I love the short haircut!  I just donated my hair again for the 5th time a few months ago, it's such a great cause.

Speaking of causes based on books, I forget which book it was now but when I was a kid I read about a kid with leukemia who received a bone marrow transplant.  I always remembered the story, so when someone posted on TK about the Be the Match, which is a bone marrow registry, I immediately went to their site to register. (and now I'm going to drive myself crazy trying to remember that book....)
  • You look great!  I donate to locks of love about every two years.  I never can get it that long though!

(sidenote - I'm glad that you didn't use Locks of Love [they might just be a US thing].  I donated to them several years ago BEFORE i researched them & discovered that most of the hair donated isn't used for wigs!  :-/ )

I used to donate to them, but I took really good care of my hair, so I wanted the best chance of it being used. Also, I wanted to support a smaller organization.

@shellmh They sell most of it to cover their operating costs, but most organizations do. The wig production itself is actually very expensive, and most organizations don't receive enough financial donations to cover the costs outright. So they have to sell some of the hair to get the money.

Locks of Love receives thousands and thousands of donations, and many are unusable, so they spend a lot of overhead just sorting through the hair they receive. I know they've gotten a lot of negative press recently, but in reality, their operating costs have just grown so high that they need to spend more money supporting the organization and thus have to sell more hair to recoup the cost.

FYI - If you have damaged, short, or treated hair, but would still like to donate, these organizations would love financial donations, because that's where they're really hurting. It doesn't matter how many people donate usable hair if they can't afford to produce the wig!

Interesting. Who do they sell the hair to? Another organization that makes wigs? I have heard that it is very expensive to make the wigs and that it takes donations (of hair) from many people just to make one, short wig.

I've read that they sell it to commercial wig manufacturers.
