Yep, me too.  I'm a procrastinator.  Every year I say that NEXT year I'm going to start my shopping early, but I always end up waiting until the last minute.  I hate shopping.  I make a weird girl.

  • I love shopping, but I hate that I have to try and think of gifts that people need and appreciate, that aren't too expensive because we're broke, that we can ship easily because we live nowhere near our families.

Also, this Christmas we are spending with my ILs which makes me just want to shrivel up and die.  It also means that we won't get to put up our own Christmas tree or anything here this year.  I HATE THAT.

Last year was the best Christmas I've had since my dad died, because it was the first one where it was just Dave and I and we didn't spend it with family (because he had a huge hockey tournament that he had to fly out to on Boxing Day and obviously we couldn't travel to either of our families and have him still make it to the tournament)

  • What is Boxing Day?

This Christmas is my parents' year.  We swap holidays, so this year we have Thanksgiving with Adam's parents and then Christmas with mine, and next year will swap.  I'm just glad that my parents live in town so we don't have to do any traveling over the holidays.  We'll put up our own tree (which I'm sure the cats are going to LOVE) and we'll put lights on the house, but that's about the extent of our Christmas decorations.  I don't get very festive.  Christmas usually stresses me out more than anything and Christmas music makes me want to puncture my own ear drums with a dull pencil.

awww last christmas was our 1st in our house. It was so much fun to decorate and get a tree. I really love Christmas.  It can get expensive as you are trying to buy things to decorate the house and the tree so look for the sales!

Yes it can. Thats why we went shopping the day after Christmas last year and bought our tree, all the decorations, wrapping paper, ribbon, etc all on sale! I think we spent $300 and got everything except lights for the house!

  • I guess I should clarify that I don't hate Christmas...I do like it!  I love the idea behind it, and I love the festive feeling that I get.

I just don't like the Christmases that we spend with the ILs...because I am Catholic, and his family isn't.  He goes to church with me every Sunday (and last Sunday we were invited to our priest's cabin for supper, we spent the whole afternoon and evening there) and I think that it is REALLY important to go to Church on Christmas Eve.  It is my absolute favourite service of the year.

The last time we spent Christmas with his fam (two years ago) I got TOTAL side eye from his parents for insisting that I go to Christmas Eve mass.  Note that I was not insisting that THEY go (that would not be pleasant for anyone involved) but only that I go.  And obviously Dave was coming with me, because he loves me and supports me and knows that it is important to me.  So we were at a party at my M and FIL's friend's place, that they go to every Christmas Eve, and Dave and I had to leave early to go to midnight mass.  They were seriously peeved that we would be so rude as to leave the party!  I was later told by my FIL that I "ruined Christmas"

You've got to be freaking kidding me.  I WILL be going to Christmas mass again this year, and if they don't like it...well, they can stop insisting that we spend every second Christmas with them!!!

  • Yeah J, way to ruin Christmas by going to church!!!  I mean, why in the world would anyone go to church on Christmas?  That's like the one day you shouldn't go.  I would have told your FIL to shove a Christmas tree up his @ss.

  • hahahaha I know, right?  He's crazycakes...my family is not a big fan of his.

In regards to Christmas decorating:  this is what you guys all need to do when you have kids!  From the very first year that we were born, my parents bought each of us a Christmas ornament of our own for the tree.  They would give it to us on the day that we decorate the tree, and the ornament always has something to do with a big event that happened in our lives that year.

I have ornaments that include: a sewing machine, a Christmas bear wearing a jersey and holding a soccer ball, a glass ornament of the residence I lived in my first year of uni, and a "home sweet home" ornament from last year when we bought our house.

When we moved out on our own, we were given the box of ornaments that we had been collecting since birth - so we have a whole box to decorate our tree with!  I LOVE putting the ornaments on the tree and remembering all those important events right from childhood.

We did that too!!!  Except it didn't have anything to do with big events.... we just picked one out each year.  I'll get my box this year.  I think I have a lot of unicorns because I'm lame.

  • We bought our first gifts over the weekend. I guess my IL's decided that we were going to pull names for who fills each other's stockings (they used to do a stocking for each of us 4 kids). So I have my FIL (no idea at all what I will be buying!) and DH has our BIL- we bought him a couple things Sunday.

Last year was our first Xmas in our house and it was our first with a real tree. We are going to be on our honeymoon in December so DH says we shouldn't get a tree- but I am so going to get a little one when we get back!

Every year I get DH a penguin ornament because they are his favorite animal. Our whole tree is penguins...well maybe 80% penguins. But now it's a tradition and I can't stop!! I also need to buy the "first christmas together" ornament for our first married Xmas!!

  • I started looking at the Martha Stewart website for Christmas ideas this week....eeeek!

Last Christmas was our first in the house as well and I was so excited for us to have and decorate our first big tree together.  I LOVE decorating for Christmas and the tree goes up the second Thanksgiving is done in our household.

We only have like 2 1/2 months until Christmas, though!!!  OMG! How does it sneak up SO FAST every year?!?!?

  • I realized the other day that I need to start thinking of what to get people.  We will be home for Thanksgiving, so it would make sense to buy everything then so I don't have to pack gifts in my suitcase when we go home for Christmas.

I'm really hoping no one gets us a "first Christmas" ornament.  As my mom says, I just don't understand and appreciate a lot of those things that most people consider tradition.  I used to get paid to create huge over the top Christmas trees.  I love trees like that, so that's what ours is and therefore there's no room for those types of ornaments.  Yep, I'm a tree snob.

  • Boxing Day is like Black Friday for Canada but it's Dec 26.

We celebrate Hanukkah. My family's always made it into kinda a big deal. DH's family on the other hand only really lights the candles (we give gifts, possibly have a party, etc). It's super early this year so we'll be on our own. Hopefully I can try to do it up a little b/c the last few yrs we didn't even light candles on our own (it also felt weird for me since we were in FL and there was no snow). Haven't decided what to do about gifts. Neither of us have any money right now, so if anything I'll buy DH some winter clothes or something else he really needs.

  • I am going shopping for christmas crafts this weekend! I normally start my christmas cards in October because I hand make them all!

Do we want to do something for christmas on here like exchange cards or ornaments or something?

I love LOVE love the Holidays! The girls birthday always kicks it off for me. October 30th wooohooo!!!

  • i'm usually not big on christmas, but I feel kinda excited this year :) Except I'm hella poor and probably won't get anyone much of anything.

If we keep it cheap, I'm all for it. :)

I am looking forward to the holidays... sorta. I love them, but the money thing stresses me out this year. I guess I have the same number of people to buy for this year as I did last year... it just seems like more, and Matt's family does NOT understand the whole "the thought is what counts" concept. They all go a bit overboard with the gifts, and Matt feels pressure to follow suit. We both need new tires and annual inspections on our cars, and I know mine needs about $400 worth of work to pass. Crying

  • Yeah, I hate e-cards though, hahahaha

But no way I'm putting my address on the 'net for creepy stalkers to come and kill me in my sleep.

I would PM my address to those of you that I feel I "know" though.

I like this idea too!  I like the card idea, we would just have to figure out how to exchange address.  Maybe one person to collect address, we could PM that person. And then send out an email?
