Re: Monday Accountability

  • .  How MM was your weekend?  It was okay.  $130 for groceries (budgeted), $22 for gas (budgeted), $15 for some Kindle books that were on sale (not budgeted), $27 for some tops at JC Penny (not budgeted).

    2.  Any progress towards your goals? Paid an extra $250 that I earned baking cakes towards our mattress set; put an extra $100 in our porch fund and $200 in our vacation fund.  We want to have as much saved as possible for our front porch so we have less to finance.  We will hopefully sign the contract this week!

3.GTKY: would you rather do dishes or laundry, why?  Laundry, not even a question!  I hate dishes.  They gross me out.
  • 1. Pretty solid. We cooked dinner and watched a movie at home on Friday. Saturday we started a deep spring cleaning of the house then had dinner and boardgame night at a friend's house followed by drinks and NCAA basketball at a local pub. We used a groupon that we bought a few months ago at 50% off so we ended up only spending $10 for three rounds of drinks. Sunday my H went to the auto-store and did oil changes and some repairs on our cars while I wrapped up the cleaning and we ordered $15 of Chinese food for dinner. I'm eating the leftovers for lunch now :)

    2. No :(  Due to the car repairs my H did this weekend we spent about $200 that wasn't initially budgeted, but we saved by not doing any other shopping or big entertainment costs. We didn't lose any ground but also didn't gain on our goals, our allotment to savings stayed steady though so I'm happy about that. We also finally filed our taxes so I'll chalk that up as a partial win. We were expecting a nice sized refund based on our previous year returns but unfortunately I think we moved up a tax bracket due to our now joint status and job promotions last year.

    3. Laundry. My H is responsible for the dishes because I can't stand scrubbing grimy dishes. I incessantly wash my hands and clean my nails as it is, just a quirk I guess. Plus, I like doing laundry to make sure things are washed and dried using the correct cycles and folded/hung nicely for wrinkle avoidance. My H has a tendency to shrink or cause lint pils on my clothes when he tries to "help out" with the laundry, lol.

  • 1.  How MM was your weekend?

It was spendy, but somewhat planned for. Saturday: $265 at Gardener's Supply Store, I ran into some fantastic deals in their outlet store that I just couldn't say no to! I also got some season-extending Tomato-Tepees, a few pairs of gloves, one oof their garden hods, and one of their tomato kits..I could have spent more, but I held back. Sunday: $63 BJ's wholesale club, $97 groceries
    2.  Any progress towards your goals?
It was a big weekend for the GDaisies, I found out I'm pregnant on friday, and this morning we met with the bank about financing our house project (we think we have an option that will work to pay for windows and the basement, and maybe the solar pannels) They have a new refinancing option for home renovations, we can borrow up to 90% of the value of our house (obviously our plan is not to use everything available to us), our interest rate won't change (yay!). we originally borrowed through a 10/1 arm mortgage, so the first 10 years is a lower fixed rate and then it switches to a variable rate, this refinancing option keeps our current rate and resets the clock on the 10-year fixed rate (right now we're at 6.8 years left at the fixed rate).   Utimately, if we borrow what we're estimating we need, our monthly payments go up about $25. there are closing costs involved to pay for the appraisals and re-finance, but initially this sounds do-able.  We need to put some things from our contractor together for the bank.
3.GTKY: would you rather do dishes or laundry, why?
Laundry, I hate how dry my hands get after doing the dishes...I'm always too lazy to dig the dish gloves out.
    Ahhh!  Congrats!

    1.  How MM was your weekend? Pretty good- groceries ($125) and I sold some fabric online (made $120!).

    2.  Any progress towards your goals? $250 went to savings, still haven't moved $5,000 to our Roth IRA accounts- need to do that soon. Will be getting a $500 bonus from work (not much, but better than nothing) that will go to our vacation fund, and I got a 3.5% raise this year (we're a highly regulated non profit insurance company so our raises are small potatoes compared to the for profit/shareholder companies). We're also going to get estimates for a new garage door, opener, whole system... ours is on the way out.

3.GTKY: would you rather do dishes or laundry, why? Dishes because DH yells at me when I fold laundry. He worked at the Gap in college and is insanely good at folding laundry (especially baby/kids clothes).. I just don't measure up!  :)

    1.  How MM was your weekend? Pretty good overall.  We ordered pizza Saturday night and went out to lunch after church on Sunday.  We made our monthly donation to church, then DH got an oil change, gas and some supplies for his bar (which he finished this weekend!!!)

    2.  Any progress towards your goals? Currently in a modified "emergency mode" while I'm not working.

3.GTKY: would you rather do dishes or laundry, why? Probably laundry, but I don't mind doing dishes if I have to.

    Congrats @formerlyGDaisy09 !!!!

  • 1.  How MM was your weekend?
Not bad. $168 for groceries (budgeted), $10 for vendor fee (not budgeted), $72 gas in both cars total (budgeted), $7 breakfast for me (not budgeted), $32 oil supplies.

