If you don't have a membership, might be worth getting one, lol.

Thought I would send you the link since my DH would love that TV and researched it to death, but it's not in our budget range.

Thanks for the note about the curve. We eat at an island and watch tv, so it would be a bummer if we couldn't see it.
Oh we are Costco fanatics.  I'll pretend I didn't see this!!  We need to pay off our landscaping/driveway before we buy a new TV... especially since the one we have is a 50" 1080p LCD haha!
  • I bought my current TV when I was in college and terrible with money. It was the best TV that Best Buy had at the time, a 52" 1080p Pioneer Elite. I'm now very sad to say that I spent $3500, and that was after receiving a $500 discount for it being the floor model! But it's been going strong for almost 9 years now, survived 6 moves, and it gets pretty constant use. For the most part, if we're home, it's on, whether it's FI playing video games, my kids watching a movie, or just having it on to stream music through it. We're going to wait until it dies to get a new one, and depending on when it actually does go out, I don't think we'll spend more than $1000-1200 for the new one.

My H bought a 55" TV about 14 years ago and paid $3,000 for it.  I was AGHAST!!!  I thought he was crazy pants for spending that much on a tv.  But, back then, if you wanted a big tv...and he did...that was at least how much they cost.  But, it did last for 8-9 years.  We weren't married at the time and kept our finances separate.  Can you tell, lol?

I also vote for talking your H into waiting until Black Friday/Cyber Monday.  The one thing that are always awesome good deals for those events are tvs.  As much as I hate to suggest it...and on the MM board of all places...could he maybe "get by" for a couple months renting a tv from one of those awful places like Aaron's?  However, I'm guessing it would be about $20/week...so the extra cost may not be worth the potential savings.

I'm a little bit in the same boat...but with my laptop.  The screen totally died on me last week.  My H has a laptop he doesn't use very much but it is TINY and I hate using it on a regular basis.  But, although we are keeping an eye out for deals, I'm ready to put up with it until Black Friday/Cyber Monday when I know there will be good deals abounding.

  • I'm starting to think this is our new car debate all over again lol.

For the record, I've had a Dynex, 32 inch tv which I got for about $250 seven years ago, and aside from a slight buzzing at the top when it displays a bright white full screen, it's been great.
  • yeah I've had my TV since 2008 with no issues and DH has had his even longer.  His is now in our living room and its great too.

  • H bought our current tv when he was single. It's a 42" plasma that is really nice! I'm bummed they don't make plasma anymore. Hoping this will last a while. I think it was around $1,200 at the time.

Now, I honestly can't keep the different TV types straight and even though we watch a ton and both love sports, I'd go cheap if it was up to me. H however, both cares and notices the difference. He's a tech guy, it is what it is. When this TV ultimately goes I'd probably be willing to budget $1,500 max. We don't do super huge, so that would get a really good unit I suppose. He's supportive of budgeting for my hobbies, so I reciprocate when I can. We just have one tv.
  • We have a 50" Panasonic LED smart TV that we bought a year ago for $750. This is the third Panasonic TV that I've owned and never had a complaint.
  • @bmo88 I think I got the link fixed in my original post.

  • Love it!  I think it's great that he put the research and effort into trying to reach the budget you guys agreed on.

Just because we're all MM, doesn't mean we can't splurge on something when it's what we want and can afford to do so :)

  • Yay!  We ended up biting the bullet and buying a new TV on Amazon too on Friday.  Our current living room one keeps getting a giant pink stripe through it that will only go away if you turn it off for a few minutes.

We saw a local furniture store had a TV that we liked (65" Samsung, 1080p, not 4k), for $899.  I called them up and asked if we could pay over the phone and pick it up later that day.  They said yes, and the sales person said he'd have a person in accounts call us back to pay over the phone.  While waiting for a call back, I decided to look on Amazon and found the same model for $897.  Since it's Amazon, we wouldn't have to pay sales tax.  So we decided to go ahead and get it there to save us a trip down to the store, and to save on the sales tax.  And, just for fun, I added in our wedding registry completion code just to see what would happen... AND IT WORKED.  So we saved an additional 10%.  So the TV ended up costing a little over $800, which is a crazy good price for any 65" TV of a good brand.
  • julieanne912: Nice deal! And really nice score on the registry completion code. I always try a few coupon codes before purchasing, just to be sure. I would have loved to get a 1080p TV, but DH wasn't into it.

Yeah originally H was all about having a 4K TV, and we even had the house wired to accomodate one.  But he did more research and realized he'd have to buy a new dvd/blu ray, and stuff like netflix and even a lot of the directv stuff doesn't broadcast in 4k just yet.  We plan on finishing our basement in a few years so we can do the big 4k down there :)

    ---------------UPDATE----------------

Figured I would update now that we finally made the purchase. It was a little stressful because DH and I definitely have very different thoughts on TV specs and what is "ideal." I tried to be understanding because he is a tech guy and really doesn't spend money on anything, so the TV was important to him.

