Re: NBR: Thanksgiving Poll

  • Already celebrated!! :D
I spent it alone with my son and my dog. They did not eat their share of the pumpkin pie.
I miss big family thanksgivings. We haven't had one since my grandparents passed away in 08.

One year we had thanksgiving at the cottage. I showed up late because of work. When I got there I found out my mom was riding the little dirtbike I had as a kid. She did a nose dive and broke her nose and was hurt bad enough to go to tthe hospital. She was fine (not her first broken nose) but it gets brought up every thanksgiving.
  • What are you making for Thanksgiving?
I'm in charge of green beans (not the casserole!) and, I just found out, pie.  Thank you Baker's Square!
What are you most looking forward to eating?
My mom makes the best stuffing.  It has apples and sausage in it.  I also love rutabega.

Who are you most excited to see?
As it will only be me, DH, my mom, and my stepdad - those three people.

Are you hosting? If not, where are you going?
We'll leave Thursday morning and drive 2.5 hours up to my mom's.

    Any funny Thanksgiving stories?
    n/a

  • What are you making for Thanksgiving?

Spinach artichoke dip- DH's parents are hosting and that's all they wanted us to bring :)

What are you most looking forward to eating?

    Turkey, yams, and pumpkin pie

Who are you most excited to see?

    Our niece!!

Are you hosting? If not, where are you going?

    See above.

    Any funny Thanksgiving stories?

Not much as an adult, but some as a kid/teenager. Kids' potty humor anyone??? One year my little cousin got a mini marshmallow stuck to his butt and we all laughed our heads off about his "dingleberry" for hours. I'm sure our parents thoroughly enjoyed it ;)

What are you most looking forward to eating? The aforementioned cheesecake.

Who are you most excited to see? We're eating with our parents and my grandparents and aunts and uncles and I see them all the time. So nobody in particular.

Are you hosting? If not, where are you going? We're going to my mom's.

Any funny Thanksgiving stories? Um.... nope.

  • What are you making for Thanksgiving?  Pumpkin pie, Lemon Meringue pie and a gluten free pumpkin pie cake for SIL.

What are you most looking forward to eating? Dessert.  Stuffing is my most favorite thing ever but both my MIL and DH's grandma make the nastiest stuffing (I guess their version is dressing) so I won't get to have any this year.

Who are you most excited to see? No one?  I'm not in the mood to deal with the crazies this year.

Are you hosting? If not, where are you going? No, we are going to my MIL's first and then to DH's grandma's after.

Any funny Thanksgiving stories?  Not that I can think of.

Any funny Thanksgiving stories? My grandmother and I always do all the cooking/baking. She wanted to try a baked Alaska pie, which is essentially an ice cream and hot fudge pie with meringue on top. It looked amazing, it tasted amazing...until we realized that we forgot to bake the crust first lol.

I see the people that are coming all of the time. I guess my sweet little neice Aubrey.
Are you hosting? If not, where are you going?
We are hosting. Again. I wouldn't mind, but my Mom always pressures me to invite additional people. I really would prefer just to have my In-Laws, to be honest. I'm awful, I know.
    Any funny Thanksgiving stories?
    Not really.

  • What are you making for Thanksgiving?  Sweet potatoes and roasted veggies

What are you most looking forward to eating? Food isn't on my good list much lately, so whatever sounds good at the time

Who are you most excited to see? My H? Other than that, nobody. We are going to his brothers house and his family is not my favorite group of people. And, they all seem to think I'm handicapped now that I'm pregnant.

Are you hosting? If not, where are you going? Nope, going to my BIL and SIL's house, about 45 minutes away.

    Any funny Thanksgiving stories? None

  • At this point I will be throwing a turkey in the oven.  I can't guarantee that i will have anything else but turkey.  I don't know who is coming to dinner and I don't know what time dinner will be.  But I will have a goddamn turkey and whoever the hell wants to eat it can show up whenever the hell they want and hope that said turkey is cooked.

I will be hiding in my closet with all the bottles of wine.

What are you most looking forward to eating?

Who are you most excited to see?
It's mostly my family, who I see very frequently.  My BIL is in town and staying with us already, I was pretty excited for him to arrive.  He's a cool guy.
Are you hosting? If not, where are you going?

What are you most looking forward to eating? Mashed potatoes

Who are you most excited to see? I see everyone regularly so I'm just happy to all be together (while ignoring the in-law drama).

Any funny Thanksgiving stories?  Two years ago I was pregnant but only my parents and brother knew.  I happened to be wearing a Packers hoodie that day because they played.  I was so worried about people finding out because I wasn't drinking wine but  my uncle suspected I was pregnant because I was "wearing a big shirt".  Well, the Packers play Thursday and I plan on wearing the same hoodie.  We'll see if they think I'm pregnant again.  I am definitely not.

What are you most looking forward to eating? Turkey and rolls.

Who are you most excited to see? That we're going to my parents and we can avoid the in-law, even if means a drive and a ferry ride.

Are you hosting? If not, where are you going? Nope.

Any funny Thanksgiving stories?  Not really, my mom usually just embarrasses me with stories about the stupid crap I did 15 years ago.

What are you making for Thanksgiving?  We do raviolis for Thanksgiving.  My husband and I are making the dough, which is new this year because it's a gluten free blend rather than the old recipe.  My mil is making the sauce and the filling.  I'm also making gf garlic bread, butternut squash and sweet potato gnocchi, pumpkin pie, pecan pie, flourless chocolate cookies, pumpkin swirl cheesecake, and a salad.

