Weekly Accountability Post

Good morning! I'll have to start this but come answer myself later. Busy morning at work!

Re: Weekly Accountability Post

  • Good morning!

Week was pretty good. We went out to eat once, Friday night. Bill was under $50. Bought groceries with a meal plan, so hopefully no wasted food from this trip.

    Increased my 401k contribution.

No pets for us at the moment. Working long hours, my DH travels for work often, would not be fair to the animal.
  • 1. How MM was your week? Decent. I did sign up for a hot yoga class with some of my friends. It is $50 for 5 classes. I really didn't want to spend the money but I need to do something about my stress levels and this seemed like a great option.
    2. Any progress toward your goals? We officially have but away $6,250 to our $10,000 6 months of living expenses fund! $4,750 to go!
    3. What pet(s) do you have or want? Pictures welcome! We have three cats! One named smudge and our kittens named Gatsby and Nick!

  • 1. How MM was your week?

Pretty good- had to pick up 2 new sound machines for the girls' rooms ($60) but other than that, just the usual expenses- groceries, gas, diapers for DD#2.

    2. Any progress toward your goals?

Yes- had my first dependent care FSA amount taken out of my paycheck- $192.30. I should get it back next week, but it seems like we'll be fine without it. Will probably end up moving that amount to my 401K contribution once both girls are in school, which would bring up my contribution to 15%. I'm also starting to get all of the tax stuff together- want to get everything filed quickly so we can open our vacation savings account.

    3. What pet(s) do you have or want? Pictures welcome!

We don't have any pets currently- we had a cat (that I got when I was 13) and a dog, but they passed away in 2011 and 2012. Hopefully we can get some type of animal once the girls are older- I kind of like not having all of the animal hair on everything though!

  • 1. How MM was your week? doing very well. I decided to try the envelope system from DR. Not necessarily doing full program, but I thought envelope system made sense. So far so good. It's going to take some time to get into the grove, but slowly but surely it will get easier.
    2. Any progress toward your goals? For us, sticking to our budget is progress towards our goals
    3. What pet(s) do you have or want? Pictures welcome!  We have 3 miniture dachshunds. Husband would like one larger dog, but the deal is not until the two older dogs have passed. Four dogs is too much, even though we have the room.
  • 1) My weekend was pretty MM: spent $35 on gas for a full tank, spent $30 at Target for groceries and $28 at Costco for a small run

    2) I sent $1500 toward our house down payment.  I also bought a fitbit zip last week and have started using it to try to increase the number of steps I take each day (law is a very sedentary job).

    3) H and I have one cat named Lady.  We got her from the humane society a couple years ago.  She was 2 at the time, and it was love at first sight!  She's incredibly spoiled, but she's also an amazing lap cat.  She spent nearly 3 hours sitting on me yesterday. She's also kind of like a dog - greets me at the door, stands on her hind legs for head scratches/treats, etc.

  • 1. How MM was your week? Not too bad. Went away this weekend to a friend's house, and spent $60 for the weekend away.  I call that success.  Only spent $15 on groceries for the week, which is really good.
    2. Any progress toward your goals? Getting our refinance rolling.
    3. What pet(s) do you have or want? Pictures welcome! We have a Collie named Sadie, and a black and white cat named Spooky that nevers comes out and is very anti-social.

  • Ok, I'm back!

    1.  Our weekend was not especially MM because we went to the Patriots game.  However, I have no regrets at all.  Our tickets were $100 each, but we ended up getting a surprise upgrade from a friend's friend and sitting in the $200 section, 15 rows behind the Patriots' bench, for no additional cost.  We also had good self-restraint and didn't buy anything once we were inside the stadium, and I went to work early the next day despite extreme exhaustion.  It could have been worse!

    2.  My retirement matching benefit kicks in tomorrow!  I'll get a an extra check monthly for 5% of my salary to put right into my Roth IRA.  This will allow me to max out starting in 2014, and probably have extra to contribute to H's (soon-to-be) Roth as well.  I also received a surprise $50 payment from one of my side jobs (a forgotten invoice from last summer) that I put in our house fund.  H was able to put a lot of his paycheck into short-term savings, which creates a good buffer for us in case his car needs service.

