NBR: How old were you when you got your first ear piercing

  • My mom took my sister and I to get our ears pierced when I was 4 and my sister was 5.  Which I find funny because my mom didn't get her ears pierced until she was in her 30's (I was in high school at the time).

  • In my completely unofficial research, it seems like white people associate getting a girl's ears pierced as a "coming of age" ritual when a girl gets older, while other cultures just pierce the ears of the tiny babies and get it over with when they are teeny.

  • I was 10.  And they're uneven because I totally jumped when the first one got done.  Like, I cannot wear studs because it look silly, they're so uneven.

I think earrings on tiny babies looks silly.  I get that it is cultural for some, but I still can't get past it.
  • 8 for the first set.  12 or 13 when I got the second holes.  Hello late 80s.
    image
  • I was 10.  The piercings were infected within months and I let the holes close up.  I got my ears re-pierced when I was 18, then got second piercings in my ears when I was 19.  My daughter is 5 and I can't imagine wanting to put holes in her perfect little ears!  LOL.  She's already asking for pierced ears.  :(
  • 18.  The closed up two years later after one month without wear.
Then I did it again at 28.  Wore earrings everyday for a year.  Took them out for two weeks.  Yep.  Closed up again.
I might try again because my husband bought me earrings and I would like to wear them at some point.

  • Getting pierced ears was my gift for my first communion, so I was like 8 or 9, I think.

I was 8 or 9. They got infected and closed up within a month. I never bothered to get them done again.
  • Both my older sisters had to wait until 13.  But our parents got divorced when I was 10, and I talked my dad into it that year.  Thanks, divorce guilt!

Both of my sisters are still pretty irritated about it.

  • 6 months old.

It's not really a rite of passage.  My sister was the oddball who didn't get her ears pierced until she was 7 years old.

  • I was 4th grade so 10?? My oldest niece got hers done for her 5th birthday. To me, that is too young. My MIL said "that's just what is done in the S family." Uh, no. I understand some cultures do it young but that's not us and there are no "rules" to ear piercing.

I can't even remember when I got my second hole done.

  • 7. Then I let them close up but pushed them back through a year later. By 11, I had three holes in each ear. Now, my left ear only is allergic to everything, so I can't wear any.