What are you most looking forward to eating?  Probably the ravioli itself.

Who are you most excited to see?  My goddaughter.  I miss her like crazy.

Are you hosting? If not, where are you going?  Hosting out of necessity. We have the best space for it. We have a gluten free household and it needs to stay that way because I am extremely sensitive.  Because of incidents involving family members offering gluten free things to me that turned out not to be (flour clearly on the ingredient list), I have become distrustful of other people's food.  I get eye rolls all the time, but whatever, my health is more important than whether or not a person believes I have celiac.  Anyway, we are hosting and doing the vast majority of the work, so if anyone complains about no gluten on the table I might scream.

Any funny Thanksgiving stories? Can't think of any...

This wasn't supposed to turn into a rant.  Oops.

  • We aren't cooking anything or going to a house because we're going to hopefully watch the Lions beat the Packers on Thanksgiving!

If we were cooking, I'd be looking forward to stuffing and sweet potato casserole.

No fun Thanksgiving stories either but hopefully this year we will make one!

  • I couldn't help but jump in -- this is a fun one!

What are you making for Thanksgiving?
my family is doing something new this year -- we aren't making our entire Thanksgiving dinner at home! Crazy, and it will def feel very strange. But we will make a small turkey so we can have our leftovers. Naturally, I will make some stuffing as well because I don't ever eat it!

What are you most looking forward to eating?
Hmmm, probably the dark turkey meat.

Who are you most excited to see?
My sister! She is super pregnant (first baby in the family) and it's the first time I will get to feel the baby move -- the last time I saw her not even her husband was able to feel the baby kick yet.

Are you hosting? If not, where are you going?
Not hosting -- that would be interesting fitting the family into my little apartment though! I'll be at my parents' house

    Any funny Thanksgiving stories?
Hmm, any funny stories... let me think about this one... Nothing ridiculously funny that I can think of. Ask me the same question about Christmas and I could write a saga!

  • What are you making for Thanksgiving?
I don't have to make anything this year. Woot woot!

What are you most looking forward to eating?
Pumpkin pie. And this sweet potato thing my mom makes with pecans and caramel in it. Noms.

Who are you most excited to see?
My family. My brother is flying in from California. He hasn't been home since this summer.

Are you hosting? If not, where are you going?
Nope. We have the first Thanksgiving meal at my in laws around noon and then the second at my parents around 5.

    Any funny Thanksgiving stories?

  • What are you making for Thanksgiving? A stop at the liquor store on my way home one night this week.  I'm in charge of bringing the wine.

What are you most looking forward to eating?  Stuffing and sweet potatoes.  And turnips - I LOVE my aunt's turnips, and I never eat turnips any other time because I'm the only one I know who likes them.

Who are you most excited to see?  Everyone.  I pretty much only see my dad's side of the family at Thanksgiving, so I'm excited to see them.

Are you hosting? If not, where are you going?  Not hosting.  Going to visit my Dad's side of the family in Western CT.  We literally travel over the river and through the woods.

Any funny Thanksgiving stories?  Nothing I can think of right now.
  • What are you making for Thanksgiving?  I'm not making anything. DH is making a cheesecake.

What are you most looking forward to eating? PIE

Who are you most excited to see? We see everyone pretty regularly so I'll just say everyone.

Are you hosting? If not, where are you going? Nope. We go to ILs for dinner and my parents for dessert.

Any funny Thanksgiving stories? Not funny but 2 years ago my dad had gastric bypass the day before Thanksgiving. We were astounded anyone would choose that day to get it. He only did it that day because he's a music teacher and it was a long weekend and he wanted to get back into the classroom the next week because it was concert season (he's crazy).

What are you most looking forward to eating? My mom's stuffing, for sure.

Who are you most excited to see? My nephews. It is so fun to see my boys and my nephews all together.

Are you hosting? If not, where are you going? Nope, we're traveling 3.5 hours to get to our hometown and spend the holidays with family.

Any funny Thanksgiving stories? Nope. To be honest, my Grandma just took a bad turn and was put in a nursing home and my step-dad's family (he has 9 siblings) who we always celebrate with is in a bad place and haven't planned anything yet. I'm a little sad about Thanksgiving this year.

What are you making for Thanksgiving?  The Sweet Potatoes I linked in Thanksgiving sides post. Oh, and stuffing.

What are you most looking forward to eating? My sweet potatoes, and my momo's mashed potatoes.

Who are you most excited to see? My cousins.

Are you hosting? If not, where are you going? Our condo is too tiny to host. We are going to my Aunt's house.

Any funny Thanksgiving stories? A full house of about 25 Cubans is always amusing. LOUD, but amusing. One year my Aunt decided she was going to make a chocolate souffle. The problem was, she got super duper drunk (which she doesn't usually do), and totally screwed it up and it ended up more like chocolate soup. That was  funny in itself, but someone always mentions it every year, which prompts her to yell, very loudly, "Shut up about the fucking chocolate soup!" It's sort of an honor to be the family member that gets her to do that.

Your family sounds just like mine.

My mom under cooked the yucca one year and we've never let her hear the end of it. Every Thanksgiving, someone has to ask if they're going to break their teeth on the yucca this year and she gets SO MAD.