    3.  No pets for us except for 2 fish.  I have dog fever really bad, but they aren't allowed in our current house.  It's actually one of my main motivations for saving for a DP.  I want to adopt a mixed-breed from a shelter, but H wants a pure-bred Portuguese Water Dog.  We'll probably do both eventually as a compromise.  Cats are allowed in my current place, and I like them but am too allergic to actually live with one.
  • 1. How MM was your week? For the most part the weekend was good up until late last night. We ended up having to take one of our cats to the emergency clinic last night/early this morning. Turns out he had fluid in his lungs. He's still there and they want to keep him overnight to keep an eye on him and keep him on oxygen...We had to pay up front for everything, to the tune of $1,900. Ugh.

    2. Any progress toward your goals? Any progress we made to put money into savings went right into the vets pockets.

    3. What pet(s) do you have or want? Pictures welcome! We have 5 cats--an orange tabby, a Russian Blue, a grey tabby, a black cat and a calico. We ended up with the last 3 when a random cat gave birth on our back patio. We found homes for the momma cat and the other babies, but not for these 3 so we ended up keeping them. We also have fish and 2 parakeets, and DH wants to add a turtle to the mix, haha.

And because I need a smile, here's a pic of the furbabies.
  • 1. How MM was your week?
It wasn't bad. We don't really buy much during the week and this weekend we just ran errands and got groceries.

    2. Any progress toward your goals?
I upped my 401k contributions by 1% for the new year.

    3. What pet(s) do you have or want? Pictures welcome!
We currently have once cat. Once we own our own home with a yard I really want at least one large dog. I've always loved collies but I don't know if I can deal with the long hair. My hair and the cat hair in our apartment already drives us nuts ;)

  • 1. How MM was your week? Pretty good. Groceries/Target shopping. I realized I went way over on groceries the first 2 weeks of the month so now I'm desperately trying to stay under our budget for the month. I'm determined to do it! We chopped in for pizza with friends too.

    2. Any progress toward your goals?
We made some decisions about life insurance this weekend, so we'll get that ball officially rolling this week. Other than that looking forward to my first larger paycheck for my new position this week, and trying to stick to our budget.

    3. What pet(s) do you have or want? Pictures welcome! We have a lovable cocker spaniel/poodle rescue who I just adore. I would love another dog but it's not practical for us so it's not happening.

  • 1. Weekend was pretty good. On Friday, I Had to buy some extra items I did not plan on buying, but it was worth it. DD was sick all weekend so we didn't get out of the house. 2. DH had a sucky paycheck because he had two unpaid day offs, so no progress this week. Hopefully Friday we will be able to pay some debt down without a problem. 3. We have a mini pincher/yorkie/beagle mix. And DD has a beta fish. DH wants a huge dog but won't make up his mind.

  • Thanks guys. It was sticker shock, that's for sure. I saw him a little while ago, he's in a little incubator with oxygen and he's already starting to look better so I'm hoping everything goes well. He came from a bad home and it took a year of hard work for him to finally get comfortable around us, and now he's just the biggest cuddle bug ever and he's practically glued to my hip, so I hate to see him go through this.
  • @RockyMountainGirl - good on you for taking care of the 3 kittens.  So many people would not.  I want a whole house full of cats, but H says the cat to human ratio needs to be no more than 1:1.

I would also like a bird, but H says absolutely not.  His mother's pet scarlet macaw bit off part of his pinky finger when he was 9 months old.  They weren't able to re-attach it because it was too small.  True story.  He doesn't remember it, but he has a rather profound fear of large birds.  Also - his mom kept the bird, and it died on the table while in surgery at UGA's exotic animal hospital like 4 years later.  While pets are part of the family, dismemberment of a baby's appendage would probably go one step too far for me.   Needless to say, H and his mom don't have the best relationship ever....

My week? Man, this has changed from weekend to week huh. that's hard to remember! Just groceries, gas and bills... 2 dinner's out at $50 (one for DH birthday) and a $11 pair of jeans. And then we bought flights to Jamaica and travel insurance this week too.

    2. Any progress toward your goals?
Just the normal- no credit card debt...

  • Oh my gosh, your poor husband! I'm pretty sure if any of my pets dismembered my (future) children I would be finding a new home for that pet ASAP. I love my animals but there is no way that would be ok.