We set a budget of no more than $1,200, including taxes and a warranty. I would have preferred much lower, but it was what we could afford and had the cash on hand to pay for.

DH searched for hours, compared tons of models and finally settled on the Samsung 55inch curved 4k JU7500 model. Regularly, it costs $2,000. That would have been a definitive "Hell No" from me.

Well, he watched it for about two weeks and then caught it on sale on Amazon for $1,297 ($700 off) and $97 for a 4 year protection plan. Still over budget I told him.

Luck was on his side though. My Chase card (that got stolen, but I convinced them to let me put a purchase on it), was having a promo for 10% cash back on all Amazon.com purchases and I had a $15 Amazon gift card (earned through Swag bucks). So that would bring the real total to $1,239.60. Luckily, Amazon doesn't charge taxes. But, still over budget....

I tried to hold my ground and say no, but I admired that he at least put in the work and got it really damn close. So, to make up for the $40 difference, I told him to sell some of his less used PS3 games to a local store, which he did and got $55!

So, all that to say, we technically came under budget at $1,184.6!

At the end of the day, no this was not our most MM moment and I still would have preferred to spend less, but my DH is elated and we compromised on the TV. I am sure some will judge and say we spent too much. Perhaps, but we could afford it, DH is really happy and I am at least happy we worked through it go down to a budget we agreed on together.

Signing off: A Nestie with a new TV that is more high tech than any cell phone I will ever own and a very happy husband :)

Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving!!!!
As far as I can remember from your other posts, you don't have consumer debt, and have a good savings account.  If that is how to choose to spend your money, who can judge?  Thats the great thing about this board not everyone would do it (I wouldn't buy a TV that expensive because I don't care....but we splurge on other things) but there isn't a lot of judgement.  Maybe not a good choice if you have credit card debt or no savings, but as my husband says (and I try to subscribe too but get too stressed about the budget) "I work hard, I want to enjoy my life"

    ------SECOND UPDATE------
Ugh, we ordered the TV last Thursday and it was supposed to arrive today. The crappy delivery company tried to deliver it 9am, which was 6 hours before the set window, so no one was home. The problem is DH arranged to get off work early to be here at 3. So we called and tried to get it coordinated but they couldn't do it. 4 phone calls, multiple emails and 3 hours later, we are expecting it to be delivered on Sunday. We will see if they can figure it out. The only silver lining is that Amazon is giving us a $100 refund on the purchase for the inconvenience. We didn't even ask for money back, we just want our product. As annoying as it is, at least that brought our TV cost a bit.

    -----------------ANOTHER UPDATE-----------------
Wow, this local shipping company really sucks. We rescheduled to have it delivered today between 1-3pm. Well, that time has passed so I called again and they forgot to put it on a truck!! DH is soooo mad and I am irritated. So we called Amazon back, but there hands are tied because they aren't shipping it. They put in a complaint with the company and gave us another $100 refund (we didn't even ask for it). So while it is nice to get $200 back, we just want our dang TV. It's a pain because now we have to find time to take off this week to have it delivered.

Is this Pilot, through Amazon?  Because we are having an issue with them too.  Ordered our TV on black Friday, and set a delivery time of last Thursday between 3 and 6.  Nobody showed so the next day we called Pilot and they had no record of our TV, even when looking up by tracking #, address, name, etc.  So then we called Amazon and they just said to keep waiting, and gave us a $75 credit.  Ugh.   Thankfully, H is working from home but with our luck, the TV will finally arrive when he's traveling and I'll have to take time off to go wait for it.

It's through a local shipper called XPO. I don't know if it's because so many orders are being placed right now, but it's ridiculous! We finally got our tv today, but almost didn't. They said they would deliver between 5-7. DH got home around 4:35pm and saw them driving away! So he chased them down and got our tv. I cannot believe how terrible they are as a company...

  • I'm glad you finally got it (and that they discounted it for your troubles) but man, what a pain in the butt! I hope your dh loves it and it was completely worth the troubles.

Yeah we finally got ours straightened out (I think).  H called Amazon and insisted on talking to a manager.  Basically, Amazon "lost" the TV.  They tried to get him to upgrade to the next one up (which I'm guessing was a 4k curved or something), and would credit us $300.  But the next one up that was available was $1500, so it would still be $500 more, even with the credit.  But thankfully, they ended up finding one of the one we ordered.  Supposedly, we're going to get it on Saturday.  We'll see.

Amazon has been good with the customer service part, but I don't think I'd order a TV from them again.  The only reason we're sticking with this is because of the discounts making it significantly less than going to Costco.
