Re: Monday Accountability Post

  • 1.  Okay.  I spent $45 at local plant sales (some for me, some for Mom).  H spent $30 on beer.  Before anyone gets too concerned, he buys expensive beer so that's not a huge quantity.

    2.  Another $100 to savings.

    3.  I'd buy a new pair of jeans or two.  I'm down to just a couple.
  • 1. FINALLY a normal weekend. $40 for dinner and drinks on Saturday. $150 on groceries on Sunday. H has been out of town for the last week, so he didn't feel like doing much of anything and I had to work on Saturday; both factors helped us in relation to the budget.

    2. $500 to our move money account, $200 to my student loan, $30 to general savings.

    3. Books. I could spend $100 in the bookstore without a problem.
  • 1. $20 on gardening supplies and $10 on drinks. It was a laid back weekend with friends.

    2. $,1,500 to the new car fund! We finally completed our baby bucket list! It took two years, one month, and ten days but it is done! \:D/

    3. Some new summer clothes. I could use some shirts.

  • 1. $103 at the grocery store

    2. we've decided to take a little break from our dog's agility classes for a while, my schedule has just gotted too busy and I need a night off during the week. so we're sticking the $125 into savings the next few months.

    3. at this point it would be on maternity clothes...though I don't think I'd consider that frivolous. if it truely had to be something frivolous that I wouldn't normally spend the money on I'd probably pick up a pair of Danskos.

    1.  How MM was your weekend? Not bad - groceries ($170), Mother's Day lunch with my parents on Saturday ($60). Had a great Mother's Day- very relaxing!

    2.  Progress towards goals? $250 went to savings this week

    3.  If you had $100 to blow on something frivolous at the mall, what would it be?  Yes, you have to blow it on something frivolous at the mall, no saving. Probably a pair of Tom's and something for the girls or DH (I like to buy them clothes!)

  • 1.  How MM was your weekend?  Great!  $98 on groceries, $14 on gas, $11 on a frozen yogurt date :)

    2.  Progress towards goals?  Increased H's 401K contribution to 4% and will hopefully get it up to 10% at the end of the year once we pay off his truck.  (It's a low number, but it's not his only source of retirement contributions).  I am hoping that by the beginning of 2016, both of us will be where we need to be for retirement, and we can just cruise along.

    3.  If you had $100 to blow on something frivolous at the mall, what would it be?  Yes, you have to blow it on something frivolous at the mall, no saving.  Clothes--probably a new blazer or a couple of new tops.

@formerlyGDaisy09 Check out ThredUp for maternity clothes! It is an online consignment store. Maternity clothes can get expensive(even shopping at GAP & ON). I wish I would have found out about this consignment store earlier. Also, Bellaband--you can wear that over your regular work pants/jeans for a while before making the move to full blown maternity pants!
  • 1.  How MM was your weekend?
Good. $75 on groceries, $7 blow money on booze.

    2.  Progress towards goals?
    None this week.

    3.  If you had $100 to blow on something frivolous at the mall, what would it be?
We got an H&M last august that I've barred myself from entering so far. I'd just hit it up for a big clothes haul. Definitely some pants for work but a couple fun dresses or shirts as well. And maybe some nice nail polish at target (weird, but our target is a mall anchor store).
  • 1.  How MM was your weekend? We were out of town this weekend and we didn't spend a dime!  The joy of spending time with generous parents!  I will have to some delayed spending (gas, groceries) but that is all budgeted.

    2.  Progress towards goals? Status quo here.  Debating what to do with DH's 3rd paycheck this month.

    3.  If you had $100 to blow on something frivolous at the mall, what would it be?  Yes, you have to blow it on something frivolous at the mall, no saving.  I would get a mani and pedi and new clothes with what was left over.

Thanks for the tip. while I don't need them quite yet, at 10weeks I know the day when my pants don't button is quickly approaching. I've been keeping tabs on Zulily and snagged a few things with a coupon from the Gap a couple weeks ago (jeans on clearance!) knowing we'd be TTC for at least a year, I was consious to pick up a lot of items with a lot of give (jersey knit, empire waist, etc.) in my regular wardrobe when I was in need of things, so I'm hoping I already have some things to help with the transition and be able to aviod having to purchase a whole bunch of maternity wear at once. We've also switched to living off our best guess at our post-baby budget, while most of that is going into savings, I am using some of that to build a wardrobe when I come across deals.