    2.  Any progress towards your goals?
MA refund finally came in so I was able to pay off my dental bill and put a nice chunk of money towards the final credit card. Less than $3700 to go.

3.GTKY: would you rather do dishes or laundry, why?
Dishes. It doesn't take as long as laundry. And I hate putting away laundry.

  • 1.  How MM was your weekend? Ugh, this weekend was painful. We had it mostly budgeted for, but still!
-$1,200 to have some large trees removed from the backyard (saved a couple hundred dollars by paying in cash as opposed to a card)
    -$85 at Lowes
-$115 for groceries (I'm always amazed at how much I spend each week on this!)
-$12 at GameStop for a few used Xbox games
-$35 Dinner Out with Hubby on Saturday because I was too lazy to cook
+$350 Got paid for a bit of freelance work I did.

    2.  Any progress towards your goals?
Well, the extra money I earned is going straight towards debt, so there's that. I was really tempted to spend it, but I'm trying to avoid temptation!

3.GTKY: would you rather do dishes or laundry, why?
I HATE Laundry! It's not so much the washing/drying, it's more the putting away that I struggle with so clothes tend to stay in the basket after I pull them out of the dryer. I don't mind doing dishes because I keep up with everything each day, but if I've been traveling all week for work I tend to find a full weeks worth of dishes all over the place when I return (DH is not very good about putting things back--the house tends to look like a tornado hit if I'm gone for more than a day or two) . Now THAT I can't stand either, lol. So I guess my answer is neither?!?

I actually miss the days when my mother-in-law lived with us--she would randomly clean the house in the middle of the night so I'd often wake up to a sparkling clean house, laundry neatly folded in the living room and a freshly cooked breakfast. :)
  • 1. Not bad. We spent $40 Friday for dinner and wine/beer for the weekend. Saturday my mom came up to help spring clean. We ended up raking 13 bags of dead grass and sweet gum tree balls and then planted new grass in the bare patches, costing us $90 for the grass seed and $14 for lunch. Sunday, I cleaned out the basement, finally tossing all the wedding gifts that we didn't like but felt guilty about getting rid of, and scrubbing and reorganizing the storage shelves down there.

    2. We're doing a freezer/pantry clean out the next 2 weeks to save some money. We put $500 toward my student loan, $1,000 in savings for spending money during our May vacation, and another $1,000 to our bathroom remodeling fund. We are so close to completing several goals - only $3,500 left on my student loan and over half saved toward our new bathroom - but I'm starting to get super antsy!!

    3. Laundry. I could never live without a dish washer.

  • 1. How MM was your weekend? Friday- Pizza night with the neighbors- $25, Saturday- $50 at Kohls for a new pillow (memory foam and totally worth the money) and Sunday- $20 gas

    2. Any progress towards your goals? Yes, I put $465 towards my car. Only $1600 to go, and it will be paid off 16 Apr.

3.GTKY: would you rather do dishes or laundry, why? Dishes definitely, H and I keep our dishwasher empty most of the time so we just rinse and put them in there. Laundry takes all day for me since I devote Sundays to it. Also, our washing maching is currently broken we are moving into week 3 without it, so I have way more laundry than usual and I'm dreading when we finally repair or replace ours and have to catch up.
  • @formerlyGDaisy09  Congrats!!! Great news!

    1. $22 Pizza, $24 Gas

    2. None

    3. Dishes- It's very calming to me for some weird reason. It's quick and easy. Laundry takes about 2 hours of dedicated time to wait while the cycles finish, switching machines and folding/putting away ugg!

  • 1.  How MM was your weekend?
Oh boy.  Friday we went to a free concert by the Alabama Symphony. They were doing a preview concert for next season.  The result?  We ended up buying season tickets!  Not budgeted, but it's something we have talked about before.  They were also running a deal where if you signed up after the concert they threw in 2 free concerts (including the NYE concert).  It's a pretty sweet deal.

Saturday we planned to go shopping to help refresh my wardrobe.  I made good progress there, but still have a few things left to buy.  I only spent about half of what we had budgeted, so that helped absorb the cost of the symphony tickets!

Yesterday we mulched.  We way underestimated how much we would need, so that was more than expected.  Groceries, thankfully, were less than expected.

All in all I'm pretty much a net $0 for budgeted/unbudgeted items for the weekend.  It still felt like we spent a lot though!

    2.  Any progress towards your goals?
Last week I decided to open a 529 for myself for my LLM tuition, and I made our first contribution.  It should save us about $500 on our state income taxes for 2015.

I also finished paying back our slush for the back room remodel.  We ended up going with a higher-end floor that cost more than budgeted.  It was worth it, but I was having anxiety with our total savings being that low.  We're all caught up now.

3.GTKY: would you rather do dishes or laundry, why?
Laundry - dirty dishes super gross me out.

This is interesting. We're guessing that H will have about $1500 in un-reimbursible college expenses this year for the online program he's doing, what's the difference in tax-breaks for paying that money into a 529 account versus entering the amount of tuition paid from the 1098-T?

