GTKY: Holidays, vacation, PTO and sick days.
Re: GTKY: Holidays, vacation, PTO and sick days.
They also had an office in the mandatory evac area for the California fires. Those people were told the same thing.
Then one year hurricane Isabel came through. Our area shutdown first. The client site closed. The normal "our offices are open" email came out. Eventually Isabel hit DC and the office closed. All the sudden the admin charge codes came out. Assholes.....
I get the traditional holidays off (New's Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor day, Thanksgiving day & Christmas Day). Now if any of the holidays happens to fall on a Saturday or Sunday, we don't get the Friday before or Monday after off. We get an extra vacation day to use whenever we want. How much vacation time we get a year depends on how long you've been with the company. But I think they start you off with two weeks. I've been here 18 years so I'm up to 25 vacation days a year. We don't get sick days, it's up to you to save vacation days in case of illness. They did away with sick days because they were running into the problem with so many employees having 200+ hours of sick time saved up. So they changed things over and instead of getting 5 sick days a year, they added 5 vacation days a year. So if you don't get sick, you can still use those days up for doing something fun.
Haha, yep, that was why I wanted to make a point to mention where I live. I realize people from further north would be like, "Freezing? So? Who is this hothouse flower?" But our roads become very dangerous with ice or snow, plus most of us aren't experienced driving in those conditions.
I did go to work for part of the day all three days, but took the bus. There were accidents galore and I wasn't going to risk driving my car. On the first day, I was debating driving and my H...who grew up in Oregon where it typically snows a few days a year...was giving me instructions on how to drive in icy conditions.
@jtmh2012, lol, yeah my company had the same attitude, "Please do whatever you feel is safest for yourself and your family...blah, blah, blah...but it's a normal work day, so you need to take vacation time if you are not here or AWOP if you don't have enough vacation time."
It is extra frustrating at your work that the offices outside of the main one are treated second class, in those instances. Or at least let people work from home. Hard to get to work when it is surrounded by water or a fire!
I probably would have been more understanding about it at my workplace, if I didn't already know that they "set aside" a dollar amount in their yearly budget for giving employees time off during weather emergencies. And, of course, most years it isn't used because it isn't needed.
I think the overtime rules in this country need re-doing. I don't mind putting in extra hours, but you should pay me for them. Or at least don't ding me when extreme weather shuts down the area.

I totally agree! I've been salaried in most of the positions I've had, but was still paid either OT or straight time (depending on the job) if I worked more than 40 hours in a week. HOWEVER, I think a large part of that is because I've tended to work in industries where my hours get billed back to a client. I'm even fine with straight time, but just something because otherwise employees can get in situations where their employer takes advantage of it.
One of my first jobs out of college was being a "low on the totem pole" manager for one of those Foot Action retail stores. The salary was a bit on the low side, but acceptable, for a 40 hour work week. I specifically asked in my interview if my schedule would typically be 40 hours...because no straight time or OT...and was told it would be. I go in on my first day and look at my schedule for the week. Scheduled for 58 hours.
Looking back, I wish I had just walked out right there. But I was young and nervous and scared of not finding another job quickly, so I torturously stayed for about six weeks until I found another job. I did the math for what I was paid versus the hours I worked. I would have been better off with a minimum wage job that had OT. It was just that pathetic.
I currently get 4 hours vacation and 5 hours sick leave each pay period. I think that equals out to 13 days vacation and 16.25 days of sick leave. We also get 3 floating holidays along with all the major federal holidays and the day after Thanksgiving. This is my first year here and I'm not sure what happens at certain anniversary years.
With my previous employer I earned 11.23 hours of vacation time each pay period, which equaled out to about 36 days a year. However, that included any holidays off, sick leave, and vacation time. I often miss this policy because we had the option to work on MLK or presidents day. The office would be closed so we couldn't see clients but we could do paperwork. That also meant that I could save my vacation hours for when I wanted them.
4 weeks vacation
5 PTO days
20 days sick time
Small List of holidays: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving (and day after), Christmas Eve, Christmas
Maternity leave is 6 or 8 weeks (for c-section) and you can bank up to 8 weeks of vacation. For both girls, I used 6 weeks of vacation so I got a full 12 weeks paid. Not enough time in my opinion- I was a walking zombie until they were about 6 months (esp with DD#1).
