Paying Surrogates - Discuss

A little background: In Canada, it is illegal to pay a surrogate. One of Canada's Members of Parliament is going to introduce a Bill that would allow payment for surrogates (I don't want to give a civics lesson, but it's what is called a "Private Member's Bill" and those rarely pass.  But, I thought this would make an interesting topic.

What do you think? Should surrogates be paid?

I agree with @inyouruterus.  Why shouldn't they be paid?  They're risking their health and body to carry a child that isn't theirs for you.  They'll have all the postpartum issues without a baby to take home.

  • This is crazy.  Of course they should be paid.  As long as nobody is being forced to bake a baby against their will, this should be a business transaction.  Just like buying and selling eggs and sperm.

I agree as well that they should be paid.  I thought this might stir up more debate.  Oh well :)

DH and I never seriously thought about surrogacy, but I always imagined if we used a surrogate that I would want to buy them a huge "gift" if I couldn't pay them.  You know, like a car.

Damn, now I'm being summoned like MH.

Sorry, but this one I can't take a side on.

One side I feel that they should be paid because they are taking on the risk of carrying this child, and deserve compensation for that.

On the other side I feel that surrogates know what they're getting into and most women choosing to do this for someone, is not doing it for the money.

I think this is even more reason to "reward" someone.  Surrogacy is such a selfless act.

It really is.  Most likely though, people who are using a surrogate understand that and would compensate them like others have mentioned.  With something very large.

They should 100% be paid.  They are putting their physical and emotional health at risk and deserve to be compensated for it.

I don't feel sorry for you.
  • I think compensating surrogates financially is okay, but I think there needs to be limits to protect women who might be doing it only because they are in a desperate financial situation. I think we need to ensure that financial reasons are not the primary motivator for surrogates and that surrogates do understand the risks and the emotional issues they potentially might face.

I could hold you for a million years
To make you feel my love.
  • Backseat- why can't money be a motivator? Men don't jack off into a cup for the good of others; they do ot for money. Counseling is always a huge part of surrogacy, if done at a clinic or office that knows what they're doing.

Denying compensation would force more women into a situation where they wouldn't have access to the mental health they might need in this situation.
  • Brij- you're not an outcast. You're an attention seeker with terrible opinions.
  • I think it can be a motivator, but shouldn't be the primary motivator. I think there should be limits on how much a person can be compensated just like when a person participated in a clinical trial. If the compensation is too high then it can be undue inducement.

I do not think men should be compensation much for sperm donation. I think enough for time and inconvenience should be it. I'm not sure where that dollar amount falls.

I could hold you for a million years
To make you feel my love.
