NBR: Lotion

What's your favorite, super hydrating lotion?

I admittedly am not that great at remember to put lotion on, but I think I'm also using the wrong things.  I have dry hands, especially this time of year.  Warm weather come already, please!  Anything I put on them seems to not help or only help for a very short period of time.  For those who have dry skin, what do you use?

Re: NBR: Lotion

  • For lotion to work for me, it pretty much has to have shea butter in it.
I recently bought myself a tub of raw shea butter and it is amazing.  It doesn't smell awesome, but once it dries, you really can't smell it anyway, and I think you could probably mix a few drops of essential oil into it to make it smell nice, I'm just too lazy for that.

I bought it from these guys at a flower show, but you can probably get it at lots of places.

When I get really dry skin in the winter, I use Eucerin Calming Creme.

  • I use Trader Joe's Moisturizing Cream.

My mom swears my Shea Butter and Coconut Oil.  I can't handle the smell.  :)

  • I swear by two - for my hands, on a daily basis, Crabtree and Evelyn ultra moisturizing hand therapy ( I prefer the Summer Hill fragrance).  For my body, in the winter, I use The Body Shop Shea Body Butter.  It is the only product that keeps my skin from itching in the Minnesota winter.
  • @SusieBW I think I have something with shea butter somewhere. I'll pull that out and see what it is.  Though it's probably pretty old at this point.

@MrsC7 I might have a ton of those samples from when we were battling Wes's eczema.  I'll have to check it out tonight.

ETA: Nevermind.  It's Aquaphor.  Which would probably help, but would be awfully messy throughout the day.

I've been using Aveeno's Eczema Therapy that did not work for Wes.  It's the best I've used so far, but I'm still not in love with it.

  • Sounds like Shea butter is a good place to start.

Also, I was wondering if coconut oil would make the list.  How do you handle it with your clothes?  Seems like it would be really messy.

    It's slippery as waterweed.
  • I use Vaseline Intensive Care Total Moisture on my body.  On my hands, I use an Avon lotion called Silicone Glove.  I absolutely loooooove that stuff, and it doesn't leave my hands feeling greasy or sticky.

What did you wind up using for Wes' eczema?

  • @KrsCrp83 We ended up needing a steroid, Triamcinalone to clear it up initially. We then went to Desonide (another prescription, but not as potent as the first) for flare ups and we used Hydrolatum (non prescription lotion) for daily use.  We've finally stopped at 18 months needing twice daily soakings in hydrolatum!

And now I've just asked myself why I'm not using that! Wow, SnShne, you're brilliant.  L-)

That's exactly why I'm terrible at doing it.  I hate the feeling.  And then when you do wash your hands, they repel water.  It's creepy.

This is why I only do the heavy duty lotion right before bed.  That way it soaks in while I'm sleeping & my hands don't feel slimey.

My daytime lotion is Advanced Therapy by suave.  It works really well but doesn't feel greasy.  Bonus, it's inexpensive!  :)

I've got dry itchy spots that I should probably see a dermatologist about.  I 'manage' it, but it never goes away.  During the day I use the Aveeno Eczema but at night I do Aquaphor, esp. on my feet, elbows, lips, and eye creases.  For a general all-body lotion I've been using a Philospohy almond butter, which is amazing, but I'm using the last container from a Christmas gift box, and probably wouldn't shell out that much for body lotion for myself once it's gone.

  • I use Vaseline Moisture Rescue (well the up and up version of it). I absolutely have to put it on after I wash my hands. That's all I use and it soaks in great for me.

  • With using raw shea lately, I've found that it doesn't leave that yucky feeling when you wash your hands at all.  And it doesn't wash off at all either.  I can put it on literally right before washing my hands, and they still feel moisturized after I wash and dry them.
  • I use coconut oil.  I've never had any trouble with it being messy.

OMG, I am the exact opposite.  I LOVE lotion, and I feel like a shriveled corpse without it.  I'm sure I'd feel different if I lived somewhere humid, but I seriously feel like my skin is crunchy paper if I've gone 12 hours without putting lotion on.

I use Eucerin Intensive Repair Very Dry Skin Lotion, even on my face.

  • I have been battling eczema for the last year. :(

After showering I apply Cetaphil all over my body, rub it in, and then let it dry. Before I get dressed I put on Aveeno Eczema Therapy and throughout the day I apply Burt's Bees Milk and Honey to any dry patches. I also use Rosebud Salve on my lips and apply it to dry patches if they are irritated.

Once a week I exfoliate with Philosophy Gingerbread Man Scrub and then apply either Raw Shea Butter or Coconut Oil afterward. Both have a distinct scent so I don't like using them everyday.

I take my moisturization very seriously.

I'm allergic to this.  Yeah, this.  The non-irritating lotion.  It gives me angry red bumps all over and it stings.  Fun.

I hate the way liquidy lotions feel, but I've come to really like the creamy ones -- usually sold in pots not tubes/bottles.  Aveeno Intense Relief is the only tube/bottle "lotion" I find I can use without having that icky, slimy feeling left.  I also really like The Body Shop's Body Butters.  I find that applying less cream more often works best for me to avoid that I-have-to-wash-this-slime-off-NOW! feeling.  And I apply an ointment-style moisturising cream to my feet and legs overnight and then put on the fluffy stay-at-home style socks.  In the morning, my feet & legs are soft and I don't have to suffer the icky feeling all day.

    I have the same problem.
I figure since I have Celiac, it might have something to do with the oatmeal, but honestly I have no idea.  I have reactions like that to a lot of lotions.

It may be something in the Eucerin.  I break out in hives with every Eucerin cream/lotion I have every tried.
