Kasa, you should go to Aruba.

We looked into it, but honestly, I think I'd be bored.  I require a lot of activities on vacation and I'm really not one to be able to simply relax on a beach all day every day.  It didn't look to me like there was a whole lot to do on Aruba besides the beach.

Weird.  We could have easily spent two weeks there.  It was such a blast.

What is there to do?  Maybe I missed something in my research.

  • imageMrsJuliD:

So, the other week we went to Andy's parents house.  We went into the backyard, since they didn't answer the front door.  I saw 3 ducks waddling around.

"Um, honey?  Does your mom have ducks now?"

Andy just sighed and shook his head.

Then we went to her greenhouse, opened it up, and saw 10 chickens and 5 turkeys.  Mind you she lives in the city and this is completely illegal.

She had a reason for it all of course. "Well, we found the ducks at school and they didn't have their mom and we hatched the chickens at school and the turkey were being sold for only $1 which is a great deal so I HAD to buy some.  Can you raise turkeys at your place?  I need to find them a home somewhere."

She seriously needs to go back to living on a farm.  But at least right now we have a freshly butchered greenhouse chicken in our fridge to feast on this weekend.

Thinking about "freshly butchered" meat skeeves me out.  I don't know why I'm not a vegetarian sometimes.

Your MIL sounds kind of hilarious.  Smile

  • Confession: literally, as I was typing that "freshly butchered" meat skeeves me out, I had another IE tab open for the Co-op because just before coming back here, I had remembered that I wanted to add ground chicken to my order for this month.  The ground chicken will be freshly butchered.

I just realized the irony in my comment to JuliD.  Hehe.  I'm a total hypcorite.

  • So after doing some digging this morning, I came to the conclusion that my H qualifies for the 1st time home buyers credit.  I qualify for the repeat home buyers credit.  But since we are married, we don't qualify for anything.

    How effed up is that?

  • Laura, Yikes at your CW shooting out the window of your building!

Juli, LOL at your MIL and her farm animals in the city.

Kasa, have you given any thought to a cruise?  October is late enough in hurricane season that you probably wouldn't see any kind of storm action.  There are lots of shows and activities, but relaxing is an option too.

Yeah, perhaps my wording wasn't very animal friendly - sorry about the skeeving.

I've heard Andy describe living on a farm though and how he felt about eating the animals he raised and he didn't mind it.  There was almost a certain amount of respect for the animals, I don't know how to describe it like he did.  Like, the animals lived their lives to help their family have food on the table and then live their lives.  If that makes sense.

    That's lame.

I refuse to go anywhere in the hurricane/rain zone because I'm stubborn.  The rain ruined our Jamaica honeymoon, and it totally sucked.  I don't want to take that risk again.  Ya, I know you can have bad weather anywhere, but I don't want to go somewhere on vacation where there is an increased likelihood of rain.

Yep, I totally understand.  That's why I buy my meat from small, local farmers who raise their animals in a humane manner (before they're murdered for my dinner).  Stick out tongue

    Parasailing

Snorkeling - off shore and sailboat/catamaran tours

    Seadooing - LOVED this

Private sunset sail with dinner (that was so fun...and romantic)

    Horseback riding

    Golf

    ATV tours

    Shopping downtown

    Mountain bike tours

    Salsa dance classes

    Casinos

    Ostrich farm and Butterfly farm

    Deep sea fishing

    Museums (Historical, archeological, and coin)

Island tours (the non-tourist side is like a completely different country)

Rent a jeep and create your own tour

    Party bus

Tons and tons of excellent restaurants

Eh, I don't know.  We loved it though - we weren't ever bored.

    Psssh, is that all?

We're supposed to go "somewhere in the Carribean" for my friend's 30th in early December - she's doing the planning though and last I heard she was leaning towards some place in Mexico.  I might just have to suggest Aruba - was it all inclusive and how is pricing compared to other Carriben locations?