  • 1. How MM was your weekend? Absolutely awful... I'm cringing just thinking about it. This week has been designated as a no spend week between Monday-Friday to help make up for it. Other than gas in our cars we can't spend any money.
Friday- went out with friends $36
Saturday- Engagement party for H's brother- $50 gift; Target- $50 for a summer skirt, cards, 2 shirts; Chocolates for my mom - $18
Sunday- Panera- $10; Mother's Day dinner $90; $107 for a new washer upgrade since our brand new washer stopped working after a week. ERRR!! (Never purchase from hhgregg... thou the issue wasn't their fault, it was a manufacturer issue, they won't deliver our new washer we have to pick it up and didn't give us any sort of discount for our troubles)

    2. Progress towards goals? Not a pay week, so nope.
    3. If you had $100 to blow on something frivolous at the mall, what would it be? Yes, you have to blow it on something frivolous at the mall, no saving. Clothes for sure. I need new work clothes and summer clothes.
Happy Mother's Day to all mommas on the board!! I hope you had a wonderful day yesterday. :)
  • 1. How MM was your weekend?

$43 "girls day" for lunch, coffee and shopping downtown. $128 on groceries, $50 at Target for odds and ends, $30 golf (H), $95 for a belated anniversary dinner at a new place that just opened (majority of it paid by money our parents gave us for a dinner date) - worth the splurge! I'm not sure how much H spent on Mother's Day for me, he paid cash.

    2. Progress towards goals?

    Nothing until Friday.

    3. If you had $100 to blow on something frivolous at the mall, what would it be? Yes, you have to blow it on something frivolous at the mall, no saving.

We have a Target anchor store at a nearby mall. I can spend money there, no problem! I'd probably hit a local outlet mall for shoes or a new bag. I never splurge on that stuff.

    1.  How MM was your weekend?
So-so - we ran into a clearance art sale at one of our favorite local stores.  Spent $143 that was unbudgetted but walked out with 6 things to hang on our walls (which are currently bare)!  Other than that, about $125 on groceries and $25 on gas.  We also spent $150 at Home Depot for a door project.  More on that below.

    2.  Progress towards goals?
Starting rehabbing our old doors.  We spent $150 on start-up supplies... some extra rollers, some extra paint, a pair of nice sawhorses (the bulk of our spending), etc.  All of the doors in our house are cheapo/hallow flat doors.  Instead of buying new doors, we're just going to re-use our old ones and panel/repaint them and then swap out the hardware.  We spent the weekend figuring out the proportions we wanted and then we managed to panel 4 sides, paint (3 coats!), and rehang.  We think the total cost per door going forward will be $15-$20, depending on whether we have to panel one or two sides.  It's a lot of work, but we love how they are turning out.  Besides, our doors are wonky sizes, and they're still functional.  Just need some TLC.  No sense in replacing them with something we would have to cut down anyway.

    3.  If you had $100 to blow on something frivolous at the mall, what would it be?  Yes, you have to blow it on something frivolous at the mall, no saving.
Probably a facial or a mani-pedi.  Or maybe a couple new work skirts.

Side note - here are some before and after shots of our doors.  What you can't really see in the before photos is how dingy/banged up the doors were.  They were actually a completely different color from the frames (which we had painted previously).

We also paneled our window seat to match.  It is in between two closets, and those doors will be getting some TLC soon.

Thanks!  I'm glad we're able to re-use what we have.  One of those doors is 79" tall instead of 80" (standard).  Another is 29" wide instead of 30" wide.  So we would have had to buy custom or else chop down new ones, and then we would have had to do
something with the old ones.... this is kind of tedious, but I think it's probably easier in the long run.  Besides, we learned a lot and I think the next couple doors will go more quickly.

We did almost kill each other last night trying to re-hang them though.  Turns out that's the hardest step.  And it's also the very. last. thing.  We were both tired, cranky, and he's like, "hold it still!" and I'm like, "screw the damn thing in already!"  Lesson learned... save that part for the next day!

  • What type of wood did you use for the trim?  It looks pretty thin.  All of our closet doors are hollow wood doors that need some TLC.  I might like to try this on some of them but they are sliding doors so I can't go very thick on the trim.

These look awesome. We are also "blessed" with flat, hollow, doors, except ours are varnished pine. I'd love to change them out, I love white trim so much more than the pine we have. unfortunately that's low on our list of projects. we are, however, putting white in the new finished space in the basement!

We actually just used sheets of mdf - it's 1/8" thick and it is $10 for a 4x8 sheet at Home Depot.  Super cheap.  It sands and paints up great.

We have a table saw, so we just had HD rip the mdf down to fit in our car.  We ripped the 4 1/2" strips ourselves.

