NBR: If you could change your career.

If you could change your career, would you?  If so, to what? Have you done it already?

I'm having a slight career identity crisis.

  • I would have stayed in HR but I would have moved into an analysis/systems role instead of recruiting.

I'm a SAHM.  I mostly love it but it's exhausting!

Pre-kid I was a store manager for a retail store.  I'd like to go back to school and become certified in pediatric OT.

  • Event planner. I love planning events, but haven't done it professionally.  Now, I'm too deep in HR and make a salary that's high enough that I don't want to start at the bottom rung somewhere.

  • @mrsjene My sister just started a job planning corporate reward events and it's pretty much the coolest ever.  She just got back from Vegas and is headed to Disney/HP World next month.

I don't think I'd change.  Librarianship is hard to break into (I still only work PT) and cost a ton of money to get the required degree, but I love it enough that I can't think of something I'd rather do.  Other than SAHM, but that one kind of requires the M part, which I don't have.

  • Lady of leisure. I'm assuming that's not an option ;)

I think I missed the boat on a career change. Things have gotten better at my job, I'm paid well with great benefits and have advanced farther than I thought I would at this point in time. I haven't found anything that has really made me feel like it would be worth the trade off, but I do look to see if something catches my eye.

  • @julie37619 That's really cool!  Is that a new career for her or has she always been in that type of career?

  • If I were single and in my twenties I would go to Forrestry school.  I don't have any desire to change careers now because I'm loving what I'm doing, but if I were forced to change careers out of necessity then I would probably look into nursing.
  • I like what I'm doing now but if I did it over again, I'd consider being a dietician.  It's always been fascinating to me but I'd also then have to be good at science.

  • @mrsjene It's new, but similar to what she's always done.  She's still young (only 6 years out of college) and she spent the first five working at a non-profit teaching consumer education and working at various events.  This is her first job title involving event planning, but it's very similar to what she was doing with the non-profit, just with a corporate budget now.

  • I like what I'm doing now but maybe I'd do something with a little less data entry.  I love doing the research portion of my job but there is no time for it because I also pay the bills for 100 different entities.

Or, I'd be a teacher.  I love being around kids. :)

     "Live like there's no midnight."

  • Teaching is already my second career - I was in advertising/media planning and buying before this. I would love to be a full-time author, but that's pretty impossible.

  • I love being a computer programmer, but I realized too late that I also love geology. I wish I had been a double major and could contribute more to the hard science areas of my project.

I sometimes toy with the idea of going back and pursuing the geology, but up until now I've just moved to another project, which wiped the slate clean and rekindled my enthusiasm.

I loved working admin at the hospital, but chances of getting on the hospital here are slim to none. I would either work in a library or be a teacher. It is far too late for that now though.
  • I love teaching and have been lucky that my job has evolved quite bit throughout my career.  I went from teaching primary grades, to being a literacy specialist, to now providing staff development.  I just started going back to school to become an administrator with hopes of being a curriculum coordinator someday.

If I had to change careers entirely I would want to do something with forensics.

If it didn't require a bunch more school, I'd consider dentistry.

My ultimate dream in my current career is to be just a step above my position now. I love local government administration and I don't see myself doing anything vastly different. If all things were possible, I'd be an admin consultant for municipalities with my own schedule; I could do work I love but see my kids a tiny bit more.
  • I am a veterinarian turned SAHM and I love both titles. I have known for a long time that I wanted kids and that I wanted to SAH with them. I actually had a difficult time in vet school because I felt like I was wasting my time, money, degree, and the slot I took in my class. I am finally at a place where I don't regret any decision I have made education / career wise.

I don't know if I will ever go back into practice or if I will ever truly work again time will tell. I have thought about different options that would be more ckndusive to raising a family such as being a sub, working at the church part time etc. Right now I am just a SAHM.

    Does that help? ;)

  • I'm almost 36 years old and I still don't know what I want to do for a living.   :-??  My degree is in political science.  I am currently a fellowship coordinator at a large hospital.  I like my job fine but I'm not passionate about it.  I wish I were.  I feel kind of stuck where I am.  I've paid in around ten years to my state retirement fund and when my kids are old enough they can attend the University I work for at 50% off.  I can also go to school for free.  Its pretty big incentive to stay.

  • I would love to own my own bakery.  It would be perfect for me.  I am always up at the butt crack of dawn and I love to bake and cook.  But at the same time I don't want to have to be responsible for everything and I only want to work part time so I don't think I would operate a very successful bakery.

  • I've bounced around a little in the software field. I would like to get back into development but that is proving challenging at my current company.

If I could change positions and keep just about everything else the same, I would want to be a librarian. I worked at a library on and off throughout high school and college and it is such a neat place to work. I loved getting first dibs on the new materials, setting up displays, and finding patrons with similar tastes.

  • Ultimately I'd love to get back working in the retirement/client service field. I loved having my own book of clients at one point and being their go to person for questions. But for now, I'm happy to be in a job where I get to think again and I'm not doing mindless tasks.

@SnShne322 I may have missed this but what ever happened with that job where you could WFH for a majority of it?

It got down to two candidates and I wasn't the one they chose.  I was so upset.

  • I would stay in music but play full time with a professional symphony. However since those jobs open up at the rate of 1-2 per year across the entire US with on average 200-300 applicants my chances are limited. You also have to have nerves of steel for the audition because if you don't play everything perfect someone else that day will.

I do like the academic side of music as well (which is what I'm in now) so I'm currently happy. But if all I had to do was symphony stuff I'd be in heaven!!

I'm loving my new gig at the library. I've been here 9 months. It's only part-time so I'm still teaching (college) part time. This is the end of my 10th year teaching and I'm getting a little burned out.
    Can I marry them all?

I have a friend who operates a bakery out of her house.  She only takes the orders she can handle in a weekend and delivers to the local area.  Or she sells at farmers markets.  She also has a full time job so she makes it work around that.
