I have never met a dachshund that wasn't sketchy as heck. Those little guys have a powerful bite and short temper!

My UO: I think all Facebook statuses are pretty pointless, unless it contains an announcement of some sort (job, moving, engagement, life event, etc.). I realize that if everyone did this my feed would be pretty boring, though.

I think erectile dysfunction commercial & yeast infection treatment commercials should not be on TV. First off it's awkward in general when watching with a group of people but also, if you have some symptoms that belong to either of the above I would think your doctor would be recommending meds and you shouldn't need to TV to tell you what the TV world thinks you should be taking to treat yourself.

Also, what about when your child questions you about the commercial (bc it will happen to some people) "mommy what is erectile dysfunction?"

Hm. Well medication commercials will always be on tv as long as it's legal. The drug companies exist due to drug sales and they have to advertise. They advertise to doctors and direct to consumers.

Is it right? Probably not, but it's how they operate. 99% of people would have never known what fibromyalgia or restless leg syndrome was before the ads. And yes, it also contributes to drug-seeking and over-prescribing.

And if my kid asked me what ED was, I hope I'd be able to explain it in a way that is clinical, yet age appropriate.

I'm definitely not saying all medical ads but just some specific ones that I find unnecessary for TV.

I don't know... I feel like the commercials have a place on TV, and it can start a conversation between the persons suffering and their doctors.

I also think that most people of a certain age have been raised to believe anything re: their bodies (especially genitalia related) is shameful and needs to be kept to themselves. I feel like *not* having ads such as these on TV can be as detrimental for those suffering in "shameful" silence as having to explain what a yeast infection or ED is to a kid.

Does that make sense? am I going to be flamed? I HATE UO DAY!!! :-P

  • But where is the line? What's appropriate for tv? Pad/tampon ads? RePhresh? Condoms? I'm honestly curious.
    imageimageimageAnniversary
  • I think most ads are stupid, but I gave Always Infinity a chance because of the commercial and I have never looked back. Also, I think drug commercials are good because a lot of people only get their health info from TV and if the symptoms relate to them it could make them go to the doctor's office and could help their health. Kids will ask questions about everything. better give them the information before they get it from their friends.

As someone who was there under 16 I totally agree. It was BORING. We were there for my uncle's wedding. I was 14 and the oldest kid, so I was tasked with corralling all of my younger cousins and keeping them in the Excalibur arcade for like 3 days while the adults did all the Vegas things.

As for yeast infections, self-diagnosis is common and considered okay as long as you've had one diagnosed before and aren't getting them too often. So I don't really see your point about seeing a doctor for that. For erectile dysfunction, sure, you need to see a doctor, but you can't get the prescription without a doctor's diagnosis anyway.

I think we should all be saying 'penis' and 'vagina' to our kids, just like we say 'elbow,' so I think your concern for kids is more of a societal problem than a problem with the commercials themselves.

I'll agree that commercials for prescription medications are going to be problematic insofar as some people will self-diagnose, ask their doctor for an Rx, and see someone else if refused. I don't know how rampant this problem is though.

This is kind of off-topic but I read an article last year that talked about protecting your child from child molesters and warning signs that a child may be getting molested. One of the tips they gave was to teach your children the correct terms for penis and vagina instead of using a nickname or something. The reason being that a molester will rarely refer to private parts by their clinical names but rather a nickname or something silly.

If you teach your children to call them by their clinical names and they all of the sudden start calling them something else, it would open up a dialog to ask them who taught them that word and so on. That's not to say it couldn't be something your child learned from a friend or something but it would definitely be something you noticed.

  • I hate designer dog "breed" names. And yes, "breed" is in quotation marks because there are no true breeds made out of mixes, so calling them a breed is incorrect.

Just call the dogs what they really are! They are super freaking adorable, yes! But they are mixes. They are not "puggles." They are pug/beagle mixes. They are not "chiweenies" (shudder). They are chihuahua/dachshund mixes.

If people would stop calling all these "designer" dogs by their cutesy mix names, I think it would go a long way to dispelling the rampant overbreeding practices and backyard breeders who are selling these mixed breeds at a premium instead of people going to find them in a shelter.
