GTKY: Holidays, vacation, PTO and sick days.

Re: GTKY: Holidays, vacation, PTO and sick days.

  • Thanks for the reminder!  My worksite also allows for up to one week per year for weather issues...more for hurricanes with a city wide evacuation...but they are the Stingiest McStingersons about it.
My old company was just as bad.  I worked for a company whose corporate office was outside of DC, but we were at a client site.  The area was notorious for flooding.  So bad that the only thing above water would maybe be the site itself, you'd need a boat to get there.  Even the local office would be surrounded by water.  In the rare event of snow, the entire area shuts down.  The company wasted no time in sending out emails saying "our offices are still open, it is a work day....blah blah blah.....but do the best thing concerned for your family".  There are days I wish someone would sue them over that.

They also had an office in the mandatory evac area for the California fires.  Those people were told the same thing.

Then one year hurricane Isabel came through.  Our area shutdown first.  The client site closed.  The normal "our offices are open" email came out.  Eventually Isabel hit DC and the office closed.  All the sudden the admin charge codes came out.  Assholes.....

  • I get the traditional holidays off (New's Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor day, Thanksgiving day & Christmas Day). Now if any of the holidays happens to fall on a Saturday or Sunday, we don't get the Friday before or Monday after off. We get an extra vacation day to use whenever we want. How much vacation time we get a year depends on how long you've been with the company. But I think they start you off with two weeks. I've been here 18 years so I'm up to 25 vacation days a year. We don't get sick days, it's up to you to save vacation days in case of illness. They did away with sick days because they were running into the problem with so many employees having 200+ hours of sick time saved up. So they changed things over and instead of getting 5 sick days a year, they added 5 vacation days a year. So if you don't get sick, you can still use those days up for doing something fun.

  • I'm still getting used to my new job (last one had limited holidays, and sick and vacation time were separate). I believe we have 15 paid holidays. I also get 20 days of PTO (combined sick/vacation). We can carry over quite a bit and can cash out up to I have short and long term disability coverage and FMLA (after I've been here a year). We occasionally have snow days and my employer pays us for them. I don't have our bereavement leave memorized.

Thanks for the reminder!  My worksite also allows for up to one week per year for weather issues...more for hurricanes with a city wide evacuation...but they are the Stingiest McStingersons about it.

Two years ago, it was a crazy cold winter and the temperature stayed below freezing for three days straight.  The freeway was closed.  All bridges into the city were closed.  The buses stopped running after 3PM each day.  The city and weather stations announced for people stay inside and not leave their homes.  But did we get even one hour of time off for any of that?  NOPE!  Apparently they'd rather have their employees driving into work on roads coated with ice.  I know most of you know I'm from NOLA.  Needless to say, not a cold weather city.  Neither our roads or our vehicles/tires are designed for ice or snow.

Sorry!  Had to rant there for a second.  I really like this company, but they lost a lot of respect from me during the Ice Time.

Reading this I was like where is this person from?!?!? Then I scrolled up and saw it was posted by you and realized that makes sense for NOLA.  being from MA I was so confused about closing a highway for being below freezing.  But we have the resources to handle it up here. I wish we could get cold days (not that you actually did)

We get 8 paid holidays.  Each year, they alternate between giving us MLK day and President's Day as a holiday, so this year was President's Day, which I prefer since MLK falls so quickly after Christmas/New Years.

We also close at noon on Christmas Eve, and we get two floating holidays to use as we wish, and they are "use it or lose it" for the year, and they have to be used by Dec 1.

I'm newer here so I haven't accumulated all of it yet, but I can accumulate up to 10 paid days off, and I also accumulate sick time, but I don't remember what the max is.

We also get 3 paid bereavement days for a close family member (parent, grandparent, sibling, spouse, child).  I also pay into short term disability so I can get 6 weeks at 60% pay if I have a baby.  My contribution is only like $12/month.

ETA: they also will do weather related closures at management's discretion.  So far I haven't experienced an entire snow day, but we closed up at 2pm a few weeks ago, and opened at 9:30am the next day because of some heavy snowfalls.  They will make up any hours up to 8 hours on those days we close up (some people opted to stay to get work done).

Haha, yep, that was why I wanted to make a point to mention where I live.  I realize people from further north would be like, "Freezing?  So?  Who is this hothouse flower?"  But our roads become very dangerous with ice or snow, plus most of us aren't experienced driving in those conditions.

I did go to work for part of the day all three days, but took the bus.  There were accidents galore and I wasn't going to risk driving my car.  On the first day, I was debating driving and my H...who grew up in Oregon where it typically snows a few days a year...was giving me instructions on how to drive in icy conditions.

@jtmh2012, lol, yeah my company had the same attitude, "Please do whatever you feel is safest for yourself and your family...blah, blah, blah...but it's a normal work day, so you need to take vacation time if you are not here or AWOP if you don't have enough vacation time."

It is extra frustrating at your work that the offices outside of the main one are treated second class, in those instances.  Or at least let people work from home.  Hard to get to work when it is surrounded by water or a fire!

I probably would have been more understanding about it at my workplace, if I didn't already know that they "set aside" a dollar amount in their yearly budget for giving employees time off during weather emergencies.  And, of course, most years it isn't used because it isn't needed.

