not all republicans love her...me being one of them

    This exactly.

I am a little flabbergasted that people are genuinely shocked about the outcome of last night.  This is democracy working at its fullest...this isn't something that happened as a direct result of anything President Obama may or may not have done, its just the way politics work.  If there's a conservative President then at the mid-terms they most often re-set and the House and Senate go Liberal...now there's a Liberal President and the House (haven't heard final numbers as to the Senate) went back to the Republicans.  This isn't anything new, and in two years the tides will shift again.

Bachman also won because she represents a district (that does include Stillwater and Forest Lake) where there are a LOT of people who own a lot of land and don't want those taxes going up, and don't want government telling them how they can use that land (ie. green acres, wetlands, protected lands, etc.).

I think this is a lesson in teaching the communities that they need to live with in their means.  LGA was NEVER intended to pay salaries and finance a city it was meant to provide basic services (ie. fire, police) to local governments that can't otherwise generate that money themselves and the two biggest abusers of that LGA money are St. Paul and Minneapolis.  I don't care if cutting aid means raising property taxes and raising taxes on other things...maybe if the cities learned to live with in their means this wouldn't be an issue.  I don't see Mayor Coleman, and Mayor Rybak or Rep, Bachmann, or Governor Pawlenty taking pay cuts to get it done...there are too many chiefs and not enough engines at work here and we'll never fix the problem because of it.

I totally agree with your first paragraph.  I think the results are a bit more stark across the country due to theshitty economy, but I'm not really surprised at all that the Republicans are getting the House back.  Nor am I really that surprised that we'll likely end up with a Democratic governor and a Republican state legislature.  Cyclical nature of politics.

I actually think that a somewhat successful challenge to Bachmann shows that she will lose, in a year when Republicans get voted out of office.  This just wasn't that year.  If she'd had a really viable challenger two years ago, I think she might have lost.  But when the tide swings the other way again, if she's still out there with her nonsense, I think she's gone.

Also, Raz, I TOTALLY agree about gum-chewing guy.  DH and I were shouting at the tv.  He looked like a cow.

Also agree fully. Losing the House wasn't a shock (keeping it would have been though) and the Senate was pretty likely to stick with the Dems, but it wasn't a guarantee. There is a lot of anti-government and anti-incumbent grumbling in this country. In large part due to the economy - which people don't seem to have patience to understand and wait out and seem to think the U.S. government magically controls the global markets.  Add into that the healthcare bill which people don't  [want to] understand or acknowledge as a basic right. Top it all off with a strong Conservative message and easy target in the Dems -  who didn't seem to have a cohesive message -  and you have a tidal wave of red. It's not surprising, but it is sad.

It isn't easy to swallow and certainly makes me a bit uncomfortable, but I can't say that I was surprised. True, a part of me desperately hoped the polls and pundits were wrong and Dems wouldn't get quite so slaughtered - and I really hoped that WI would keep Feingold. Of all the losses last night, that one hurt the most for this WI raised girl.

I think all the euphoric highs of the promises and potential of Obama have somewhat deflated and soured (due to the economy, the wars and the fact that no one can build a utopian society in two years) so you have a lot of voters who, two years ago, were caught up in the emotional strength and idealism of Obama and now aren't getting their hopes and dreams met so they swing in opposite direction of emotions - to anger and resentment. And you have a Republicans and Tea Party that is capitalizing on the anger and dodging the blame for having a hand in creating it.

In short - the voting was not rational and reasonable - it was emotional. It was based on impatience and frustration just as two years ago it was based on hopes and promises. When the impatience and frustration continues for two years, the voting public will swing back - hopefully in time to elect Obama to a second term.

And as for the gum-smacking guy - UGH. What is it with people (celebs especially) who think it is acceptable to smack their gum during interviews and public appearances? You wouldn't walk down the red-carpet still chewing on your dinner, would you? So why the h3ll do you think it is appropriate to do the same chewing gum? It is disgusting! (and yes, I do have a slliiiiiight issue with gum smacking in general which is coloring my anger).

  • Her speech also included the little tidbit that because she won this is still a country of the people/for the people.  As if Tarryl won government would have no longer been about the poeple.

I think Bachmann may have some good ideas in her head.  I don't think they come out right and therefore it colors what she said.  She gets flustered and things shoot out of her mouth.

My big concern is that politicians are getting so polarized that there is no way to agree to anything.

I'm one that would call her crazy.  There are many democrats and republicans that I disagree with and I don't call them crazy.  However, if you're saying crazy things....then you're crazy regardless of what party you're in.

Now what I find truly disrespectful is when something has been proven to be false but the opponents keep repeating it to fan the flame. ie Obama is a Muslim.  Obama is a terrorist.  Obama was born in Kenya.  Those statements have no merits.

Bachmann's win does not surprise me.  She's represents a conservative district.    The fact that the Republicans took back the House doesn't suprise me as well, it's just cyclical nature of politics plus the current economic times.

Unfortunately, the people who provide those services have to be paid. You want your street plowed? A public works employee is going to have to be paid to do that. You want your house fire put out? Yeah, a fire fighter's salary is going to have to be paid. You want to make sure your next door neighbor doesn't open a drive-through restaurant at his house? A zoning specialist makes that happen... and he or she gets a salary.

Actually, if you want to look at LGA distributed per capita, St. Paul and Minneapolis don't even come close to being the biggest consumers. That honor falls to iron range towns. I suppose it depends on how you define "abusers."

    The numbers are available here.

this is probably my favorite quote:
"Asked for comment about Bachmann?s criticism of the trip, the White House said in a written statement that the figures cited by the Republican lawmaker ?have no basis in reality.?"

Newsflash to the White House, Michele Bachmann has never set foot in this place called "reality"

I just want someone to explain to me why they voted for her.  I mean genuinely.  I am not trying to be a jerk, I just can't wrap my head around it. In all honesty, I just want to try to understand!

She represents a TRUE conservative base and there are a lot of conservatives out there that feel that the party candidates that come out of primaries are not conservative enough (ie. Pawlenty, McCain, etc).  The feel that the candidates in office today have moved too far to the middle that they don't truly represent the conservative base.

I know people call her crazy and I really find that to be disrespectful regardless of whether you like them or not.  I mean I am not out calling President Obama crazy because I don't believe in what he stands for and I think he leans too far left.  She isn't a great speaker, yes that's obvious, but she just represents conservatives and thats why conservatives like her.

    Yes

    It's not disrespectful, it's honest.

If President Obama was running from media outlet to media outlet spouting off conspiracy theories, I'd call him crazy too.
