Any kind of infidelity/marriage-in-crisis themes, excessive violence or abuse of any kind, or excessive and unnecessary vulgar language (like Hot Tub Time Machine in book form - just no), dieting/ weight issues, brand name dropping-- if you've already fit in 3 Pradas and 2 Guccis by page 3, I'm outta there.

I'll also second @julie37619' s"Middle class white men who are bored with their lives/thinking lots of thoughts" and add books with middle class white women doing the same thing.

  • Vampires, zombies, werewolves. Just not my cup of tea

I also very rarely reading books with animals as the main character. Which, with my profession, is kind of ironic and a subject matter that is frequently recommended to me.

    This!

I also find I'm turned off by any book where the description includes the phrase "coming of age." I am generally not a fan of novels about "coming of age." I often find them boring. There are exceptions.

  • Excessive language
    Graphic scenes (violence, sexual, etc....)
Books that are out to make Christians/Christianity seem like they are Satan inspired
    Zombies
    Horror

ANYBODY who is thinking lots of thoughts.
I also tend to abhor any book that comes with the recommendation that it changed somebody's life, religion, or world-view.

  • I stay away from books centering around infidelity in marriage, especially when it's in a positive light.  Infidelity in dating, while not okay, doesn't turn me off to the same degree.

This, and dead spouse situations.  And also anything with sad animal situations.  I just can't.  I also don't give a damn about zombies so I avoid those, too (but I did like Warm Bodies).

The one and only thing I will not read is books about pets (i.e. Marley & Me, Dewey the Library Cat, etc.) because we all know how it ends and I can't even handle it.

I can handle people dying, child abuse, rape, end of the world, brain eating, cannibalism, torture, occult, war, plague, and total mass destruction, but don't make me sit through the death of a pet.

All this.  I'm exactly the same way.

I lack empathy when it comes to humans, but am a blubbering mess when it comes to animals. Go figure.
    Ditto
I write sexy books. I read all the books. I love dresses & macarons.

  • It's not so much topics, but how they are depicted.  I try to avoid graphic descriptions of anything:  sex, violence, surgeries, autopsies, animal abuse, etc.  I prefer not to have too much swearing in my books.

Yes, I am that much of a prude.

  • Animal abuse, religion, self-help, anything that even hints at a ghost story, oh, and Pet Sematary by Stephen King. I do not need to have nightmares about my zombified dead pets.

I can read pretty graphic stuff just because I grew up on Law and Order SVU, Criminal Minds, CSI, etc., but if it is severely graphic violence, etc. just for the sake of shock, I'll usually skim past it.

  • I just DNF'd the first book in a series after seeing a spoiler that the second book contains romantic infidelity (MC falls for the sister of the woman he pursued/married in the first book).  Uh, nope.  Also, ick.