  • I get pretty decent vacation and sick time at my job. I'm on year 3 at my current company, so I get 3 weeks of vacation as of January 1st. I don't have to accrue it throughout the year, it's a lump sum as of the 1st of the year. We can also roll over up to 5 days. I get a bank of 7 separate sick days that are use or lose it. On top of that, I get all the days off that the stock market is closed (financial institution, even though I work in the health brokerage side business), so that means I get most banking holidays off, with the exception of Columbus Day and Veteran's day. I also get Good Friday off (not sure why that counts as a stock market holiday but it does!), and we get to leave at 1 pm two different days of the year - the day before July 4th and the day after Thanksgiving (since the market closes at 1 pm those days).

I also have employer-paid short term disability on top of NYS DBL and 12 weeks of maternity leave.

Since PPs mentioned weather-related closings - I actually got a snow day yesterday from work. We got 20 inches of snow in a matter of 6 hours where I live so the roads were absolutely terrible. My boss and I agreed that I would work from home and apparently the majority of my company did not make it in either. It wasn't an official snow day but HR sent out an email this morning saying that we don't have to use vacation or sick time if we didn't work at the office yesterday, and that if you did come in you'll get an extra day of vacation. I thought that was pretty awesome. I've had one other snow day while at this job and I had to use vacation time for it.

Well, it also irritated me because we're all salary and overtime exempt and many people worked way more than the 40 hour standard work week, but don't get paid extra.  Yet the one time for a weather related event you can't let people have the day?

I think the overtime rules in this country need re-doing.  I don't mind putting in extra hours, but you should pay me for them.  Or at least don't ding me when extreme weather shuts down the area.

I totally agree!  I've been salaried in most of the positions I've had, but was still paid either OT or straight time (depending on the job) if I worked more than 40 hours in a week.  HOWEVER, I think a large part of that is because I've tended to work in industries where my hours get billed back to a client.  I'm even fine with straight time, but just something because otherwise employees can get in situations where their employer takes advantage of it.

One of my first jobs out of college was being a "low on the totem pole" manager for one of those Foot Action retail stores.  The salary was a bit on the low side, but acceptable, for a 40 hour work week.  I specifically asked in my interview if my schedule would typically be 40 hours...because no straight time or OT...and was told it would be.  I go in on my first day and look at my schedule for the week.  Scheduled for 58 hours.

Looking back, I wish I had just walked out right there.  But I was young and nervous and scared of not finding another job quickly, so I torturously stayed for about six weeks until I found another job.  I did the math for what I was paid versus the hours I worked.  I would have been better off with a minimum wage job that had OT.  It was just that pathetic.

  • Self employed- if I don't work, I don't make money.  I love it.

DH gets major holidays (no minor ones like President's Day though) plus 21 vacation days.  He'll go up to 28 days this summer when he hits his 10 year mark with the company.  I think he gets 5 personal days.
  • I currently get 4 hours vacation and 5 hours sick leave each pay period. I think that equals out to 13 days vacation and 16.25 days of sick leave. We also get 3 floating holidays along with all the major federal holidays and the day after Thanksgiving. This is my first year here and I'm not sure what happens at certain anniversary years.

With my previous employer I earned 11.23 hours of vacation time each pay period, which equaled out to about 36 days a year. However, that included any holidays off, sick leave, and vacation time. I often miss this policy because we had the option to work on MLK or presidents day. The office would be closed so we couldn't see clients but we could do paperwork. That also meant that I could save my vacation hours for when I wanted them.

Exactly!  A lot of our teams have people working 50-60+ hour weeks.  If they'd just hire more people, they wouldn't need to do that.  In some cases, the hours get billed back to the government.  So the company just makes more and more profit while not paying anything more.  We're not all management, but apparently IT professionals fall into the exemption category. :(

I'm late to the game, but ours depends on years of service (changes once you hit 10 years, 20 years, etc). This year I got:

    4 weeks vacation
    5 PTO days
    20 days sick time
Small List of holidays: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving (and day after), Christmas Eve, Christmas

Maternity leave is 6 or 8 weeks (for c-section) and you can bank up to 8 weeks of vacation. For both girls, I used 6 weeks of vacation so I got a full 12 weeks paid. Not enough time in my opinion- I was a walking zombie until they were about 6 months (esp with DD#1).

I'm right there with you. 12 weeks of leave is not enough time for bonding, it's terrible for breastfeeding. it took me until 10 weeks to start to feel like I could function like an adult again, make my own meals, do laundry, keep the house clean...now I'm back at work and I feel so lost again.

It definitely takes time- DD#1 was pretty fussy and breastfeeding/pumping was a struggle with her too. The first 6-9 months with her were tough.. lots of crying from both of us! It does get easier though. DD#2 came when DD#1 was about 20 months old.. we were in such baby mode, it didn't really phase us.. plus she was super easy going and I had all of the breast feeding/pumping issues figured out by the time DD#2 got here. Transition from 1 to 2 was actually really smooth- now they're little ladies and can do a lot for themselves.. makes the few hours we have together on weekday nights really nice.  :)

I'm not from Canada so I don't know all the details, but I've heard PAID one year maternity leave is pretty standard there.

That's very common in many countries.  However, their tax rates are much higher than ours.  The maternity leave isn't paid by the employer, it's paid by the government.

Thanks for verifying.  That always seemed so long to me, especially considering it is paid.  I also wasn't sure if it was a benefit usually given by companies or if it was mandated by the government.  Apparently mandated and paid for by the government.  Wow, no wonder their taxes are so much higher.
