Re: Who do you have for car isurance and what is your deductable?

  • We pay $170/month ($2,034/year) for 2 cars through MetLife.  We have a $500 comprehensive deductible and $1,000 collision.  We live in NY, I commute to CT for work.

We also have renter's insurance, which is $33/month ($400/year).

  • @als1982 and @MommyLiberty5013, thanks to both of you for responding to my question.  Very different experiences!

I have to admit, I've had Progressive for over 10 years and absolutely love them.  USAA would have be a lot cheaper for me to switch.  Sounds like they wouldn't be.

But they might be just what I am looking for on homeowner's insurance.  I need ALL the help I can get there!  I'm in a hurricane zone and we have outrageously high rates, plus most companies either won't insure here at all or won't take on new policies.  It's currently over $250/month for $320,000 of coverage (plus $1M liability, $50K property).

You may still want USAA to quote for you on car insurance. All states are different and it depends on your driving record and vehicle age, make, and model too. I love their road side!!! We typically use it once per year.

Twice we had to be towed. Three times we locked keys inside the car. One time, when I slid off the road after the huge blizzard that hit Denver in 2006/2007, other drivers were stranded for hours. USAA had someone out to get me in 20 minutes.

With homeowners' one of the other things I LOVE about USAA, is that they do cover you on debris removal if there is a property loss. So if your home burnt to the ground, the very pricey thing is paying to haul all the debris away to the dump. Last time I spoke with the USAA phone rep, she mentioned this.

Every year, we also get issued an insurance rebate - it's like a reward for being a member. It's only about $30 but still!!!

  • @MommyLiberty5013, oh I agree!  I'll get quotes for both, but just won't get my hopes up for the car insurance.

I forgot to mention  have roadside included in my car insurance also.  Though it's an extra $3-$4/month.  Roadside is one of those things that is not a question of "if", but a question of WHEN!

That is nice they were able to get a tow for you so quick!  About 4-5 months after Hurricane Katrina, I went out for brunch and when I returned one of my tires was completely flat.  I had run over a nail (there was construction debris everywhere at that time).  Tow trucks were in very short supply because most of those folks either left town and hadn't returned or their trucks were flooded.  And people were constantly getting flat tires from nails and screws in the road, lol.

I called Progressive and was told someone would be out in EIGHT hours.  Aaahhh!  Fortunately, I wasn't too far from home.  I asked them to have the tow truck driver call me when he was only about 30 minutes away.  I then took a cab home and took a cab back when I got the phone call.

I didn't know that about debris removal.  That is interesting and a very nice perk.  (Note to self: Check current policy about debris removal)

One of the things I like about Progressive is apparently at some point I was bumped up to be a "Diamond" member because of the number of years I've been a customer.  With that status, I get free Accident Forgiveness.

They also pay high retail blue book if your car is totaled.  No questions or nickel and diming about the condition, prior to the accident.

In fact, when my car was totaled last year, they gave me over $1,000 MORE than what I had paid for the car FOUR years earlier.  I mean, I'd bought it used and got a good deal, but still!

  • I am through Progressive, we pay around $500 every 6 months.  Our deductible is $500 per vehicle.  Ours has gone up a little over the past few years because of my speeding tickets.

For me, I don't think that I could ever go with USAA since when I was in the military this was an officers and E-7 and above only elite club that had a sign that had signs on the door that said officers and senior enlisted only.

On their home page, there's a "Why Join" tab. Click there and it says who is eligible to join. I read it - and officers and enlisted personnel are permitted as well as their families.

    Here's the text:

"Today, USAA membership is open to U.S. military service members, veterans with an honorable discharge, and their eligible family members. We also offer some products to individuals with no military affiliation.

    Who Can Join?

    • Active, retired and honorably discharged officers and enlisted personnel of the U.S. military
    • Cadets and midshipmen at U.S. service academies, in advanced ROTC or on ROTC scholarship, plus officer candidates within 24 months of commissioning
    • Individuals whose parents have or had USAA auto or property insurance
    • Former USAA members who had auto or property insurance
    • Widows, widowers and un-remarried former spouses of USAA membersSee note 22 who had USAA auto or property insurance while married."
  • Allied Insurance, full coverage on 2 vehicles and comp only on the 3rd. We pay $150/month with $100 comp deductible and $250 collision.

  • I understand that USAA has changed since I was in over 20 years ago, but it has left a bad taste in my mouth.  Kind of like Geico that wanted to charge me the amount of the used car I was going to buy for insurance per year when I was in Orlando for training roughly 25 years ago I don't care if they can "save" me money now, I still have a bad taste when they were an insurance company for government employees.