    1.  How MM was your weekend? Pretty good. We bought groceries for the next two weeks and didn't spend much ($120). We went to a Comedy show on Friday night using a Groupon (50% off) and got tickets for $12 for two people.

DH played in a poker tournament and won $130, so we did go out to eat afterward. But, I had a $10 coupon and we kept the cost low.

We did spend $50 at Lowe's on a house, shovel, rake and mulch and $60 on dog food that should last us for two months.

    2.  Any progress towards your goals?
We officially have life insurance! That was one of our financial goals for this year and we can check it off. We also just hit 3 months of emergency expenses, so that is half way to our goal. We have paid off $10,000 off debt in the past 6 months, so that is nice as well. Next, we need to open a ROTH IRA for DH.

3.GTKY: would you rather do dishes or laundry, why? Tough one. I don't mind starting a load of laundry, but I hate folding and putting them away. So my version of laundry is washing, drying and throwing on our guest bed. For dishes, DH and I have a routine. He loads the dish washer and I empty it. So, I guess I would choose dishes because it takes less time.

It depends on your state.  In AL, you can deduct up to $10K contributed to a 529 if it's through the state's own program.  Some states allow more, some less, some none.  I think the tax breaks from the 1098-T are for federal taxes.

  • @formerlyGDaisy09, Congratulations!  So exciting!

Friday I made out like a bandit.  I completed 5 mystery shops (MS) in three hours for $80 in fees (plus reimbursements).  At the end of the month, MS companies start getting desperate and up the fees.

    No money spent Saturday.

$83 spent Sunday at Lowes for bits and pieces for my deck.  Which, as it turns out, we will be returning half off, lol.  My DH insisted we needed brackets for the underneath supports but then, when he actually started putting the supports in, decided bolts (or something like that) were better.

Normally, he doesn't pay that much attention to how much things cost...that's my job, lol.  But he was really outraged the brackets cost $5.44 each.  I tried to hide that I was amused by it.

Over the whole weekend, good progress made on the deck.  The framework, supports, and sub flooring is all done.  This week, DH will be cutting and fitting together the planks for the floor portion.

GTKY: I would rather do dishes because it is faster, but I don't mind either chore that much.

Let me clarify - you do need to check the rules.  We aren't eligible for any education benefits on our federal taxes anymore, so we don't have to worry about any gotchas from that standpoint.  There may be some double dipping rules you need to check.  We aren't investing these funds because I need them this year - we're just routing my expenses through the account.

  • 1 - good.  we spent $10 on pizza friday night, $77 at lowes for painting dd's bathroom, $5 donation at yoga on sunday and DH had money saved to buy a new grill at target for $300.

2 - none this week.  I did find out why we only got a $550 refund from the IRS - because we didn't qualify for the earned income credit in 2014.  I also talked to our CPA about planning for 2015 taxes.  I don't want any surprises next April when I may possibly be pregnant with #2.  I also got bummed when I found out we had to take $1100 out of our savings for a car repair on DH's car.  1 more repair like that and we decided we are selling it and get DH a newer car.  I'm sick of car repairs depleting our savings account :(

3 - I do both but doing dishes takes less time so I would rather do that.

  • 1. Eh, this weekend wasn't too bad. Mostly grocery related purchases that we didn't necessarily budget for but I'm glad we did. We had my brother over for dinner one night and made dinner for my grandparents the other so we had to buy some ingredients.

    2. Paid some more towards our loans and we definitely spent all of Saturday night with a glass of wine and our budget, crunching numbers and figuring that we can pay off one loan in August and the other in June of 2016 (but hopefully before). Started the new Dave Ramsey budget (everydollar) which I really, really like. We had a spreadsheet before, which worked, but this is so user friendly, much easier to see where our money is going.

    3. This is a hard question. If I'm just putting dishes in the dishwasher and don't have to hand wash then definitely dishes. I'm horrible at folding and putting away laundry. A lot of our clean clothes are in our laundry baskets in the basement right now because I'm being lazy about it.

  • 1. How MM was your weekend? It was okay. $150 on groceries and my niece's Easter package. $16 on Easter candy and cards for my staff. $17 on lunch Sunday afternoon.

    2. Any progress towards your goals? $200 to my student loan, $250 to our moving money account. $30 to our general savings.

3.GTKY: would you rather do dishes or laundry, why? Dishes. All day. I can't express how much I HATE doing laundry. Dishes don't really pile up around here, but I could go a couple weeks without doing laundry. So sometimes I do, and then it ends up even worse. It's a never-ending battle.

  • @formerlygdaisy09, congrats hope your pregnancy goes well.

    1.  How MM was your weekend? Not too good, spent $200 on removing trees in our yard, $30 extra on groceries than budgeted, $130 at Target and gas.

    2.  Any progress towards your goals?  Not this week, should be getting my expense money for my hotel from earlier in the month when I visited a supplier's new headquarters.

3.GTKY: would you rather do dishes or laundry, why? I would rather do laundry instead of dishes.  I do the large dishes at my house and sometimes even load and unload the dishwasher since MW doesn't like to do dishes either.
