To update kitchen, or not to update kitchen?

Re: To update kitchen, or not to update kitchen?

  • I'm not sure I have a preference between open and closed kitchens, but I despise galley style. My neighborhood was built up in the 1950s and that was my one non-negiotable: no galley kitchen.

In a previous house I lived in, I had a galley kitchen to end all galley kitchens.  It was SUPER tiny and narrow.  Probably only 8'-10' long on top of that.  Normal height ceiling.

But what was even funnier was the contrast it was to the rest of the house.  The house had been built in 1850 and had 14' ceilings and enormous open rooms.  We lived in what would have originally been the front entertaining area (ie ballroom/drawing room).

At some point, the house had been divided up into separate residencies.  And that galley kitchen was an obvious thrown together, slapped to the side of the house add-on, in order to give our unit a kitchen.