Funny story, my mom bought me the parakeet when I was about 9 (apparently I was going through a phase, and didn't like the idea of no longer being an only child, haha). I initially had wanted a cockatoo or parrot but they didn't have any at the store and they wouldn't be getting any for another week or so. I was so adamant about wanting a pet right that very minute, that my mom just said screw it and got me the parakeet (she had me convinced it it was a baby parrot, lol). Apparently I was a holy terror around the time my kid brother was born, haha. Oops!

If you ever want a kitty fix, come on over. These little guys have plenty of cuddles to go around. I think DH has finally resigned himself to the fact that strays of all sorts manage to find me so we'll probably always be surrounded by animals. Now if only I could convince him to get a dog, we'd be all set! :)
  • I'm new to the MM board, and posted last week asking about  ways to get out of debt/build a savings, so I figured I'd chime in. :)

    1. How MM was your week? No too bad! I only ate out one meal, which is a big accomplishment for me. I spent a total of $37 this weekend, $30 on gas and $7 on candles.

    2. Any progress toward your goals? Yes! My big goal is to pay down my $2400 credit card bill, so this week I paid $200 towards it! I actually went thru some stuff at home that I don't wear/use and sold it for $40 of that payment which was great. Planning to sell more this week too. Next week I'll be upping my retirement contribution from 7% to 10% when my promotion kicks in.

    3. What pet(s) do you have or want? Pictures welcome! I have an awesome little dog I got from a rescue 7 months ago when I moved out. She's so sweet, but crazy too. I don't know how to attach pictures, sorry!

  • abrewer5 I'm pretty new around here too. These guys have been super helpful though and it seems like a pretty nice board. :)

1 - Friday night we went to sesame street live with DD and got dinner beforehand ($16).  We also got her some cotton candy and a toy ($20).  Saturday we went to target to get household items ($81), dry cleaning ($12), and jean alterations ($28), and lunch ($9).  Sunday we finally got all the xmas decor down :)

2 - I added $325 to our emergency fund this weekend.  We are going to cancel our dental ins. Feb. 1st....$62 is just too much for us.  We plan on getting a dental discount card.

3 - We have a mini schnauzer Gabby and 2 parakeets.

How MM was your week? Our was pretty good. We spent $1.28 on a redbox movie, and $36 gas for H's car. Any progress towards our goals? Per mint.com we are back on track for saving for a house DP. But we are still behind on our e-fund because we are paying for H's first semester of school and the extras. We hope to be caught up soon as we started banking some good money last week. What pets do you have? We have an 8yr old maltese

I've done hot yoga in the past. It really varies by studio! Bikram I do not enjoy-it is way too hot. Heated Vinyasa flow is usually not quite as ridiculous. I usually like those types of classes since it adds a cardio component.

Sorry about the week thing, everyone! Early morning typo.

It was rough, I won't lie. I bought a Groupon that was a great deal, but couldn't even finish it. The last time I went I was so dizzy all day that I just sat on the couch replenishing my salt with Tositos. Not the intended result of yoga! They also yelled at you if your form wasn't perfect ("Bikram says your knee must be straight!") which seems against the spirit of yoga to me.

That said, Alyssa I hope you enjoy it, whichever kind you're doing! There are so many types of yoga, and we all need to find the right one for us.

Sorry I didn't see this@vlagr29 I  did hot yoga the other night and made it 35 minutes into the 60 minute session before I had to leave. It is 98 degrees in there and I lost it. My friends said they had to step out the first time but once they were mentally aware of how it was going to be for them they had no problem sticking it out the second time.
$55 unlimited is great but this place only has it on Sundays so I technically get more than a month out of a pass. She is a Midwife and is busy but she wants to start Pilates which I would much rather do.

  • I've never done hot yoga before - but I think I would wilt.

I love pilates and regular yoga though.  I'm also loving Pure Barre... it's ballet-based, which takes me back to my dancing days in high school.  No pointe shoes though!

$55 is a great deal if you can bring yourself to do it.  I know some people who hated it at first and then just completely fell in love as they gave it another chance.  My friends who do it make a point to drink a thing of gatorade before starting so that they don't dehydrate halfway through.
