A California king size bed would be amazing in our house!  H is 6'5 and a bigger guy.  He takes up way too much space in our queen.
We've said we would love a sleep number since he likes the bed soft, and I like it hard.
funny story about a sleep number! my parents thought they had different sleeping preferences, they had a water bed that my mom loved, but didn't give my dad enough support, so they replaced it with an ultra-firm mattress that my dad liked and my mom hated. they got a sleepnumber and after the few months of adjustments they both ended up on the same number.  they love the bed, but are now wishing they hadn't spent quite so much and had gotten a memory foam or something similar since they actually like the same firmness.
That's hilarious.  I have a feeling we would be that same way.  When we moved in together I brought my firm mattress with.  H complained and complained about it, but he also stopped snoring and his sleep apnea was a lot less with my firmer mattress.  So he actually sleeps a lot better with a firm mattress, but he complains that it doesn't encase you.  We would probably end up close to the same number.  It wouldn't surprise me.

Does anyone have any experience with downgrading the size of your bed? We have a king size right now and it fits, but we want to upgrade the bed and mattress at some point and are thinking of going to a queen. Queen stuff is a little bit cheaper for one thing, and it would give us some more room in the bedroom. But, during the winter I don't mind sleeping so close, but during 100*+ summers and my husband being a human furnace, I am not sure if I can handle it.

I mean, I love my H but he needs to stay as far away from me as possible when we sleep. We can sleep on queens, but it's not great.  Our sleep improved dramatically with a king.

Memory foam also tends to retain heat.

Not going to lie, I'm sort of a fan of the days when people had two separate beds in the same room.

    That I could get behind.
We've joked about 3 beds.  1 big enough for sex and cuddling, then 1 for each of us separately for those nights we just want to sprawl out and have good sleep.  It sounds amazing to me.

There's a funny episode of HIMYM where Marshall and Lilly attempt this. Spoiler alert: it doesn't go well. I think it could work IRL however.

H and I are both cuddle sleepers, which I guess is unusual. When he's away I usually sleep on the couch or the bed just feels too empty. We went with a queen bed mainly for the difference in mattress cost. It worked out well since we ended up buying a house with a smaller master bedroom, which doesn't really bother us but wouldn't have worked with a king.
  • Looks interesting! Unfortunately the closest Costco to us is 2 hours away. Our community would be a great fit for one, so I'm hoping we get one in the next few years. It was a big deal that now we have an Ikea 2 hours away instead of 6+!

I think we'll probably try to get a king size memory foam after we buy a house. It wouldn't be a great fit in the apartment now and we've got a full size already in the guest bedroom.
Yeah we waited until we had a house before we bought it, but it's been a huge (amazing) change.  We both sleep much better.

I'm pretty sure Costco delivers...  The one we have is the Novaform.  It gets really good reviews on CR.  It's been the "best budget buy" in previous years.
If you're a member, Costco should deliver, free of charge too! It's one of their best features, imo. Heck, the closest IKEA to us is a ten hour drive, but on the few days a year they offer free shipping, we order the things we've been eyeing and they drive it out here, hehe.

We have the Novaform mattress, too. :)
  • I'm going to go with daycare too. It's SO expensive in my state and over half of my paycheck will be going towards it. It's really stressing me out!

Bigger SFH would be nice too...Right now we're in a first floor condo with elephants living upstairs so that gets frustrating, lol.

  • Can I count paying off all our student loans as a "big purchase" if it is paid off in a lump sum? Haha, that would be nice.

For us, probably finishing our basement. It's not a must, but it would be nice so that DH could have his poker nights and watch his football games down there.

  • DH has been unemployed for a year. We agreed that when he gets a job we will see if we can fit a cleaning service into the budget.

When got married we sold our houses and bought a new one.  We agreed to get a king size bed and we had enough money in our budget to spluge on it along with some new furniture. We got a new bedroom set and a king split Serta icomfort. It is the only new furniture we bought and it was during a Memorial Day sale where we got 0% interest for 5 years. We LOVE this bed. It was so worth it since we will probably use it for 20 years or more.

  • For those mentioning the Costco Novaform bed, would you say there is a comparable mattress at Sam's Club? My FI and I have a membership at Sam's Club and was planning on getting a queen size mattress from there when we get an apartment in a couple months.

The nearest Costco is about 45 minutes to an hour away from us and it's not worth it to us right now to have a membership there. Maybe if we ever moved closer someday.

  • I've never been to a Sam's Club, sorry! I'm no help. :)

There may be, but my guess is they probably don't have anything quite as good.  H and I are members of both, and we find Costco's quality to generally be superior (not always, but it's a good bet).

The Costco membership fee is $55 for the standard membership.  It really might be worth getting the membership for a year to be able to buy the mattress you want.  I know a couple who did that so they could buy wedding flowers from Costco.  It seems kind of strange, but the cost isn't that much and the savings on a purchase that big can make it worthwhile.  You might also find that you end up making a trip or two out there during the year and can get additional value from the membership.  Honestly, the amount of money we save on H's allergy meds (we buy Costco brand zyrtec) more than pays for the annual executive membership, which is $110.  You can get a year's supply of those meds for $14.  So with everything else we buy there we are coming out ahead.  Anyway my point is that if there's something big enough you want to buy that they sell, it might be worth the $55 fee.

Most Costcos have samples of that mattress in the warehouse, and I'm pretty sure they will let you in to walk around even if you don't have a membership.  You could call ahead and ask to see if they have it.  Also, I might be misremembering, but I feel like we saved $100 on the mattress by buying it in-store instead of ordering it online.  It comes squished in a box that fit comfortably in the back of my CR-V, so hauling it home yourself is NBD.  You can also return stuff to Costco forever, so if you find you don't like it after 6 or 8 months you can return the mattress for a full refund.  I'm pretty sure they will also refund your membership fee if you are dissatisfied (but double check me on that).  Obviously returning it would be a pain, but it does make the initial purchase less risky.

Sorry for the sales pitch.  I just love costco, and I love that mattress.  It did take a couple weeks for the mattress to break in and soften up (so give it some time!), but now it's awesome.  We've had it since November and are loving it.  We spent less than $800 on a king, and it was worth every penny.

  • ^ Yes, their return policies are amazing, which can be a life-saver with a mattress. The memory foam is actually our second mattress from them, having returned our previous one after having it more than a year (it became... not good, but it wasn't memory foam and it was pretty cheap).
