading more in the zombie genre.

  • The only genre I shy away from is contemporary women's lit/chick lit, unless it's a romance.  I tend to hate the women in them.  One I read that I did really like though - The Little Lady Agency
