Desert Island Top Five Books

DH made me answer this question last night while we were driving home from dinner.  His caveat was you can include 1 series plus 4 stand alone books that would be the only books you could read for the rest of your life.

These were my choices:

1. Harry Potter series (obvs..)
2. The Giver by Lois Lowry
3. One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
4. The Norton Anthology of Modern Poetry
5. Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close - Jonathan Safran Foer

I think this list would cover me for almost any mood I could be in.  I told him the question was unfair but whatevs.  Anyone else wanna play?

Outlander. It's longer. You are going to need some books that are time killers.

But I love HP just as much because of the whole good vs. evil scenario that you just don't get in Outlander.  And books 4-7 are approximately the same size as the Outlander books.

Unless there's electricity on this island.  Then I'll listen to HP and read Outlander.

    It's slippery as waterweed.
  • I'm a total series whore, so my 5-books list will turn into a 25+ books list, which means I'm going to need a bookshelf on my island.

I should probably just get stranded in a library.

  • At first I thought I'd actually have a really, REALLY hard time choosing between the Outlander series and the Little House series, because Outlander is so long and amazing and has lots of botanical references and would help me keep my sanity...but if you go back and look the Little House series is basically an instruction manual for building houses and traps and living off the land. But then I came to my senses and realized I wouldn't WANT to live off the land. I'd want to die happy on this stupid island. So Jamie wins, duh.

    My standalones would be:

    1. The Pursuit of Happiness by Douglas Kennedy
    2. The Sea of Tranquility by Katja Millay
    3. TFIOS because I would definitely need a good full-body ugly cry every few days because I'd be on an island
    4. Gone with the Wind
Obvs I've opted for longer books to make the most of my limited time.
  • 1. HP series
    2. The Sea of Tranquility
    3.  Beautiful Darkness
    4.  Outlander (1st book)
    5.  One of the Sultry books... probably the second one.

    That was HARD!