  • K, Molly, you win.  I'll check out Aruba again.  Wink

It's cheaper than Grand Cayman.  Stick out tongue

Don't do an AI in Aruba unless you are just going to get drunk and party everyday.  And actually if you just want to get drunk and party everyday go to Mexico.  (Disclaimer:  There is nothing wrong with getting drunk and partying.  Cool

Aruba has so many ridiculous fantastic restaurants, it would be such a waste not to try them out (and AI food usually sucks.)

  • here are some random randoms

    • Summer shandy is too sweet now that I've expanded my beer palate. at least give me Oberon or a heff.
    • Going to the BOB tonight after my FIRST CSA PICKUP OF THE SEASON for the taping of American Brew Trail. Seriously tonight is going to rock.
    • Working on my new website http://eatlocalwestmichigan.com is SERIOUSLY time consuming. But will be cool once it's done.

    Ha!  Yay Party!!!

For real though, I wasn't trying to win.  We just had probably our best vacation ever together there...I just want to share that awesomeness with other people.  Stick out tongue

I was so excited for the first pick-up on Tuesday and am LOVING the goods.  It's forcing me to make stuff I never would have made - for example, tonight I'm making a Coconut Chicken Curry with Bok Choy.  BOK CHOY.  I didn't even know what that looked like 3 days ago.

I just have a bad taste in my mouth about the Caribbean because the only time I've ever been there was for our honeymoon in Jamaica, and it was really a bust.  It rained most of the time, and we were at an AI and I was freaking bored out of my mind.  And we had the WORST time finding available food there.  Meltdowns ensued.  I seriously couldn't wait to go home.

Obviously, all Caribbean islands are different (and I'd really like to check out St. Lucia sometime), but my knee-jerk reaction is to stay far, far away from the Caribbean.

Very good to know.  Thanks!  I think the point of this trip will be laying by the pool and drinking some booze.

It's too bad!  :-(  The Caribbean is like heaven on earth.  I think you need to give it another shot just to redeem the Jamaica trip.  :-)

The Caribbean is a very big place.  St Lucia is pretty far south in the Caribbean (I think Aruba is, too) and doesn't often get hit with hurricanes.  We were in St Vincent, which is closer to South America than Florida in '08 when Igor or Ivan was wreaking havoc and we got one short rainshower in a week.

St. Lucia really was nothing short of amazing too.

We also looked at this island off the coast of South America when we were researching for the honeymoon, I can't for the life of me remember the name but it seemed awesome.  If I think of it I'll post it and it's going to drive me nuts until I remember.

  • I don't know if I've mentioned this, but my FIL was born in St Vincent in the Caribbean, so lots of my extended family is also Caribbean.  One of my H's cousins is married to a guy from St Lucia.

St Vincent is part of the Grenadines (Bequia, Canouan, Mustique, and others).  Yachting is a big thing there--you travel between the islands.  Young Island seems really cool--it's a privately owned island off the coast of St Vincent.  I have a photo album on FB from our trip to SVG.

Okay, this is another one of those DON'T GO OUTSIDE kind of days, because you will not want to come back in and go back to work. It is lovely out there.

Kasa, I agree that St. Lucia would redeem the Carribbean for you. It's not threatened by hurricanes and there is soooo much to do!

Rhett Butler and I enjoyed a wonderful lunch outside today.  Smile

Regarding St. Lucia weather: "There is however a rainy season that generally falls between June and November. During this season, vacationers should be prepared for heavy, but sporadic showers that come on quickly... St. Lucia is located in the hurricane belt and it is possible for severe tropical storms to arise. The hurricane season is generally during the same time as the rainy season, June through November."

St. Lucia is a no-go for this fall.  Hopefully some other time thoguh.

That's how yesterday was, too.  I came into work late (at 9a.m.) because of an appointment, and it was not easy.  I can only imagine how much harder it would be now.

As much as I hate AZ right now, I think it is the best place for you to go this fall.  It could rain a bit, especially up near the Canyon, but it is the desert after all.

All is well now - the turkeys have been transferred to an Aunt, the chickens have been, errr, taken care of, and the ducks are gone too.  Now, I'm just hoping there isn't a great deal on goats becuase she surely couldn't resist that.

I'm not kidding that I would not be surprised if I opened their front door one day and saw a goat running around the house.
