  • I don't think everyone is cut out for higher education. I don't think high school should push it on students. If they show an interest in going than help them, but if they do not show them other options that they have.

I also don't think it's bad to take some time off then go back.

  • Our schools have what they call the Career Center that allows students to become certified welders, auto body, capentry and some other things. These students typically don't go to college.

Congrats to my GP Sister from another mister Bruinsbabe!!
  • We had those and didn't encourage them (which I also think is wrong, like I said kid show interest than help them), but if you weren't in one of those programs, you were told to go to college.

  • I completely agree about higher education not being for everyone. I am constantly telling friends and family that they don't need to go to college if it isn't what they want to do.  BIL works at a factory, and makes good money. College isn't for him, and there's nothing wrong with it.
H has a saying, "the world needs ditch diggers too, and those ditch diggers make more than college grads because they're willing to do the hard labor nobody else wants."  It's so true now.

My UO is that I don't care for "assigned" nicknames. Like when someone names their child something, then says "but we call him ___."  Why didn't you just name him ____ to begin with? I understand if a nickname forms over time, and that's what people call him.  But why name your child X when you get angry if people call him X, then you correct them and say you call him Y? It doesn't make sense.

I agree!  Especially when people call their child by the middle name.  Why didn't you just name them that name in the first place??  Unless it's a family name or something...that I understand.

  • Eh...we call Zachary Zack probably 85% of the time but I'd never name him just zack. I like the formality of the full name for things. Plus it gives him options on what he wants to use when he's older. Sometimes the NN work when they are young but don't grow into adulthood well IMO.

  • Yeah i don't care if people call DS Zack or Zachary. I like both and feel they both will age just fine. He can choose what he prefers when the time comes. But for instance my BIL is Richard. As a kid everyone called him Ricky or Rick. Now he prefers Richard and is glad he has that to fall back on than having to be called Ricky as an adult.

  • Some people believe that some nicknames dont work as well in a professional environment. The nickname my family calls me would not be first name I would want to have, so Im glad they didnt just name me that.

That said I like names better that dont have an "automatic" nn with them.

  • I think there are hang ups with every name and or NN or name/NN combo. My daughter has two first names and some people have had major problems with it. It is just frustrating because you can name your kid the simplest name and someone will mispronounce it or spell it wrong. So I say name your kid whatever you want and don't worry about how others feel about it.

FWIW...Ava Nichol only answers to her nameand ddoesn't respond if someone says Ava unless it is Grandpa because I guess she knows he is talking to her.