Our bathroom door went back on without having to adjust anything.  Our bedroom door required some adjustment of the hinges and latch plate to make it close - but we just re-installed the hinges out by a small bit and that took care of it.  We just made sure the old holes were completely covered by the metal plate of the new hinge to make sure we were drilling into new wood.  Even though we bumped the hinges out a bit, they don't look any different. It was a relatively easy fix.

Once all the doors have been fixed, we'll spend an afternoon patching any adjustments made to the door frames.  That's pretty easy to do, it's just kind of messy.

We considered a design that did not hit the edge of the door stop, but ultimately we only have 5 doors that have to be paneled on two sides.  The rest of the doors are closets (all of which open out), so we'll only panel the exterior of those. If we had 10 or 12 doors that had to be paneled on two sides, we probably would have chosen a different design.

    1.  How MM was your weekend?
It was ok. We had to purchase some things, so we spent about $230:
    • $30 at Lowes for a fire extinguisher and buckets
    • $30 at Target for DH's mother's day gift
    • $2.82 for a half price vente Smore's frappucino (we shared it)!
    • $15 at Steak and Shake for dinner
    • $100 on groceries (needed to stock up the pantry) and furnace filters
    • $50 rubber boots and gold panning supplies for DH's "new hobby"
    2.  Progress towards goals?
Yes, made two extra payments this month. One toward my student loans (an extra $75) and one toward our interest free line of credit for furniture (an extra $75), which means it will be paid off a month earlier.

    3.  If you had $100 to blow on something frivolous at the mall, what would it be?
Ok, maybe it's not entirely frivolous, but I would buy a cute dress that could be used for work and social outings. I see so many cute dresses in the $80-$100 range, but I refuse to spend more than $30-$40 on a dress, so I am relegated to clearance racks and thrift stores. So it would be a "frivolous" expenditure for me.

    1.  How MM was your weekend?  Not good, I am not allow to buy any more flowers or other things for outside the house.  I spent including my Mom's gift card, $180 at a plant store.  Over spent on groceries by $30.  Hosted a Baptism party for DD, $140.  I almost forgot, I got an expansion for one of my deck building games.  Will need to get the "starter" box that has the initial set-up to make the expansion work better.

    2.  Progress towards goals?  Trying to make a payment to my credit card, the site was down earlier today.

  • 1.  How MM was your weekend?
It was an unusual weekend because we were in NYC on Fri., flew back Saturday.  Friday was $7 for b/f, $40 for lunch and drinks, $34 for dinner.

Saturday was around $50 for lunch...it was an outdoor food mart and I didn't keep good track (bad MM!).  Necklace and chain for $35 at cute vintage mall.  $60 for shuttle service back to JFK (including tip) and $40 for cab ride home.

For the shuttles/taxis going back and forth to airports at the beginning and end of our trip...the total was literally the cost of one of our airline tickets.  Not exaggerating at all.  I wish I was, lol.  I tried to talk my DH into taking the subway back to JFK...that would have been $5.50 total as opposed to $60...but, for once, he was the one too dainty for that.

Sunday...spent a nice big, fat zero.  I vegged on the couch all day and caught up on some of my DVR'ed shows that I'd missed all week.

    2.  Progress towards goals?
Finally got a nice vacation in after almost two years without one!

    3.  If you had $100 to blow on something frivolous at the mall, what would it be?  Yes, you have to blow it on something frivolous at the mall, no saving.
Cute new summer dress and a set of acrylic nails.  I've been meaning to get my nails put back on anyway!

As for all the talk about maternity clothes, I have a bit of a funny story on that.  I was shopping the clearance racks at Target a few years ago.  I found this SUPER cute knee length denim skirt that I just loved because it was an A-line and flared out a bit instead of the more typical straight lines.  And only $8.

I bought it and wore it many times...occasionally wondering why it had these weird, short (only about 2" long) elasticized sides on the waist line.  Then, one day I was looking at the washing instructions on the tag, and for the first time noticed the word "maternity" on the front part of the tag.  Aaahhh that's what those elasticized pieces are about!  Though, oddly for a maternity skirt, the front of the skirt was flat and normal.  Hence why I never suspected!  And, no, that discovery sure did not stop me from wearing it.
  • A little late to the party but just got back from vacation! We had a great cruise!

    1. We actually came back with extra money from vacation so that is a good thing. We will pay for food for family and the moving truck when we move in about 2 weeks.

    2. $550 to house fund before vacation

    3. I'd buy clothing..most likely shirts
